BM talked to the school secretary. She just said that is how it's always been; girls can't throw football, boys can't throw softball. BM then called the Superintendent, who just called her back. I'm waiting to hear further news. I told BM it's still bullshit. Just because that's how it's always been, doesn't mean it's right. We don't live in the 50's, people.

I just caught up and I've got all the rage. I'm chasing this yellow flag to the end because I need to know that someone there has a brain and puts it to good use and fixes this royal fuck up.
Superintendent agreed he thinks it's not right and will address it in the board meeting tomorrow. I told BM to still find out who the athletic director is and contact them to find out who is in charge of the even and to address the change in the future. Even if she can't throw today, we could make impact for future years.

DH just came home and said he is going to have SD line up for the event and address the fact she wants to throw to the person handling that specific event. Like, "hey-- all my kid wants to do is throw a goddamned football. Just let her do it."

I'm really proud of you for raising a stink over this, missy. As you said, even if it doesn't help with today's event, it sounds like it is a real possibility that your call to the superintendent may correct this for little girls going forward. Good for you!

Really, the event is today and he is trying to avoid it by waiting until tomorrow?? Why is this such a big issue? Weren't there after school specials about girls joining boy sports in the 90s??? Do we need to air those again?
I like the idea of just having her line up. Good luck!!

Well, really it's her mom doing the mouth work. All three of us will work together to ensure something changes. And @fredalina, this is a brand new superintendent, so he probably wasn't aware this was a continuous issue. It seems everyone in this area is okay with the mentality that because girls have the option to throw a softball, it's all good.

I will speak further with DH this morning. The track and field day was delayed an hour today due to weather, so we could have time to further direct the issue today. And like I said before, he will at least ensure she can throw today. He has the whole day off, so I will push for him to direct it in other ways, too. BM runs a daycare, so she has limited time on directing things at the moment. I will keep you all updated.

I'm so glad you're fighting for her and showing her that this kind of thing does matter and that she matters.
It honestly makes me feel a little weepy.
I do agree with @fredalina. In my ideal world the superintendent would get off the phone and send an email to all the organizers saying that boys should be able to throw the softball and girls throw the football today and that it needs to be made clear so that students can participate if they want.
I really want your SD to just happen to be tossing a football with a friend while the event is going on and hit the ass who told her that in the nose ala Varsity Blues.
Yeah, I mean I want things to be more urgently addressed today; however, it's more up to BM and DH on how they directly handle it. I can encourage and follow their lead, but I don't want to over step my position and take the lead.

And this makes sense and I think you're showing a ton of restraint (hell, I want to go storming down there and I don't know your SD so I'm sure it's so hard). I hope that it all goes well and she gets to participate!
DH went out to the event as they are awaiting the weather and addressed the issue with three separate coaches. 1) they aren't even having the even now, because they want to keep the even small with the rain we received this morning 2) apparently both girls have been interested in throwing the football and boys have been interested in throwing softball 3) DH addressed the fact there should be change since it appears there is such an interest from both parties 4) he expressed he would have had SD line up anyways. He will speak further with the Superintendent today, but right now, he took DD to watch SD play, so I can study today. Thank you all for your support. I hope things do change for future years, but I also hope it's not some major news story. Then all you creepers will know where I live.

I should stand by Iowa, because really, a lot of progressive and awesome things happen in this state overall. It's just that I live in a very rural area, with a very good 'ol boy mentality. It's not a terrible place-- it just needs a little change. We already have issues being about the only atheist family in this town, so why not piss more people off, eh?

I know this is very late, but I would also suggest you contact the Women's Sports Foundation.
OCR complaints may be necessary in some situations, but are an absolute cluster of governmental bureaucracy and typically a last resort after other attempts for parity have been exhausted and unsuccessful.
The WSF might put a staff member or intern onto helping you guys if you don't get immediate and satisfactory/equitable resolution from the school regarding this policy. Good luck!
