Are you going to cut your hair?

Ive heard lots of people recommend cutting your hair when you have a baby because it's easier to deal with.  Do you plan on doing this?  Have you?  What's your take on it?  I cut my hair short last time and hated it!  It was actually harder for me to deal with because I have curly hair.

Re: Are you going to cut your hair?

  • I usually wear my hair short in a bob, but with DS, I found it easier to keep it a little longer and pull it back in a ponytail.Nothing fancy at all, but it kept my hair away from his super strong grip:)

  • I often fluctuate every few years from very long to very short hair.  I cut my hair when my son was around 7 months old, but am thinking I will keep it longer this time, but I can be impulsive, so I won't be surprised if I chop it off.
My hair is wavy and often looks better shorter because it's a lot of work to straighten it and I don't put the time in to it where it looks best.  A pony tail is easiest for me with long hair, but doesn't look the best.
  • i love my long hair.. i need a haircut just because it's been growing so fast but i think i will keep it long .. i'm not crazy about the idea of cutting it just for the baby? i get that it's less for them to tug and pull on but i still need to be comfortable and confident in how i look - not just cutting it so she doesn't pull on it

  • Never. I hate short hair. The shortest I'd go is right below my shoulders and then I get nervous. Give me ponytails and french braids. It's easier for me to wear a sock bun to bed with wet hair then have to fix short hair.

  • I agree with ponys being easy.  I always wear a messy bun.  My hair is curly enough to do all the work for me and i just straighten my bangs.

  • I cut mine about a month ago just because I was ready for something new.  It's about chin length, and I don't plan on cutting it again.

  • My hair is so fine, if I don't keep it long, it's impossible to keep back. Short hair and pony tails don't work for me nearly as well as long hair in braids/buns/headbands do. Plus it's harder for me to keep my short hair looking decent, even down.

    Long hair for life :-h
  • I have curly hair as well and short hair does not work with curly hair. Plus, I think it would be harder to have short hair than long hair. With short hair, you have to shower and style it every morning or it sticks up everywhere and looks weird. At least, that's how it is with my mom and sister, who both have short haircuts. With long hair, you can pull it back in a pony tail and go!

  • I tend to do a lot with my hair. braids, buns, gibson tucks, victory rolls, etc. Whenever I cut it short it ends up stressing me out more because I feel like styling it 'down' every day takes longer and then it's all over the place and in my way.

So no, I will not be cutting my hair.
  • I cut mine back in January! DH made the mistake of telling me while on vacation "if you don't plan on doing your hair you might as well cut it off." Well needless to say, he went to work one day and I got it cut! Love it though and think it's a lot easier to take care of!
  • I didn't cut my hair. It's a bit longer than I'd like right now, like a bit below my shoulders. Personally I think it's way easier to keep it a bit short, but long enough you can still throw it in a ponytail, like around your shoulders. I almost never have the energy or time to bother styling my hair, especially in the newborn phase.

However, this all depends on the person and your hair! I have curly hair, so short is way too much work. A friend of mine got a pixie cut after having her DD and it's easy for her, but for me it would be a nightmare!

  • I cut my really long hair super short when DS was about 7 months old. It was falling out (something to look forward to post partum), he kept pulling it, and I felt frumpy. I needed a change and I regretted it not long after. It was a pain to do every day and I didn't like the way it looked. Its finally grown out into a chin length bob that I like better, but I still can't wait for it to be pony tail length.

  • My hair is shoulder length.  I need a trim but am not planning on taking any real length of.  I want to be able to pull it back still as much as possible (which even at this length I can only get half of it to stay in a pony).  I know if I cut it any shorter it would be hard to get out of my face.  I do like my hair shorter though, so maybe later.
  • The idea of cutting hair just because you have a baby is silly to me. Long hair is easier to pull up into a pony. Short hair takes longer to style IMO

This! I have only been getting trims since I got pregnant. I want it as long as possible this summer so I can just pull it back and be done with it :-)

  • With both my previous kids, I got my haircut to a chin-length bob about a month before they were born, because I just couldn't stand my fat face with long hair. For some reason, I felt better with it short. I don't know if I'll do it again this time or not, but it did give me motivation to actually dry my hair every day before I went out. I would be worried that if I could just stick it up in a ponytail, I might never do my hair with a newborn, but that could be considered a bonus, too!

I posted this in the random thread yesterday or earlier this week, but I'll give my two cents again. Unless you are bald, the child is going to pull your hair no matter what length the hair. For that reason, no I will not do it.

  • I might cut it shoulder length but I decided months ago that Im just not ready to go super short. I also plan on dying it back closest to its natural color in the next few weeks. I don't want to keep touching up my roots while I have the baby and I need to keep up my appearance for work.
  • I will probably cut mine a couple inches shorter than I normally would for going into summer at my next appointment, but it will still be long. I see babies grab any length of hair unless it's super short, so I don't see why I would sacrifice how I feel my hair looks best for that.

  • I did last time and regretted it. I will keep it long as it is lower maintenance for me at my current length.

  • My hair is about shoulder length right now. But i really do need to something with it soon.

I haven't decided if i'm going to cut it shorter or not. Long hair seems easier to deal with but i hate having long hair. I will probably have my sis cut a couple inches off it and add in some bangs or something in the near future. Maybe i'll talk to her and see if she has any ideas of a hairstyle that would work. (she's a cosmetologist and basically cuts my hair for the price of Starbucks, lol)

  • I'm not cutting my hair for baby - it's way easier to deal with longer! But, I am training it to go longer between washes. My hair girl says you should only wash your hair 2 times a week to keep it healthy. But, when you wash it more often, you force it to produce more oil, which makes it icky to not wash.

A couple years ago I went to every other day washing. But now that I'm pregnant, sleeping is so much more inviting than waking up earlier to wash and dry my super thick hair. I've been skipping 2-3 days in recent months.

I was supposed to wash today, but woke up super itchy around 3 and finally downed some Benedryl at 4 am. It was all I could do to drag my ass outta bed at 6:30 today, which left no time for washing. Luckily, it's still ok and I didn't even feel the need to do a pony tail.
  • I cut mine last week into a bob. I donated 12 inches :) just wanted a change and it was long enough to donate

  • No I'm not cutting my hair. Longer straight hair is much easier for me to style & work with than short hair. Short hair is too much work IMO.

  • I will definitely cut some off, but keep enough to pull it back. I don't need an extra 6-8 inches of hair when it all starts shedding after the baby comes!
  • I've got boob-length, wavy hair this time around, it makes for awesome hippie hairdos and it looks like it's supposed to be messy when I wash it and just leave it. I'm not about to cut it when it's fine as it is. I can braid it, bun, clip, pony-tail or leave it down how it is now.

I had sightly shorter hair last time and never had an issue and had a really short pixie-crop at one point which was minimal fuss. Gel, comb and go.

It's only really an issue when it's just too short to tie up - that's when it's long enough to be in the way but not long enough to do anything about and still look decent.

As for shedding, I shed like a cat in a heatwave anyway so it makes no difference to my life how long my hair is, I'm still going to find it all over the place whether it's long or short.
  • I love my mane, as crazy as it is. It's very lengthy and I have thought about cutting it, but not because of baby, more because I need a change. But I likely will not because I turn into a sad sack when I cut it because it's weird when I shower without my mane, but it's also a little riveting when I use less shampoo. It's an overwhelming cocktail of emotions.

I have an appointment booked for a minimal trim near the end of June and that's it for me.  I did the same when I had DD, got a trim about 2 weeks before my EDD.  But I am in the curly hair group so there's no way I would go short!

  • I tend to change up long vs. short hair every few years (it grows really fast). Right now it's long and I've been thinking of cutting it some time after LO gets here. My curly hair is actually easier to deal with when short. If I do cut it it's more because I'm ready for a change then for the baby. If not I see a lot of messy buns in my future.

  • I usually keep my hair pixie short and love it! I only have it long now because dh asked me to grow it. I hate it.  Im cutting it short short short after this baby pops out.

  • My hair looks best at juuust above shoulder-length, but I'm growing it out now to be easily ponytailed.   Super short hair is a pain in the ass.

  • For me, short hair looks more polished when air dried and ignored than my long hair does. With Pip my hair was almost to my butt and I found most days it was in a pony tail. I'll probably keep it short (jaw bone length) for this one because I feel like it's more styled and I look more put together.

  • My long, curly here is extremely easy to style. I just wash it, put it in a towel for a little while, put product in it and scrunch. And I only wash it three times a week max. I look incredibly stupid with short hair.

  • I cut my very long hair this week. It's a nice change, and by the time baby comes, it will be manageable enough.

  • I said I would, but then kept it long through the winter- pony tail was easier, plus I like the warmth of hair for going outside. I've since cut it short, because I want to, not for ease of style. It's harder to deal with I HAVE to do it to leave the house, it's not easier.
    imageimage"">

  • I wouldn't have just because I had a baby, but 3 months post-delivery I had major shedding. My hair got pretty thin and I hated it. So a few months later I went super short to start over with full thickness. I hope it doesn't shed like that this time :/ ...... I just got it back to a length that looks decent when it's curly and in a ponytail. So I don't plan on cutting this time.

  • My natural curly/frizzy hair is high maintenance when it's short. I found that out the hard way when I cut my lower back length to an A line. I highly recommend Brazilian Blowouts for anyone who has frizzy hair instead of cutting it. I wash my hair 2 times a week and it drys straight and without frizz. Brazilian Blowouts are pricy but I save TIME and money for about 6 months before I need a new one.
