Single kids in double carts

There are only 3 or 4 double carts at the commissary (grocery store on base) where we shop. Today there were none available so one of my twins had to ride in the basket. Every double cart I saw in the store - 3 of them - had a single kid in it.

I know the double carts are cool b/c they look like race cars, but using one when you only have one kid is rude. I was so pissed. I wish I had said something b/c maybe they don't realize it's not cool, but I couldn't think of what to say without being a total bitch.

I know Parenting has strong feels about returning carts, so what say you on this issue?

  • Um, I always let my (at the time) only child use them. They're for everyone, everyone.
Like pp said, first come, first serve.
I don't think one having to be in the basket is all that terrible. When dd was a nb she was in the basket in her seat. I just put the groceries around her.

  • I get that it's frustrating that there weren't any available, but no. You don't get to dictate that.

  • The cart is clearly designed for 2 kids. That's the purpose. I don't think I'm being entitled at all. My 18-month-old should have to ride in the basket(which is unsafe, btw) and be crowded by all the groceries so that your (general you) preshus can sit in a double cart?

There were 2 of 2 expectant mother spots open. Should I have parked in one b/c it's first come first served and how am I supposed to know if a pregnant woman is coming after me? Um, no. They're intended for expectant mothers so that's who should use them. Same with the carts.

  • I can understand why you were annoyed, but I don't think it ever crossed my mind that I should leave those carts for parents of two, especially when my devil of a 3 year old is screaming at the top of his lungs about wanting to sit in the car cart.

There's no sign saying twins only. Don't touch. Must be for two kids. Single kids get the hell away. No fun for you. Come on
This is what came to my mind too.

  • I used a double cart once (it's ok because I had two kids with me) and it SUCKED. The thing is so big and hard to steer. I put my 2 year old in the seat and my 4 year old gets to sit in the cart. It's a good thing to do on a budget because I can only buy what fits.  :P
  • Oh I know it's really stupid to be pissed about, but I can't really help it. I think it's rude. That's my UO, I guess. I'm pretty sure I've seen the multiples board bitching about people who do this so maybe I should have complained over there. Hey, at least I stirred something up. That's kind if fun for me as someone who is more of a lurker.

  • I wouldn't call us stirred up right now.

  • I have two kids, but I wear the little one. Can I use the car carts without being rude? Or would I need to have one more child of cart-riding age for it to be okay?

Or two more, since those carts do technically have three spots? Damn it. I need to borrow kids so that DS can enjoy the car carts.

Seriously though, why don't you bring a baby carrier?

  • I guess I wouldn't get pissed about it because I hate those damn carts but with that being said, I won't rag on you for being bothered. I'm sure something on the same level has pissed me off, although I can't think of how to compare it at the moment.

::saves pitch fork for a different day::

::notes to self and will side eye every single kid in a double cart from now on::

I'm trying to picture the darn pictures on the seat on proper riding rules.  I thought standing on the back and riding under were big no-no's.  As long as they are sitting I don't see an issue and no one has ever mentioned it when my kid has been there.
Yeah, I think if you are watching your kid and making sure they stay seated there is no problem. But some kids are fast, and unpredictable when they are little - H worked for several years as a checker at a grocery store before we were married. He saw some twins tumble out of the cart part once and it was bad - bloody noses, mouths. The dad just picked them up and ran out of the store.

  • Ok one more thing... The carts I'm talking about do only have 2 seats. The car is not down at the front of the cart. It looks like the costco cart but there is a little steering wheel in front of the seat. That's it. Yes, if you don't need it I think you should leave it for those who do.

That was my mom once. She had me in the seat, as an infant, my sister, who is less than 2 years older than me, in the cart basket, and my mom was holding my oldest sister's hand, who is only 3 years older than me, and my sister in the basket took a dive.

I'm gonna only take 1 kid with me next time, and push them in the car cart while wearing my yoga pants out in public and feeding said kid a pouch.

Do I win the RudeLazySloppy Mom award then?

I know what you are talking about - our store uses those. They must have a dozen and they are always taken. If/when I find one (because DD begs every time), I use it. It is a treat for her and it makes my trip easier. I understand being annoyed, but to expect that they be reserved is too much.

  • Maybe I should request that they get boring double carts. There used to be more than enough and then they got rid of most of them. That's adding to the frustration. There have been other times lately where there were no doubles available but the ones I saw all had 2 little kids in them. Didn't bother me at all. Also, my kids do not tolerate being worn. That was my only option before they could sit unassisted and it was freaking awful.

I hate when people say wear your baby. Not everyone wants to do that. Granted I don't care if you do but I carried them for 9 months and was thrilled that I no longer had to. Add on to the fact that I had terrible back labor with both sunny side up babies and sciatica that took some time to resolve plus my double D breasts on my chest. Each boob is bigger than a newborn's head.

I DON'T WANNA WEAR NO BABY.  I'm carrying enough frickin weight around.

ok, I feel better now I got that off my chest (pun). And no, I was not angry about it. I was expressing myself.

    I get that!

But if you're complaining that you (not you, @mbenit4‌, the general you) can't use a single kid cart then I will suggest it. That or bringing a stroller, but since I hate trying to haul crap like a stroller and a cart through the store, I personally would pick babywearing every time.

  • I need to roam around my local grocery store and glare at singletons in car carts. I'd probably get kicked out for making people uncomfortable and then I would starve.

  • Also, the doubles are not at the front of the store with all the other carts. When they're there, they are tucked behind the pillars outside the store between the entrance and exit. You really have to go out of your way to get one.

So y'all never double cart? Way easier than cart and stroller, IMO.

Like using two carts? I wouldn't unless I was buying a ton of shit.

  • Only finished page 1, but yes you sound entitled. So my 1 kid shouldn't get to ride in the fun car because we don't have 2 kids? Eff that noise you should come up with a better plan. What if they were all taken by double kids?

Also I had no clue they were for multiples and my kid rides in one everytime she can. I keep my sanity because she isn't touching shit and she has fun.
