DH has expressed interest in being more involved with LO since all he
does now is cuddle and diaper change. I guess he's jealous I have boobs
and he doesn't haha. We figured the evening would be perfect for him
to introduce a bottle and while he's doing that I can pump. LO does
great with the bottle and the boob (thus far at least) and we've been
BFing successfully since birth (LO is 4 weeks now). Today was the first
day of simultaneous bottle feeding and pumping and it raised some
concerns for me...
1) We offered a bit over 3 oz and LO inhaled
that soooo quickly. DH did his best to slow him down (held him more
upright... kept the bottle a bit more parallel to the floor... stopped
frequently to burp) but LO finished all 3 oz in about 7 minutes. Is that too fast??
Normally he's attached to my boobs for close to 30 minutes... I don't
know how much more stalling DH could have done. Every time he pulled
the bottle away LO would freak out.
2) How do I know if I gave LO enough milk?
He wasn't freaking out when the bottle was done... but he was fussy for
the next 15 minutes ... but now he's out cold in his swing. By the
time I finished pumping (15 minutes on both sides simultaneously) I had
pumped 5 oz. Considering I nurse for closer to 30 minutes, wouldn't
that suggest that LO actually consumes 5 oz? Should I have given him more?
3)
I pumped for 15 minutes, but by 11 or 12 minutes I was down to drips.
Does that mean that it takes less than 15 minutes for me to "empty
out"? Often when I breastfeed, LO is attached to one side for about 20
minutes and then switches to the other side for up to 10 minutes. I've
even gone times where LO will stay on one side for close to 30 minutes
and then refuse the 2nd side. If they
say babies are more efficient than pumps... does that mean he's just
comfort sucking for any time beyond the time my pump emptied my breasts?
Thanks for any insight!!
Re: Can you help me troubleshoot some breastfeeding/pumping/bottle feeding questions?
You just can't discern from one pumping session exactly what is going on when you BF.
I would get a really slow bottle. We have had luck with the dr brown bottle with a premie nipple.
When you've been married this long, you need a ticker to remind you.
