How many words?

So im just curious how many words these "toddlers" who are really talkative are saying lately. Some days we say lots of words and it seems like she gets a new word every few days. Some days she is quietier and seems more observant. Jacey says Mama, Dada, Gaga (my mom), nana, tried to say Brandon my nephew, baby, mine, no, stop, a bite, dog, bubba the dog, hey RawRaw our dog is Rome, turtle, cat, out, car, bath, bye bye, hey. Im sure im missing some but she seems to have a large vocabulary for her age. Oh and bubbles and pappy her pacifier. So what are your babies saying lately?

Re: How many words?

  • Dada, hi, nana, mama, pappy, bubbles, shell, ball, dog, a few sounds like woof woof, choo-choo (comes out "doo-doo", lol), and ah-ah-ah (monkey). Has said bye-bye once. I think she says "there" sometimes, and she says yeah, no, nope, and wow.

  • Momma, Daddee, Blaze (IL's dog), doggy, hi, bye, no, nawww, baba (bottle), keys, yes and yeah, bubbles (mostly thanks to the Bubble Guppies), shoooe, book, go, up, ball, out, Deb (his d/c lady), nigh nigh....I feel like there is more...

He hasn't said Grandma or Grandpa or any variation of that yet which is surprising.

  • Mommy, Daddy, Ada [our dog], yaya [it means nanny in Tagalog] no, dog, cat, hi, bye, cracker, banana, ball, book, shoe, ut-oh, thank you, some animal noises and a lot of her friends' names Abby, Ava, Ezra [sounds more like eh-wa] Ben and Ta-Ta [NN for Tabitha] I feel like there are a few I'm missing.

She also has "fake words" she always says da for up, just started saying something like do for down, oh-ge means water? I have no idea where she got oh-ge but she says it every time she wants to drink.

She "chats" all the time. Her friend Tabitha is 2 weeks older than her and she is, no joke, playing around with putting together sentences. The other day she said "I want water" "I want banana" "I see bear." I think my nephew on the other hand [1 day younger than Tabitha] barely has any words. There is a huge baby gap at this age!

My DD only says about 6 or 7 words consistently, but we had our 15 month old check up yesterday, and the pedi was actually impressed with her development. He went through the 18 month check list with us and said she is already starting to develop many of those skills. He said he likes to see 2 to 4 'words' at 15 months. He said to expect a language explosion soon. I try not to compare too much. DD is definitely a climber, too. It's pretty scary!

DD is a crazy climber. DH turned around and she was on her rocking chair flinging herself back and forth to get it to rock. He wasn't paying attention and said he heard it hitting the wall and thought she was just pushing it and when he turned to tell her to stop he was surprised!

She has this little baby doll stroller and she is always finding new and inventive ways to climb on top of it. Kids are crazy.
  • M knows a lot of words.  She knows what the cow, sheep, owl, dog, cat, and duck say.  She knows cat, dog, owl, bear, and duck.  Bottle, baby, bye, ball, bat, book, mouth, hat, banana, apple, pear, hi, that, ut-oh (every 5 seconds), ow, no, yeah, hot, milk, mom, dad, peppa pig, mum-mum (the cracker).  She sings "backpack backpack" from Dora the Explorer.  She can laugh like Ernie and the Count.  I think she says "I'm done" and "I want that."

  • Mom or Becca (me) daddy, pop pop, japer ( our dog jasper) hi, bye bye, booboo ( nurse), hat, brush teeth, brush hair, no, this, that, beep beep, car, tractor, tree, book, brr cold, hot... He try's to repeat lots of words. He signs "more" the time when he wants more food or more stories. He signs "milk" and "all done" also. He nods his head "no" when you ask him if he wants more and he's full. Or any thing you want him to do and he doesn't want too. Lol....typing all this makes me realize how much he does say!! I never sat and really thought about it :) oh and lately he walks around with his shirt up and says "tickle tickle tickle" real fast! It's hilarious!

  • I for got to add uh-oh, he purposely drops things to say it. He also makes a lot of animal sounds and motor sounds. He hasn't said many names of animals yet but we know which animal he's talking about or pointing to he loves making their sounds!

  • DD has a set of maybe 15 consistent words, quite a few made-up words (like @thisdecaflife noted), and many words she has said once or twice that haven't quite become permanent additions to her vocabulary.  Many times DH and I will look at each other and say "did she just say what I think she said"...and then we'll never hear it again!

One thing I noticed...DD almost never adds the final consonant onto words...so it's sometimes hard to guess what she is saying unless she is pointing to the object.  "Dog" is da, "Cow" is ca (or "moo"), "Duck" is du, "Quack" is qua, etc.

The latest consistent addition to her vocabulary is "Babbo" - meaning our cat Baxter.  It's the only animal (of 4) that she says by name.

  • Hmmmmm, ill make a list...

    Mama, mommy
    Dada, daddy
    Papa (for grandpa)
    Hi
    Bye bye
    Night night
    Down
    Draw
    Doll
    Baby, babies
    Book
    Eyes
    Feet
    This
    That
    Clock
    Doggy
    Bow wow
    Neigh neigh
    Cluck cluck
    Hat
    Up
    No no
    Dots
    ...
I can't think of any more off the top of my head except that she has a weird she consistently uses for the stroller but it sounds NOTHING like stroller so I feel like that can't count. :-)

  • She says these words: Hey, momma, dada, nana, this, that, what, bye, cats, fish, dog, up, ball, bubba, baby, YaYa, Go, Yes, outside, shoes, see, duck and thank you.

She signs: Milk, more, all done, please, and eat.

When she sees these animals she makes these noises: Sheep (baa), dog (woof woof), dinosaur (rawr), duck (quack), horse (naaa) and monkey (uh ah ah).

  • DS only says a few words consistently - mama, bye-bye, choo-choo, bird, car, uh-oh...I think that's it. I think his favorite is bye-bye. Today he told the DC teacher bye-bye at least 5 times while I was gathering his stuff. When he watches me getting our bags together in the mornings, he starts saying bye-bye. He will also repeat other words. We were looking at an animal book one day and he said dog, cow, and something close to duck.

DD says quite a few words. We recently counted somewhere around 50 that we could think of. However, she usually cycles through about 10-15 words at a time that she really actively says, and the others get forgotten about for a little while unless prompted. Her current favorite word is outside ("oussigh").

I've been trying to sign with her since she was 4 months old, but the only signs she does are more, all done, and sleep.

I'm right with you. He was an early walker and crawler and I feel like I'm always pulling him down from everywhere. And man can he run fast. I barely keep up with him sometimes. Hope his vocabulary catches up with him soon.

  • DS only says a handful of words although he knows a lot more than he says. Here are his spoken words:

    This
    That
    Truck
    Dog
    Light
    Hi?

I'm desperately trying to get him to sign "more" ( I say "more please") but he is intent on pointing and whining at food right now. So frustrating.

DS only says mama, dada, and no consistently. In fact he answers no for every question, no matter what. It's kind of cute. He knows several animal sounds and will repeat words. He also says thank you and buh-bye occasionally when prompted.

He babbles a lot and uses gestures. Words just haven't been a priority for him yet.

  • He says daddy, E-vi = Levi, yeah, hi and strawberry on a daily bases. He also can say dog, Dezzy (my youngest sister), mama, bye, light, tree, and spoon. He has more that he tries to say too but it's not consistent. He understands a lot though. I can tell him to bring me Levi's blanket or go get a book and he will do it, well when he wants too. He's also been responding lately. I'll ask him if he wants to eat or wants his milk and he'll respond with the cutest little "yeah".

He's also been nodding his head lately. So far we only have yes. No has yet to come. :)

  • Cute new things:  she will ask to wear a bow--she brings a bow and says "bow."  She does not choose matching options tho.  She will answer if I say, "do you want more pear or puffs" she will say "more pear" or "puffs."  She says "yuck."  Her new favorite thing is to vault off the arm of the couch.  We need some indoor play equipment.  It's still cold here.

  • Kinsley uses a combination of words and signs but seems to have new words each day.

mama, dada, brubru (brother), more, all done, peas, bananas, cheese, cup, eat, kitty, chicken, treat, outside, bubbles, throw, switch, book, hat, coat, shoes, car, please, mine, yeah

that's the ones I can think of quickly.
  • I have to share my dd's words since I am SO proud of her and how far she has come! She is actually deaf and has been since birth, though it wasn't detected until she was 9 months old since she would startle and respond to loud sounds. She received hearing aids at 10 months old and then a cochlear implant just two months ago. In just that short time, here are her words: more, 'ah ah' for dada, 'ah ee', for her brother Andy, flower, 'meow meow' for cat, 'neigh neigh' for horse, moo for cow, quack quack for duck, mil for milk, mmm for any food, uh oh, 'alll' for ball, woo woo for dog, 'oo oo' for train, and several others that she gets the vowels and syllables on. She is also now babbling so many consonants which she never did before : ) So incredible to me and I am just so proud and grateful.

For the pp who needs the evaluation, my son who is now 3 and highly verbal (with no hearing loss) didn't have more than 1-2 word approximations until closer to 17 months, and then after 18 months it exploded. He does have other delays that he's pretty much caught up on, so I think that contributed to it. Early intervention, if needed, is amazing and does wonders.

  • @shanie33‌ good for you for doing the early intervention evaluation. Im sure hes probably just working on other skills right now. Definitely keep us updated on how the eval goes. Ill keep y'all in my thoughts and prayers.

Mine says nothing.  He says mama and dada but to no one specifically, he just babbles it.  He may or may not have a sound for hi, but sounds nothing like the word hi.  He just makes it when he waves.  We are actually having an evaluation with early intervention in June.  Your lists make me sad :(
We're in the same boat. This thread makes me incredibly sad. My mom tries to make excuses for him like "He's just focused on his physical development" or "We all just talk for him, so he doesn't really have to talk", but he's getting too old for no words to be any kind of normal at this point. We were already worried because of his stroke so this just makes all of the concerns so much more real. :(
