New to Everything

Hello. I am new to getting help with having a baby but my DH and I have been trying for almost three years now. I feel so behind but I never thought we would be able to afford fertility treatments. Now that I'm in my career we are able to explore this but it feels so overwhelming!

We went to our first meeting on the 16th but it was too late in my cycle to do anything other than take a boatload of blood and a baseline US. My doctor did say that my uterus and ovaries look "really good" which made me happy. He could also see that I was getting ready to ovulate that weekend (between the 18th and the 22nd). My DH and I BD'd every other day the whole weekend and now I am waiting to see if it worked. I am really doubting though since I have all the symptoms of an impending period. Also I used an OPK the whole weekend and never got a positive. I'm not sure if i did it right though.

I don't mind the disappointment from this cycle though since once AF starts we can move forward. Doc says the next steps are a HSG and an hysteroscopy. Also, we'll get my DH in for a sperm test. I'm anxious to get started.
It feels good to just talk about everything. I feel like my husband and sister are tired of hearing me obsess over it.

Quick question - you're going to have a HSG and a hysteroscopy? I believe that most of us have had the HSG to make sure that our tubes were open and that our uterus looks good, but I am not certain that a hysteroscopy is standard. I'd double check with your doc to see why he/she wants to do a hysteroscopy.

Hi and welcome!! I had an HSG and a SIS but I never had the hysteroscopy. I actually never heard of it until reading your post! Did your RE tell you it's purpose and when you would have it done?

Hello. My doctor said I might need one depending on the results of the HSG. He didn't discuss it much but he said it could be used to fix any problems found during the HSG. I of course did obsessive research as soon as I got home. What I read says it uses a camera to view the lining of the uterus and could also remove polyps or fibroids. Fingers crossed I won't need it (unless it gets me a baby faster, then I'm all for it lol).

Ok. Good. Hopefully you won't have any problems that will require you to do the hysteroscopy. I had a hysteroscopy after a HSG and Saline Sonogram to remove an adhesion/scar tissue.

Is a saline sonogram better than an hsg? Do you need to do both? I was just wondering because we'll be paying for most of these tests out of pocket and all of the treatment.

I had an HSG and a SHG (similar to a SIS I think). The HSG was checking my tubes and uterus and the SHG was more checking out the anatomy, lining, and doing measurements of my uterus. They thought maybe there was something small in my uterus during the HSG but weren't really able to tell. Turns out it was just an air bubble and they didn't see anything on the SHG. Both were pretty painful for me but were over pretty quickly.

I had to do both! From what I can understand a HSG checks your tubes and a SIS (saline sonogram) checks your uterus...it was nothing like an HSG goes as far as pain and discomfort!

Welcome! I was in your same spot in January - we'd tried 5 years and decided it was time to call an RE (although DH had gotten a SA a few years earlier since it was cheap and easy, so we knew already his counts were low).

I know your feeling about having so much to learn! At first I felt like, Whoa slow down I'm not sure I'm ready for all this...but now waiting for CD1 for testing, I can't wait to move forward (even cheered the spotting that arrived today - that was a first).

I hope your HSG comes out great and all the other testing too. Hopefully can find an easy fix and you can get off this board soon, LOL!

Spending a couple months on 3T has taught me a boatload about IF. In January, I couldn't think of a single question for the RE and kept feeling like it was rude to ask about any treatments when we had just met (weird right?). But the ladies on here have shared so much info that now I am full of informed questions for the RE when the time comes. It has made a huge difference and made me feel competent to handle this scary area of life. It's even made me bold enough to stand up a bit for IF with coworkers and family. I'm sure you'll love it here.

I don't think that you would need to do both. From what I've read, most RE's start with the HSG to confirm that your tubes are open. If there are any 'spots' that need to be looked at a little more, you might have a saline sonogram and possibly a hysteroscope. If you start with the HSG and your tubes appear open and there are no 'spots' to investigate, you should not need a saline sonogram or hysteroscopy.

@awiley10‌ @CandaceC1020‌ I had the SIS to check the lining of my uterus and any possible abnormalities. My HSG was completely clear but my RE still wanted to do the SIS. And that was clear too so who knows!?

Welcome:) I'm sorry you find yourself in the 3T world, but you will definitely learn a lot while here. Just by lurking I learned so much before my first RE appointment. I also felt so much more prepared to advocate for myself when needed. Good luck with your HSG and the rest of your testing!
