Pick my next book, please

Need suggestions for when DH goes to the library. I like fiction and nonfiction. Examples of my faves are The Prince of Tides, Catch-22, East of Eden. I want to read The Road, but I'm afraid it will be too depressing. TIA!

  • Never heard of it, but just googled and it sounds like something I'd like for sure! Sounds a little similar to Middlesex, have you read that one?

I just finished reading A Discovery Of Witches.  It's series with witches, and vampires and gushy love.  I personally liked it better than Twilight.  But I'm also reading another series, the main character is a war nurse in WWII and she becomes involved in series of murders.  It's The Bess Crawford series.

@crazycornball, I loved The Passage, I could not get through book 2 though.  I am going to attempt it again though, I have a friend that loved 2 and urged me to try again.

  • I won't say The Road is not depressing, but you should really read it, it's one of my favorite books ever.

I'm reading Salt, Sugar, Fat, very interesting if you like food and nonfiction.

I've been considering The Road for a while, too. Have you read The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks?

  • @karbird5, I have and it's AMAZING.

I swear I don't love all the books, it's just this thread mentioned two that are truly worth it, The Road and Henrietta Lacks.
  • I'll have to try The Road, then. I've heard of Henrietta Lacks, but not read the book. That one is nonfiction, right? I'm going to look up the rest of these. Probably just try to read every one mentioned!! Thanks so much!

  • @Little Jerry‌ yes Henrietta is nonfiction
  • Yes, @bearsbearsbears‌, saw that one mentioned on reddit recently and really want to read! Also, Escape from Camp 14, also about N. Korea.

  • Prince of Tides was one of my favorite books.  You should try Beach Music, it's also good by him but of course Prince of Tides is better.

Also I'd read anything by Trevanian, but try Shibumi for a slam dunk.

From a non-fiction angle, try "Sin in the Second City" by Karen Abbott. It's the story of the Everleigh sisters who started the first "clean" brothel in Chicago (the girls were educated, didn't drug/rob the men, etc...) and all the crap they endured from the competition, politicians and the church. Very interesting read!
