How long will your doctor let you go?

I found out at my last appt that my ob's practice only let's you go 1 week past your due date. I've always heard of 2 weeks. Anyone else's have this 1 week rule?

  • Mine will perform a membrane sweep at 41wks, but don't look at induction until 42wks unless there's a reason. I guess it depends on the patient.

My OB's standard is 1 week, however she is "willing to discuss" up to two weeks but no later.

ETA: 1 week is defined as an induction as close to 41+0. In my case, I "turn" 40wks on a sunday, so I'd be induced monday at 41+1.

  • Mine will induce at 42, but you can decline. They have had women go to 43.

In my area they let you go 1 week + 3 days. They induce on week 41, day 3.

  • MW will let me go 10 days then we have to decide, but I think she will allow up to 2 weeks.

She already has me doing things that "jumpstart" labour to get things going before I go like a week over and try to begin all these things.
  • My doc will let me go 1-2 weeks (she told me 41 weeks but I did not specify if this was 41.0 or 41.6. I know she has allowed others to go to 42) but I am a vbac...assuming my BP stays down, but so far it is great. ACOG states that you are not past due until 42+ weeks...not 40 weeks plus 1 day. I have read a statistic before that about 14 percent of pregnancies will go past 42 weeks if not induced.

  • My doctor won't let me go over 1 week.  I have my 40 week appt on my due date May 7 so... if she isn't here by then I would assume that she is going to induce me the following Mon/Tues.
  • I've never made it past this point, but I've heard my OB's practice will start talking about induction at 41 weeks. You can opt to go up to 42 weeks with a lot more monitoring (NST, etc.).

  • My doctor's standard practice is 10 days following due date. You have an appointment on your due date and at that point schedule an induction for 10 days out, so you have an "eviction date" if it becomes necessary.

  • At my office, they would talk induction at 41 weeks, you can choose to have it at any point between that and 42+1 but at 42+1 you have to have something scheduled. She basically said if you make it to 41 weeks we shedule one and people always seem to deliver before it's scheduled.

  • I live in super hippie land so maybe that's why they are more flexible but she was like "2 weeks" then a pause "42 and one day". Yay! Kinda.

I hate when we talk about what Drs will 'let' us do. It is my body and I will not let anyone do anything to it without a valid medical reason.
The OBs in my midwives' office would like me to deliver by 41 weeks, but unless my or the baby's health is in trouble I plan to fight induction or a RCS just because of a date on a calendar. If I get to 42 weeks then I will consider intervention. I'm totally fine being monitored via NSTs to make sure everything is fine.

Yes, that is true re "let," but a doctor can also refuse to continue care with a referral. I don't want to be changing to a new practitioner at 41 or 42 weeks or resorting to just showing up at a hospital in labor...although, I have heard of ladies who have done this.

  • My Dr said that she will do a sweep tomorrow if I want her to.

She hasn't mentioned induction timelines.  I know that she's really hoping I will go into labour myself because my blood pressure has been much better this time.  I think with my sister, the same dr scheduled an induction for 10 days after her due date.

I think it really depends on the circumstances of each pregnancy.

This, if everything looks healthy there is no reason to cap it at one week "over due."

Due dates are guesstimates, not expiry dates.

  • We'll talk induction at 41 if I don't go on my own before. Hoping for a vbac, too, otherwise she'd probably consider inducing earlier. Praying I go early on my own because of family events the week after I'm due
  • I actually asked about this at my last appointment.  The usual practice is to schedule an induction for ten, maybe eleven, days after the due date.  I asked how flexible that policy is.  At first she was saying eleven is a stretch and they stick pretty hard to inducing at ten days, but then she mentioned that actually, if you really don't want to induce they will have you come in every three days instead to make sure things are still ok.

I remember them scanning especially to make sure Benjamin still had enough amniotic fluid when I was five or so days overdue, and at that appointment they scheduled the induction for ten days after due date in case he didn't come on his own.
  • Mine only goes to 41 as well.

general protocol is 41 weeks however, barring potential complications, they will allow you to defer to 42 weeks.  They will not let you go past 42 weeks.

ETA:  At 40+1, they have you come in for an NST and u/s to make sure things still look okay.  I never got to that point (delivered at 39+3) so I don't know how often they bring you in after that.

  • I wonder too if it matters whether or not a dating u/s is done.  My OB does a dating u/s for every patient around the assumed 7 week mark, so while the due date is still obv a guess, it's a fairly good guess, so to me, it makes more sense that my office doesn't "let" you go past 42 weeks.  They told me at that point, there are high risks of placental deterioration and the risks start outweighing the benefits.

(disclaimer, I also have no idea how strict they are on that since I didn't even get to 40w with #1, but they seemed pretty solid on it when we were talking about post-due date things the first time.)

  • Mine will talk induction at 40 1/2 weeks and induce at 41 weeks.
  • The midwives will likely let me go to about 42 weeks unless there's a reason (or me insisting). However, my SIL1 who works in a NICU strongly suggests not going over 41 weeks.

  • My midwife said we'll start talking about induction at around 41 weeks. I think they'll let me to to 42 weeks if I want, but not longer. Hopefully I won't have to find out!

Mine generally schedule an induction if you get to 41 weeks, but they've told me they typically have a couple of women a year with healthy and uneventful pregnancies that will go to 42. They will just do more close monitoring for fluid levels and the like in that case. I'll push for 42 weeks if I get there...probably.

  • I really hate saying they'll "let me" since it's my body & I have to consent. ACOG says up to 42 weeks is completely normal & within range. My provider practices by evidence based medicine & so that's what they "allow". But I wouldn't consent to any induction before then anyways without medical reason.

  • My OB prefers 41 weeks as well but will allow you to go to 42 if you request to do so.  I have an SUA, so she'd prefer to induce me by 41 weeks if LO doesn't come on her own by then.

  • A few appointments back I asked how long she'll let me go. Her words "you won't go passed 41wks, placentas get old" all I could muster up was okay!!
  • My dr said 1 week with DD. (Came on her own 4 days past) DS was early so we didn't talk about it then. She has already told me I will not go to my due date with this one because my last two were both 8 lb 3oz+ and I gained less than 25 lbs with each. Said I have big babies so she won't let me go past.

  • My OB said at the 40 week appointment, they'll schedule you to be induced 10 days after EDD if you want. They want to give the baby a chance to come on its own. They don't want moms going past 42 weeks. I didn't ask if they'll "let" you because I'll schedule the induction if I'm late.
