S/O brushing teeth

I was at the dentist today and asked the tech for a recommendation for a good pediatric dentist. She told me a place, but mentioned that they don't recommend going until age 3. I could have sworn my old dentist said age 2. Maybe I'm remembering wrong...

When do you plan to take your LO for their first dental visit?

    3. I couldn't imagine now.

  • I haven't asked my dentist but the pediatric dentist I looked up in our area said to bring them in at a year old. I will wait till they're at least two.
  • Probably not until closer to 3.  He barely lets me look at his teeth and I am positive he wouldn't let a stranger get anywhere close so I'm not going to fight that battle.

This. Initially I thought 2 but no way would she let a stranger look in her mouth now!

  • Our pedi said when they have all of their teeth. I assumed that was sometime between 2-3.
  • We took Cooper at sign of first tooth. She hasn't been back but H's sis is a children's dental hygienist lady thing down in Austin so whenever she comes in she checks Coopers teeth out

  • Thanks everyone! The dentist recommended to me does "happy visits" where all they do is talk cheerfully to her and let her explore the office. Then on the second visit, they show a toothbrush and "tickle" their fingers with it. Then the third visit they "tickle" two teeth. And so on and so forth. That's really the major reason I might start early. It seems like they take their time to build trust, and she already has most of her teeth. We can do more than one "happy visit" too, so I'm less worried about her being traumatized, although I admit that's my main concern since she's already so afraid of doctors.

I'm going to talk to the hygienist about it more next time I go in.

  • Our pedi dentist recommends as soon as they start getting teeth, and by age 1 for sure. Avery has already gone once. He only does a basic check when they are little (no cleaning). It is more to get them used to going to the dentist and to catch any potential problems early on.

FWIW - our dental insurance also sent a reminder to take Avery when she turned 1.
