Effing Triage Nurses.... *UPDATE*

edited May 2014 in August 2014 Moms
So all day my uterus as been on fire.  We're talking sharp, stabbing, pains.... and they're moving into my back.  Awesome.

I have a sitter lined up to head to L&D in a couple hours to get checked out.  I LOATH going.  Everyone who has a kid at this hospital always says the same thing about it.  L&D is great, the doctors are amazing, the L&D Triage nurses are all ass holes.

They're super bitchy, brush off everything, have a tendency to not listen, one time I went in with my daughter and one of the nurses made fun of me saying it wasn't my first baby and I should "know better" etc.... I don't want to go, but it's military healthcare so I have to go to this hospital, and I know it's not normal to have sharp stabbing pains all through your belly and back when you're 24weeks, so I'm gonna go.

In the past I've found it much more tolerable to go in there if I go in saying I think I have 'X" please check for it.  When I say "I don't know what's wrong, here are my symptoms" they brush you off.  "Here's have some tylenol, drink some water, lie on your left side, you're just stressed because your husband is deployed, etc..."

So, at the risk of getting flamed.  Play Dr. Google / Web MD with me.  I want to be able to go in and say, "Here are my symptoms, I think it could be 1,2 or 3.  Can you check for that"

So here are my symptoms:

Fire Ute.... not even kidding, sharp stabbing labor like pains.  About 3x per hour I feel and actual contraction that radiates into my back and down my legs.

My whole belly seizes up and hurts every time I pee

I'm on day 3 of a headache (Tylenol is usless)

Sudden onset of Nausea

Shortness of breath

My thought is bladder infection?  My fear is Pre-E.... I'm open to suggestions over the next couple hours before I go in.  I would go in sooner honestly, but I have to wait until I have a sitter....

*******************UPDATE************************

Well, tonight got all sorts of interesting!  I went to let the dog out before the sitter got here and my finger got tangled in his training collar.  The 90lb German Shepherd and I were at odds as to the best way to escape each other.  After I sat down to recover from the extreme pain and physical strain I noticed my pants were wet.  I went into L&D when the sitter got here, and I had ruptured a membrane.  I had a couple of contractions, but the baby had enough fluid and I wasn't losing more so things seem ok for now on that front.  Although I'm on scheduled bed rest (required resting periods everyday so I don't over do it) for a couple weeks until I have a follow up.  And strict orders to go back if I lose more fluid, notice decreased fetal movement, or have any more contractions.

As for the other stuff... I don't have a bladder infection.  I do have a kidney stone! I will probably pass it some time in the next few days, and I have to pee in a strainer until I pass it.

This week is gonna suck, next week won't be overly fun either.

But for now, I'm ok, baby is ok, and I'm just about to be seriously uncomfortable for a while

Re: Effing Triage Nurses.... *UPDATE*

  • I'm not sure, but bladder infection seems reasonable.  I have all of the symptoms you describe (besides fire ute and my headache is going on 4 weeks now).  But I was checked for pre-e and nada.  And my culture came back negative for bladder infection.  Please update because maybe it will help me out too!

  • No suggestions from symptoms, but I'm glad you're getting it checked out. Maybe tell the triage nurses happy nurses week when you go in, see if that softens them up a bit. Good luck! Let us know how it goes!

My sister had pains exactly like what you are describing throughout 3rd tri and went to L&D probably a dozen times.  She was sent home every single time after being told there was nothing physically "wrong" and she was not in labor.  No idea what it was, but I just know it sucked for her and it continued to get worse until she went into labor at 37 weeks.  I'm sorry you're experiencing this.

  • I am sorry. It could be a bladder infection as mentioned, but I can not say for sure. Let us know how it goes.

With my first I went in at 32 weeks with contractions. I was actually dehydrated and that was irritating my uterus. I was put on fluids then sent home when things settled down. I am making sure to drink a lot of water now.

  • I am totally guessing here, but I would also go with the bladder infection. Maybe it has gone to your kidneys. I had a friend who had a kidney infection but had no symptoms besides a backache. The next thing we knew she was in the hospital.

  • No suggestions, just wanted to commiserate over triage nurses at military hospitals. Seriously, why are they the worst????!!!! When I called at 14 weeks to get a renewal on my Zofran prescription because I was throwing up 10+ times a day, the nurse simply said "well, it should be getting better," and tried to end the call. I lost my mind! Why are they in the healthcare industry if they care that little??? Ugh. Seriously though, I hope you're ok and it turns out to be nothing. I'll be thinking about you!
I honestly think a lot of it is because they get these really young dumb girls that got knocked up by a sailor and have quickie weddings for the health care.  I think they just genuinely are so used to dependa-crazy that they don't really take anyone seriously

OMG, I had really similar symptoms yesterday morning and ended up in L&D! Mine was a very strong, constant ache through my lower belly radiating into my back and a headache. I called and they told me to come right in. I was paranoid that I was going into labor, so paranoid that I was crying uncontrollably the whole way there. They hooked me up, monitored baby and my (lack of) contractions, tested my urine, and did a pelvic to make sure my cervix was closed. Everything looked fine. They ended up sending me home after about 5 hours with no real explanation. I felt horrible for the rest of the day, but I feel mostly better today.

  • I will add to my update, I have a shit ton of questions about the way the nurses explained this to me and am not finding Jack online.  I'm too tired to keep looking, but I'll probably be looking for some BTDT kind of stories.

I always thought your water either broke or it didn't.  I've never heard of just losing a little and then being potentially ok....? I'm confused, and tired.

    OK.... rambling.  Goodnight

I had a high leak with DD that resealed before I made it into L&D. They sent me back home only for me to return the next day to give birth. But after the first leak my doula and the midwife both reassured me that drinking water would enable my body to replenish the fluid.

ETA - I hope you don't have any more trouble or excitement with your pregnancy and that the kidney stone isn't too painful. Or at least passes quickly.
  • So sorry you are going through this! I hope you are feeling all better today!

There are two layers to your amniotic sac.  Some people have a leak or break in the outer layer which reseals which is no big deal.  Also high up leaks commonly reseal as well (I had one 1 week before having my D).  Sorry you're going through this.... hope things all stay put for quite a while longer!

This!  This makes so much sense and fits perfectly with what the nurse was using too many words late at night to try and say!  Thank you!

She was going on and on about how my womb was like it's own little eco-system for baby and that the system had been damaged, but they weren't too worried as long as it didn't set off a domino affect.  Talking about the outter and inner wall of my bag of waters.  I was too tired to take it in....

  • Oh no! I'm glad there's still enough fluid that you and baby are ok and staying put. Relax and cherish that you don't have to do anything for awhile.

  • I've never had a kidney stone, but I know others have said they are so painful! I couldn't imagine having that and being pregnant. Scary about the fluid, I too was under the impression that once it broke that was it, I'm so glad to hear otherwise. Thinking of you!
