six week ultrasound and... not much to see

Hi ladies!  Because I was on my first round of Clomid the cycle I got pregnant, my OB did an ultrasound yesterday.  There was a gestational sac, a yolk sac, but no fetal pole or anything else.  They said it was nothing to be concerned about and that this is all they expect to see at this stage (measured exactly six weeks, which makes sense because I ovulated a little later than usual) and they scheduled another scan for two weeks from now to get a good date and to check things out.  But when I googled six week ultrasounds, there were lots of pictures with fetal poles and even heartbeats!  Are those just further along into the sixth week?  Has anyone here had a six week scan with nothing but the gestational sac and yolk sac?

Re: six week ultrasound and... not much to see

  • Try not to worry. My last baby measured 5-6 days behind and everything was fine. There is so much variability in those early ultrasounds...even a few hours can make a difference between seeing or not seeing something. (((Hugs)))

  • EVERY pregnancy and every baby is different, so the information you see on 6 week ultrasound photos, will ALL be different.  Like PP said, this early in the game, a few hours could make a difference.  Or even the tech or quality of a machine can make a difference  I will say, a yolk sack is a very good sign…  hang in there!

  • I had an ultrasound at 5 weeks 5 days yesterday and we just saw a yolk, no pole, no heartbeat. My doctor was pleased with that and said that sometimes the sack even appears empty this early. I wouldn't worry too much. It's very, very early, and I bet you'll see a lot more in two weeks.

  • Oh no I would hate that! (My first appt is next week and it couldn't get here any slower!!!) Keep positive thoughts! If your dr didn't seem concerned then don't stress yourself. God bless u.
  • Thanks, ladies.  This is helping.  The ultrasound tech (30 years on the job - we had a nice chat) said it was exactly what she expected to see and the doctor said the same thing.  I'm just... nervous.  The ultrasound wasn't for heartbeat or anything, it was to see if there was any evidence of multiples, so at least we know there's only one.  ;)

But I'm going to be nervous until May 12, I'm afraid.  (it's really three weeks away because their ultrasound team was SO busy, but maybe that's a good sign that he didn't tell them to schedule me sooner no matter what?)

  • I'm sorry you are concerned. Like PPs said every baby is different. I'm sure in a couple weeks when you go back there will be a lot more to look at! Hang in there!

  • Honestly try not to worry. My midwife wanted me to wait until at least 7 weeks before I have an ultrasound for this very reason. We scheduled it for tomorrow and she told me it still might be too early. (I have a 7 month old so we are unsure of dating.)
