Trouble TTC

Do you think they would cancel DH's SA over this?

The paperwork from our RE states to abstain "at least 2 days, and no more than 4 days" before the SA. DH angrily insisted that his numbers will be better if he waits longer. We BDed Saturday PM, which was 4.5 days before the SA, and he refused to do anything this morning or any time before the SA.

I am worried that this will mess up the counts, especially since he has a motility problem. The thing is, in China he was told to wait 5-7 days (sounds like very outdated protocol to me). He even understands how motility gets better if you don't wait too long, but he said he is more concerned about having his counts up. To me this sounds silly, since I know we are just trying to have realistic info about his issue...but he is so sensitive about all this!

I am feeling a little crummy because I don't want the RE to feel like we are uncooperative. I wonder if he has other patients who do something like this. Would the numbers be really off by waiting an extra 1/2 day? I guess I am curious if anyone else's REs accept a longer period of abstinence before an SA, which would reassure me that it's fine?

    He will be okay with the 4.5 days. I think mine actually said 3-5 days. It'll be fine! :)

    Our instructions for all S/A's (and DH has had like eight) say to abstain 3-5 days so I'm sure it's fine.  But on the paperwork I'd put the real amount - don't fudge it to sound like you followed their instructions.  If they mention it was longer just explain timing, planning, and DH got in the way.  If they want to redo the S/A - which happens sometimes anyway after the results you can reason with your husband that it's a good way to see which way is better - waiting only 2-3 days or waiting 5.  You'll be able to compare the results and see which was better.

    April 2014 Started Clomid cancelled IUI due to a low sample

  • My paperwork said 2-5 days too so I'm sure 4.5 won't be that bad. I was freaking out because my husband only had 1.5 days because of short notice.

    I bet the worst patients the RE's have are the men.
    Fucking bump!!!!

  • Awesome! Thank you so much, all! Maybe our RE has had experience with stubborn guys and he says 4 days to keep the DHs in line...so my DH only thinks he got away with something. :)

    @snegde I know, right??

    @katib77 So true!! I am paranoid of our results being bad and then paying for unhelpful treatment...and that is a genius way to convince him to use a different timing next time.

    @cymber217 I like that thought. We've already been starting to fret about how we're going to time BDing before an IUI so that would help us plan it out!

    Haha absolutely, if my DH is any indication! Missing vitamins, not following SA instructions, vacillating every day on how committed he is to this process, and not showing up to the initial consult..and this is before we've even gotten through testing. Sigh. Did you do a repeat SA to confirm numbers after the last-minute notice?

    Yeah, my DH has had 3 SA over the past 2-3 months, and we've waited different degree of times, and at least one time it was definitely longer than 6 days, oops, but I think that was the highest one for numbers, and the shorter amount of time was the worst numbers, so don't tell your DH because you don't want his theory to go to his head :)

    But you should definitely be fine at 4.5 days, I think our rec was 3-5 days or something like that. Good luck! :)

    Hmm, my DH was told 2-7 days. I doubt 4.5 will make a huge difference, though all of these responses are making me worry about his 7 day abstinence.

  • I can understand why he's so upset. For now, I don't think the extra day will hurt. If the SA really doesn't go well, maybe it will convince him to retake the test with only 3 days of abstinence. Hopefully, the numbers will be great. Good luck!

    No we aren't doing a repeat SA. We don't have MFI and I think it was just something they have to do before IVF even though were doing ICSI anyway. Sometimes I think they just nickle and dime us to death. I paid $250 to find out what I already know everything was normal. That money could have paid for half a days dose of med for MY stimming.
    Fucking bump!!!!
  • @bunnyberry  We're hoping, but if you got nothing to work with it's hard.  We may be going to IUI with donor.  All hinges on what uro says.

  • Our RE recommends 2-5 days as well. We have done a variety of different amounts of time between several SAs and IUIs. We got our best numbers at 3 days. After 4 and my DHs count and motility both decline. At 2 days, his motility is better but count stinks. I definitely agree to try varying times and see what comes out best.

    @theholmanherd That's a smart plan.
    @pintobean39 Sounds very frustrating!! Especially since you were going with ICSI anyways!
    @lillovebug79 Thanks for the breakdown on number of days. That will be a relief if the results are bad, maybe we'll just try different days of abstinence.

    Thank you all for your help...DH is geared up for his test tomorrow (how unfair that he gets to do that while I had an icky ouchy HSG this morning, haha)!
