2nd Trimester

Sorry if TMI! Advice requested--possible UTI? or just urgency?

I am a few days from 18 weeks.  Last couple of days I have had to go to the bathroom EVEN MORE than normal, sometimes every 30 minutes or so when I'm working and drinking water at my desk.  Now, I have been increasing my liquids intake by a great deal the last week or so, as I live in Texas where the heat has already begun!  But the issue is that when I have to pee, the last couple of days I have noticed that my bladder/pelvic area also feels very full and urgent in a way that is not normal.  No pain while peeing, no itching or major other symptoms.  Just pressure, urgency, and maybe a tad increase in discharge.

Anyone been in this boat?  Just curious.  My husband suggested, hey, maybe urgency is just something that develops normally during 2nd trimester.  But I am feeling it's more than that.

Have a call into my doctor's nurses line, but wanted to get some anecdotal advice as well; I am just trying to decide how urgent of a matter this is?

Thoughts??

Thanks!!

  • Well, the NP told me to come straight in for a culture and urine sample, so I guess there's a good answer for my question and if anyone else is experiencing this!  Apparently any signs of a UTI should be looked at ASAP.

I had this start about 17w4d. I was convinced it was a UTI because I have had them a lot before I was pregnant and know the symptoms. Went to the doctor and it wasn't a UTI, just baby must be growing and pressing on my bladder more.

That being said, UTIs aren't good because they can spread to your kidneys and create bigger problems. If it is a UTI it probably isn't that bad yet (if you don't have other symptoms) but it's always a good idea to get it checked out. As soon as I suspect a UTI (pregnant or not) I go to the doctor or urgent care place the same day because they can diagnose it right away and then prescribe antibiotics. Also, if it is a UTI, the sooner you get the antibiotics, the sooner you'll feel better :)

So, long story short, my advice is to try to get in to see your doctor as soon as you can, but this isn't an ER-type urgent situation.

ETA: ugh, I didn't even read your reply before I posted! Glad you're going to get it checked out. Always better safe than sorry :)
  • Thank you so much for the reply!!  You were right on target with what my doc's office said this afternoon.  Much better safe than sorry, a UTI can be bad news during pregnancy.

  • Go get screened for a UTI.
