Birth experience.

I planned on a natural birth for this pregnancy and after finding out it's twins I don't want to change my plans. I am having the worst time finding a doctor who will agree to a vaginal birth for twins. Anybody had the birth I want? What was your experience?

No experience here, but we are planning a vaginal birth if our babies are head down when the time comes. We will have an epidural placed in early labour, but won't used it until/if I request it.

If your goal is a vaginal birth and your babies have good positions you have a decent chance of getting it, but their size, positions and chronicity (ie. identicals or fraternals) will affect it all.

Sorry, I'm not in your shoes. I'm just kind of wondering if there is a reason why no doctor wants to agree to delivering your twins vaginally? I would want to do what's best for my babies and the fact that you are having such a hard time finding a doctor who will give you what you want tells me that maybe there is a reason for that.

My OB was very on board with a vaginal med free birth. I would switch doctors. You want someone who will encourage you during that whole process.

I told my OB I wanted to try a med free vaginal birth, then I begged her for an epi, then begged her for a c sec.

Many doctors in my area only deliver twins by c-section and many doctors when I ask just say they have no experience delivering vaginally. I am having di-di twins and there is no reason they can't be delivered vaginally except the doctors don't ever do it.

Research. It does pay off. It took me three months to be comfortable w my ob. I found small practice. Cs rate of only 9% versus others who are over 40%. And they also deliver in a level 4 nicu so in case of anything babies n I are all covered.

I agree...we did not even start talking about birth options until later so wondering why it is brought up now...I am 30 weeks with di/di twins...but both are currently transverse...so my odds are pretty slim on anything but a c-section...it is dependent on their positions...so I would look around since you are so early to find a doctor who is ok with trying what you want...as long as it is safe for the babies.

I made it clear at the beginning my preference was for a vag birth and my OB was open to it if the stars aligned correctly. Yes, there are some doctors who refuse to deliver twins vaginally ever but it's far from an across the board thing.

I ended up w a c/s due to a variety of factors: baby a was smaller, breech and his cord prolapsed when my water broke.

I STRONGLY suggest you get an epi placed if you get to attempt a vag birth even if you have no intention of ever putting meds in it. I was put under general anesthesia and it was really hard to not be able to be present at all for their birth.

Call around and find out, some policies are also hospital policies. Many OBs are okay with vaginal delivery if they are head down, some will allow an attempt if only A is head down. I haven't heard of OBs who will allow a vaginal attempt at all if both are breech. Find a provider who is supportive of your wishes, but also prepare to be flexible as nothing is a given...especially with multiples. I also second the rec to get the epi placed prior to attempting vaginal delivery.

I wanted to go natural and my midwife and OB were totally okay with it but the boys had different plans...smaller Baby A, double transverse, and cord entanglement made me an automatic c/s.

No doctor is going to guarantee a vaginal birth 11 weeks in. At this point I would be asking my OB what the circumstances would have to be in order to have a vaginal birth. Most would say that if you have 2 babies head down and no other complications, vaginal is the safest. Some will agree to breech extraction of Baby B if A is bigger and head down. There are many situations and circumstances where a c-section is the safest option for you and the babies, so if I were you I would start making peace with the possibility.

Like you, I was inclined toward natural birth. But the more I became acquainted with the many risks and possible complications of twin pregnancy/birth, the more I looked to my MFM for guidance. I was lucky that both my babies were head down, and I opted for the epidural because I wanted everyone in the room (including myself and my husband) to be focused on getting the babies out safely as opposed to managing my pain. It was absolutely positively blissful experience and I would not change a thing! There are lots of great c-section stories out there too.

I had a med free midwife birth in a birth center. Although my MFM is married to my midwife so he stood back just in case. My hospitals NICU was attached to the birth center ( sperate from normal L&D) and they are pro vaginal delivery for twins as this is their speciality and has been for 34 years. But baby placement is a huge factor in it.

Thanks everybody. I do know the risks and that I may end up with a section. I want a doctor that will be willing to consider if everything looks good. That way I know we are on the same page and if he says get a section I will be able to trust that judgement and say ok. I'm asking early this time because last time with a singleton I did not and found out at 32 weeks my doctor was not on board. I know switching doctors at 32 weeks with twins is not an option!

With my singleton, I switched OBs in early pregnancy after I got a nasty response to an innocent question about pitocin. I asked for recommendations of natural birth friendly OBs and chose one from there. I got my med free hospital birth and it was great.

Now with twins, my OB is just as supportive. She does have some of the same conditions others have mentioned (baby presentation, size, etc), but she wants me to have the birth I want to the point where she is giving me her personal # so she can deliver me even if she isn't officially on call.

My advice is to keep looking for an OB that meets your needs.

If conditions were perfect - both babies head down and baby A bigger than my OB would consider a vaginal delivery. I did meet both of these criteria but my girls were mono-di and IUGR so the OB and MFM said c-section. It was a great experience. No regrets.

I did have a vaginal delivery with my first daughter and that was also an amazing experience. Good luck too you'

My practice had doctors who wouldn't and doctors who would deliver twins vaginally. I was scheduled to be induced with a doctor who would if both babies were in position (which they were), but I ended up going a few days early due to baby A being IUGR and not responding to the BPP. The dr on call wouldn't do a vaginal delivery. So I ended up with a c/s. And honestly, I'm ok with that. I got to walk into the OR and it was much more relaxed than if it was an emergency situation, which was one if my fears.

I had a vaginal delivery with my first, and it was not a positive experience at all. Part of me was scared to go through that again times 2.

I left my midwife practice to a bigger OB practice at a bigger hospital. Our local hospital where I would have delivered a singleton only does twins by C-section… hospital rule. I wasn't ok with vaginal not even being an option so I went with a bigger hospital with a NICU and different doctor. It was the best decision as my boys arrived 10 weeks early so they needed the NICU, but I also was able to deliver them vaginally.
