Trouble TTC

Following an HSG ... no period and BFN???

Hello everyone,
I recently had an HSG conducted last month on CD12.  I am always between 32-34 days with my period, never late.  It's going on 2 1/2 weeks and I haven't gotten my period.  I took multiple tests and they're all BFNs.  So I called my RE and they recommended that I get a blood test the following day, just to see if my levels were low....and BFN!  The nurse was going to discuss with the doctor is they should provide me with a prescription to force my period, but I haven't received a call yet that the doctor agrees with this method.  I have read a lot that some women won't see that they're pregnant until 8-12 weeks?  Anyone else been in this situation?  I am trying to be realistic and not get my hopes up, but I'd like to know what's going on with my body.

I'm sorry but if you have had negative HPTs and a negative blood test there is pretty much zero chance that you are pregnant at this time.

It is not uncommon for a woman's cycle to be different than her normal cycle following an HSG. I am really surprised that your doctor didn't mention this.

Eta: Sorry, I was thinking about a laparoscopy. I'm actually not sure if an HSG could affect your cycle. My first comment still stands. Are you doing anything to track your ovulation? If not, you probably just ovulated a bit later this month.

  • I've been reading up in preparation for my HSG next week. As @ky29 said, it can cause delayed ovulation. If you aren't tracking ovulation with your basal body temperature, you probably don't want to force a period until your doctor tests progesterone, to make sure that you really haven't ovulated.

It is always possible that you ovulated later than usual, so your period would start later than usual. It is even possible that you ovulated much later, and are too soon after ovulation for even a blood test to detect a pregnancy, another reason to be careful before forcing a period if you aren't sure when ovulation happened. Good luck!

And if you are interested in learning a bit more about your cycle to help cut down on all that stressful-hopeful-waiting (although we all get caught in it every once in a while), I suggest starting with Luteal Phase and HCG detection. Good luck!!

It's been 2.5 weeks since CD12 - so you are now on CD30? Or has it been longer than that?

Could be an anovulatory cycle which tend to be longer. Or maybe the stress delayed ovulation. Either way synthetic Progesterone is generally safe during pregnancy and coming off of it won't "force" a period if you are pregnant (since your body would be producing its own Progesterone).
  • Do you know when you ovulated? Is it just 2 1/2 weeks since your HSG or 2 1/2 weeks since your longest known cycle? If it's just 2 1/2 weeks since you HSG that was on CD12, it's still not an unusually long cycle. If it's 2 1/2 weeks after your longest known cycle, maybe you just didn't ovulate this cycle or you ovulated later than usual.

Unfortunately, a negative blood test means that you aren't pregnant. HCG is available in the blood pretty soon after implantation. FWIW, I've never heard of anyone getting negatives for 8 weeks when they were actually pregnant. I think the people who didn't know until later on probably weren't testing or trying to get pregnant. A blood test is pretty conclusive.
