Canadian Moms re: Mat Leave. :)

So...

When do you plan to start your time off?

Are you going to share the time with the Dad or are you hogging all 52 weeks to yourself?

Does your company top up your salary?

Do you plan to return to work after your leave?

Anything else you would like to share with the class?   ;)

Re: Canadian Moms re: Mat Leave. :)

  • I'm a SAHM now, but with DS I started mat leave a month before my due date and loved every single second of it.  My company topped up my salary for an extra 6 weeks, and I didn't go back to work when I finished my leave.

I know it's not for everyone, and not possible for everyone, but I love being a SAHM!  We'll see how I feel about it when there's two of them...!!

  • When do you plan to start your time off?

I am quitting my job at the end of June and have holidays to get paid out for till the end of July.  If I am remembering correctly I can start mat leave 8 weeks before my due date (correct me if I am wrong -- I forget how this works!)   So...  I guess I can start collecting benefits at the beginning of October?

Are you going to share the time with the Dad or are you hogging all 52 weeks to yourself?

Last time my husband asked if he could take some of the time. I just laughed and laughed and laughed.  (I am mean.  ;)   I took the whole year and enjoyed every minute.  I actually left work 6 weeks before birth.  Totally don't regret that.  It was an amazing month and a half.  My midwife said she strongly encourages everyone to take at least 2 weeks before your due date.  Great advice.

Does your company top up your salary?

No idea.  (I doubt it.)  I am quitting anyway.... so I never bothered to find out

Do you plan to return to work after your leave?

No!  Although I will continue to work on my business.  I get paid by drawings and dividends so it won't affect my EI.

Anything else you would like to share with the class?   ;)

I am really looking forward to losing the day job!   And finding some other moms with babies to hang out with. (I did a LOT of swimming dates, lunches, etc after my first child was born.)

I plan on working as long as I can, probably to mid October. I work as a nanny right now so I won't get topped up! I would love to be a SAHM but it's just not financially doable for us. I don't plan on coming back to this job after mat leave, I will spend the last part of my leave hunting for a new job!

I definitely plan on hogging all 52 weeks!! :)
  • When do you plan to start your time off? I would love to say a month before my due date but I don't think that's realistic. I work for a family business and depending how quickly we find someone to replace me I don't want to leave my brothers and sister high and dry.

Are you going to share the time with the Dad or are you hogging all 52 weeks to yourself? I'm taking all of my leave for myself. My DH is self employed so he can't get EI anyways.

Does your company top up your salary? I think my salary will be topped up for the first six weeks.

Do you plan to return to work after your leave? Yes. I mean things could change but I really like my job and I really like working. I think that DH and I would have to significantly change our lifestyle and my income is high and I don't think we want to do that after our first.

Anything else you would like to share with the class? I may or may not go back to work part time after 9 months... I know we get a full year but as I said I really like work and this being a family owned and operated business I think that I would like to come back at least 2 days a week starting at the 9 month mark. But again - who knows.

You can actually start it 12 weeks before your due date but you must give your employer 6 weeks notice :)

I'm a SAHM now but with DD I went on mat leave 2 weeks before my due date and was a week late. I used that time to clean the house from top to bottom and get DDs room more organized.

So, because I'm not taking mat leave this time (because I can't) DH and I are thinking if him taking some. We will see, but it won't be the whole year. The place he works couldn't handle that, lol!

When I went on mat leave with my DD my work place did not top me off. DHs place of employment, however, does. To 80%, so that will be nice :)

I will be working for myself after mat leave (part time dog groomer) so I will return to work after three months.

The year goes fast ladies, make everything you can out of it. Get into play groups, it saved my sanity. Also, fill out the online forms for mat leave the second you go on mat leave. It usually takes about 4 weeks before you get your first payment. So save extra money to cover that time.

This time i'm a sahm ( on long term family leave).

Last time I had a lot of saved up vacation/sick time. plus i was getting very very pissed off at work. so i left at 34 weeks because I had the time. It was governement so I did get a top up. We didn't share the time off but dh did take two weeks off when dd was born.

Dh would be entitled to parental leave, but since we are now single income its tight and would be impossible on 55% of his wage.

I plan on working as long as I can.  I don't plan on taking the full year.  I'm a teacher and the thoughts of going back mid-year makes me twitchy.  I started a job mid-year one time (although in that situation I was the sub taking over someone else's mat leave) and it was all kinds of disaster, so I'll be going back in September.  SO is more than welcome to the other 10 weeks if he wants them.

My employer tops up for 16 weeks, I believe.  I still have to check with my union about that.  I have to let my employer know before I'm 5 months, so I'll be writing HR fairly soon.
  • I have a week of vacation that I am saving for the 2nd week of November, so I can start mat leave officially as close to the due date as possible.

I plan on hogging all 52 weeks. DH's company gets 2 weeks when baby is born & then his company shuts down around Christmas time for a little over 2 weeks, so based on good timing, he will have a whole month off!

I have no idea if my company tops me up. We're commission based, so something tells me they won't. But I plan on inquiring with HR once word is officially out that i'm pregnant.

Unfortunately, I think I'll have to return to work. However, I would love to find a new job rather than go back to the old one. It's a stressful job, where the income fluctuates per month with staggered hours, not what I would look forward to doing with a 1 yr old!

  • Definitely planning to work as long as I can although I know there is a strong possibility that the doctors may have something else to say about that *fingers crossed*.

I will have vacation from this year and will also accumulate vacation for the year I'm off, which will likely take me into 2016. I plan to take the full 52 wks and am topped up for the maternity portion of the leave.

DH works in an industry which slows down over the winter and may very well be laid off for a few months in both early 2015 and again in 2016. Despite the reduced income I'm kind of looking forward to him being home when the baby first arrives, as well as when I first return to work so that we can delay child care costs.

I have to return to work. I'm the larger wage earner and I'm the one with the benefits and pension. So, no way around it :) To be honest, I love my career so can't imagine it any other way.

  • With my last pregnancy I got laid off at 4 months.  I called CRA cus I couldn't find a job and I was getting worried about my mat leave.  The lady told me, if your doctor feels that you are not fit to work then you can take 12 weeks sick leave prior to your mat leave.  At first, I was like, but I'm fine to work.  She said, "yes, but if for any reason your doctor feels you are unable to work, you can go on sick leave and then have mat leave".  I finally got the picture lol.  So I asked my doctor to write a note diagnosing anxiety (well when I told him my situation I unintentionally started balling so he was ready to write anything) and I got 12 weeks sick leave then 52 weeks mat leave.  It was amazing.  I had extreme pelvic pain with my last pregnancy, so if I start feeling really bad again I may utilize that again.
  • I'll probably stay at work as long as possible. We'll see how I'm feeling of course, but if I'm fine I think two weeks before due date would be the soonest I'd begin leave.
We won't be sharing the 52 weeks, hubs will take a week when the kraken gets here (and deter his mother from overstaying her welcome) and gets time off at Christmas.
Unfortunately my job definitely won't top up. I was looking for a different job when I found out the news! Won't be returning to this job afterwards, but I'm hoping to find a flexible and more fulfilling job after leave. Financially, if I can be a SAHM afterwards, I will.
  • When do you plan to start your time off?  I worked right up until the end last time but I plan on taking a week or two before my due date this time and relaxing.

Are you going to share the time with the Dad or are you hogging all 52 weeks to yourself? I'm taking it all!!

Does your company top up your salary? My company is amazing, they top me up to 95% for the entire 52 weeks, I actually have more $ on mat leave since I don't have to drive 2 hours every day.

Do you plan to return to work after your leave? Absolutely, I love my job and I'll need it with 2 kiddos running around

Anything else you would like to share with the class? Been really worried about having 2 babies to take care of, I know we'll be fine but I'm nervous!

  • When do you plan to start your time off?

I was planning on working right up until about November 1 (I'm due November 9), but after reading some of the advice in this thread I might take a week or two before- I'm just afraid of being bored and uncomfortable!

Are you going to share the time with the Dad or are you hogging all 52 weeks to yourself?

It's all for me!!!! DH was recently hired by the government and works shifts so he actually gets some days off in a row which I think will be helpful and I know we have some family that will help when he's at work. He also now makes more money than I do so it makes more sense for him to continue working.

Does your company top up your salary?

I don't think so unfortunately. I work for a an agent of a larger company, but I am considered his employee rather than the big company's employee. The big company likely tops up, but not my employer.

Do you plan to return to work after your leave?

I would love to say no, but I will likely have to return as I don't think it makes sense for us financially. If I could work part-time that would be ideal, but I don't know if decent part-time work would be easy to find. I will likely be applying to positions at the head office of my company though rather than returning to my current position.

  • When do you plan to start your time off?

I am hoping to work as long as possible. Possibly even until the beginning of November, maybe just reducing my hours of work. My manager and district manager are being really good about my pregnancy so we said when the time comes we can figure everything out.

Are you going to share time with the dad or hog it all to yourself?

I will be hogging it all! DH will take a few days off when LO is born but he is the primary bread maker in our family, my pay is just extra to keep as a "just incase." Although I will be missing work I know a baby is going to be keeping me busy!

Does your company top up your salary?

Yes they do! And I will also get to keep my bonuses as well!

Do you plan to return to work after your leave?

Yes I will be returning to work after my leave. Although I would love to stay at home with my little one, I can make arrangements to work certain times and take weekends off if need be. I work in retail, and I can work between 32 and 40 hours and still be considered full time! I know my husband makes more then enough for me to stay at home, but I like being able to help pay the bills and help put money aside for collage and retirement( even though that is a ways away!)
  • All I can say is that I wish I were Canadian. I will work until I go into labor and cry while dropping off my six week old baby to go back to work.

Don't reduce your hours. It will affect your EI which is what maternity and parental leave are.
  • @Maelara‌ I've heard that if you wait until before you leave to do it, it doesn't have that big of an effect in EI, I will look into it before I do it. Thanks for the heads up

This makes me want to cry!  It is so crazy to me that you only get 6 weeks in the US - we are so lucky here.

  • Hey Canadian Mat Leave Mamas. My manager is being not very helpful about how maternity leave works or when to find information. Is there a federal gov or provincial gov website with info? Not about specific retailers but about general EI application I guess. I don't necessarily trust Google for this info but am trying to research now, thought I'd see if anyone knew already. Also I know it's early, I just want to know what to expect :) Thanks in advance!
  • @flutterbuggie I'm in Alberta. I'm having a look on Service Canada right now... Also I love the pic in your siggy
  • MaelaraMaelara member
Service canada will have everything you need. Just use their search option. You don't apply until you go on maternity leave. You can fill out everything online and you will need your ROE. You have to mail that in once you get it. Anything province specific will be taken care of when you fill out the form online. If you have a service canada building where you live, I believe you can get them to help you. But it's pretty easy online, just time consuming. Make sure you know everything about what you make and when and keep track of any time off you take.
  • MaelaraMaelara member
Oh! And most employers won't know much unless they've done it. So cut them some slack ;)
  • Also, make sure you read everything ahead of time and are familiar with the form etc., I found it a little complicated/confusing.  And submit it as soon as you go on mat leave, I think someone else mentioned before but it takes a while to process and there's a 2 week deductible where you don't get paid.
    imageimage

  • I get a bonus in April for the previous year. For example I will get my 2014 bonus in April 2015.
Anyone have any idea how that will affect my EI payments? I would hope if it was for the time I worked prior to mat leave it would be ok.

I don't think it works that way. Sorry. You need to inform them of any earnings and they will adjust your EI accordingly. You can always call the hotline and ask.

I didn't find it too difficult but I did have to call them twice and my employer once to finish. I was on salary though. My BFF did it and she is hourly and she had a much more difficult time with it. I had to wait 4 weeks before I got any money at all, so save up ladies! I don't know how you can become familiar with the forum without actually doing it??

Boo! I'm going to call them in the next couple weeks so I know. If that's the case I might have to work something out so I can get it prior to mat leave.

I read all the FAQs etc etc on the website and printed out the form ahead of time so I knew what info I needed to put in and so then when I went to actually do it, it wasn't so bad.  I was lucky enough that I didn't have to call EI but I've heard calling them sucks balls - did you have any trouble?

  • Weird question... I am a teacher not on contract and no one will hire my preg. Ass for next year so I am out of a job as of July. Can I go on ei? Then reapply once I can't work due to baby? Sorry its kind of a weird question, I may just call in July to find out.

Ooh! I didn't know they had the form on there. That's really awesome! Calling them seriously sucks ass. There are a million options and none lead to an actual person. And the 'info' they have on there is not helpful, at all. So a tip for you ladies, when you call, hit 0 until you get into que for an actual person. I once waited only 10 minutes, the other time 45 minutes. But the very first time I spent an hour going through all the options. Yeah, don't do that!
  • Shit I'm a moron, I don't think I was able to print out the form ahead of time because you have to fill it out online.  Total baby brain, don't listen to anything I say...!

  • Question, especially to those who have gone on Mat leave before:

I will have about 25 vacation days saved up, which I'd like to tack on BEFORE mat leave (last time alone, and I'm afraid if I carry them over to the end of mat leave, and I change my status - probably not going back full time - something will happen and I'll lose the days/pay). Does anyone know if taking vacation right before mat leave, especially a month of it, would affect my EI?

I tried calling once, but there was not an option to be placed on hold - they just said to call back. Ain't no one got time for that.

    Thanks.
  • And in response to the original questions:
When do you plan to start your time off?
well, if I take my holiday, I'd start holiday at 36 weeks, then mat leave on my due date. I may be able to slog it out a bit longer, but I started counting down work weeks pretty much from day 1.
Are you going to share the time with the Dad or are you hogging all 52 weeks to yourself?
I'm going to share it, with me taking the bulk. He'll take some time off with me in the summer (2 months? maybe three), when the baby is at a fun stage and we can go up North and be hermits on a lake. I figure it's only fair - he hates his job, and it helps feel like a light at the end of the tunnel. We make the same pay, pretty much.
Does your company top up your salary?
To 80% or something for 3 months? Haven't told them yet, not entirely sure. They are trying to change that, but we are unionised, and hopefully we can hold out until I get to benefit!
Do you plan to return to work after your leave?
Not full time. I live in a big city, it wouldn't be financially worth it, and traffic is getting so bad. I can imagine sitting in traffic cursing the world while someone else gets to play with my kid. Not worth it, going to work something else out.
Anything else you would like to share with the class?
I can't imagine living south of the border. I'm equally as excited about mat leave as I am about the baby. Flame away, but I can't help it!
  • @featherweather

Your last comment sounds familiar.  Did I want to get pregnant and have a baby 7 years ago?  YES.  Absolutely.

Was the mat leave away from work the nice, fluffy icing on that cake?   ....yes....

I think you can. Call again and press 0 until you get into que. Don't bother with the options, they won't lead to a real person.

  • I don't think it would affect your EI at all, I think you would have to wait until your vacation days are done (assuming you're still getting paid during that time) and then apply for EI once you're officially unemployed.  I agree with @Maelara though, call them and find out.
