Gastric Bypass Ladies?!

Specifically, RnY folks... is anybody else having (more) trouble with food now that our darling parasites are starting to worm into our stomach area?  I feel like I just had the surgery with the amount I'm able to eat, and then the pain if I don't chew a million times, etc.  Last night was the worst with 4+ hours of awfulness that the doctor could only attribute to maybe being reflux or an ulcer (I've had no acid problems since surgery).

Am I all alone here in my constant hunger/wanting doughnuts/dumping syndrome hell?  :(

Re: Gastric Bypass Ladies?!

  • @alwaysnc4me, I don't think it was actually reflux (I really have had no problems in over 2 years now), but that pain... it's like, either eating too large of bites, or too dry of food, etc... :(:(  ...except it lasted for 4+ hours.

I know I'm much further out than you, but I think I might go back to shakes... I did eat some in first tri when I kept dumping with "normal" food.

  • Yeah, I'm going to support group in 2 weeks and will chat with him and my NUT.  I haven't been having problems with enough food (I'm gaining and am now almost 2.5 years out from surgery so absorption rates should be almost normal), and I did wait until my surgeon gave the "all clear" for getting pregnant, etc.  I just feel hungry too much, and that pain now makes me slightly scared to eat.  It's no biggie to have a shake once a day or something... and my OB said the ones I had at home were fine (despite some people being anti-soy while pregnant).  :)

I would definitely think your surgeon seeing you so frequently is related to the amount of time post-op.  :(  I also love having the blood draws for all (I assume you did a regular blood draw, no glucose drink for GD test, right?).

    Thanks so much!!  :):)
  • I eat less now and breathing is hard too.

  • Sooo.. Boo.  Woke up at 5:30am to the same pains as the other day (and hadn't eaten since around 10:30pm) so I called my surgeon's office and they told me to come in and spend some quality time with his temp replacement (because I have the most health conscious doctor who actually had heart surgery only on Monday).  Apparently it's not normal pains and they said maybe an ulcer, kidney stones or gall stones.  So I get to try protonix for 2 weeks plus get ultrasounds to hunt down some rocks if they exist.  Hoping for an ulcer.
  • Gee, I hope it is not something serious.  I'm so sorry you are having this pain.  :(

I feel connected to this thread, if you don't mind my joining in, but I'm a little different.  I have the Lap Band.

Eating was not comfortable at all.  I actually have hated food for a long time now.  (I had the surgery five and a half years ago.)  They unfilled the band for me after my 20 week anatomy scan of the baby because it seemed they were on the small side for weight.  At first, I was able to eat quite a bit more when they unfilled it, but now that the baby is taking up more room, I feel like I have more restriction again.  Nutrition shakes have been a daily part of my diet now, and the baby has caught up to where they belong in weight and growth.  I'm speculating that it is going to be more uncomfortable as more internal organs get pushed upward by the baby.

I hope you will update us on what the scans show might be going on.  You have my thoughts and prayers that you get some relief soon.  Take care.

  • I think I am going to get some premade shakes to carry in my hospital bag. Giving birth cost so much energy and last time I was able to eat a full meal but doubt it will be possible this time around.

  • So far, it seems like the protonix are doing the trick!!  I've gone all weekend without it happening!! :)  Maybe I am lucky enough to have it be an ulcer!!  I still need to schedule the ultrasounds just to make sure though considering they think I "may have" had a kidney stone pass already during this pregnancy.

@SweetTamale38, The more, the merrier.  :)  I definitely am still trying to figure out where the heck my stomach actually *is* at this point since I swear the top of my uterus has crushed all my organs out of the way and sometimes I think it's at the bottom of my ribs?!  Nobody seems to have a serious answer when I ask them where things are going just "that they'll move".  I then am like, "you know that they're not connected, right?!?  What, do they just float around all over the place and nobody worries?!?"

Will they let you drink shakes once you're in labor (or do you mean for after)?  The hospitals I have toured say only "clear liquids" during?
  • Good question. I was induced with my first and this was pre-bypass. I had to come in a 6 am so at 7ish the breakfast buffet lady came and gave us some food. I ate it of course :D  My son was born a little before dinner time so things went quick for us. I think we might have even have been given lunch. But this time around I want to sick the meal thing if it happens again.
From what I read normal labor can take hours or all day so something more than clear liquids might be needed. I have a doctors appointment this week so I'll ask about that.
