PSA Leg Cramp Ladies, another easy remedy!

Iron pills don't agree with me, so my midwife told me to take a tablespoon of molasses twice a day for the iron.  I started that up last week because I felt like I was dragging...and my leg/foot cramps stopped!  I then looked at it more closely, and it has more potassium in a tablespoon than a serving of coconut water or banana, both of which I hate!  It's been sooo nice not waking up with a charlie horse or having to get up to stretch my feet on tiptoes when I get a foot cramp.  I literally just down a spoonful in the morning and a spoonful before bed, it's kind of like taking a shot.  You can also mix it with a glass of milk but I don't like that as much.  Or molasses cookies, or molasses on oatmeal...anything to get it in your system.  It's a wonderful thing :)

Thanks! I had the worst charlie horse the other night, and my calf has been sore since. I'm going to try the molasses. My iron is low anyway, so 2 birds, 1 stone, right?

  • I've never bought molasses, does it have to be any certain kind (virgin, organic, etc) or just plain old molassss from Wal-mart.

Do you think it causes constipation like iron pills? I am supposed to start taking iron pills but am hesitant because early on I has a lot of problems with constipation.

  • Oh wow. Very cool. I'm on iron pills. I have molasses in the house due to that is what I use when I have to give pills crushes up to my horses. I am not too fond of molasses. Darn wish I was. I try to have a banana daily. That does help w the Charlie horses. Omg they hurt and for days later my calf hurts!!!

  • My midwife also recommended 500 mg of magnesium for leg cramps, which has completely stopped mine! Worth a shot!

  • Yup, the thick sugary stuff! I was told unsulphured blackstrap molasses, so that's what I got, but that's also the only kind they had in my store. It does not give me the same problems that iron pills do, at all! It's why I take it instead of the pills if I need to up my iron.

  • How badly does it taste alone? My doc is busting my chops over not taking the iron pills. I saw on dr. Oz today that eating foods with iron along with food with vitamin c can increase iron absorption by 500%. Also cooking in a cast iron pan helps, especially with wet foods like sauces.

  • @sumochik, it's not bad, and it slides right down.  If vitamin C helps, have a glass of juice as a chaser and it'll add the C and get the taste out of your mouth :).

Awesome suggestion! You can also give Gatorade a try. If I have a small glass every other day or so it keeps me from getting leg cramps.
