Any other Firefighter Wives

2 kiddos, 3rd on the way.  DH and I have been together for 7 years, so have been living the Firefighter life, and honestly get it, love it, hate it, you know the cycle. Station becomes family, miss him at the holidays, but over all we are use to the life. Recently DH started on a new PT small department, he is loving it, and the department and buddies at new station are in heat of training season, practice burns.  He has asked that I come hang out and watch....Not sure what I think. I know what my husband does, worry, but also keep faith in his skills and know we take risk walking out the door every day. For some reason, the idea of watching him "work", even as a practice makes me anxious. Love my husband, love what he does, amazed with his strength and abilities, will talk about his day, but this is the first time he has ever really asked for me to come out. Thoughts? Is this typical? Would you want to watch, even knowing it is "practice".
Normally it might be interesting and a nice way to support him, but I think my stomach turned when he asked. I have expressed my feelings a little.

  • My husband is a police officer so kind of similar. I would go. He asked you, which means he wants you there. Maybe seeing what he does will actually reassure you that he is good at what he does and knows how to stay safe.

  • Hey! I'm a fireman's wife. We both have dangerous jobs, so I only worry when I've heard about a big fire in the city, or if I can't get a hold of him in a reasonable amount of time. Watching him practice wouldn't bother me, but I'd be worried about what they're burning, and inhaling it while pregnant. I don't know the stats, but many, many fireman for from different cancers, often attributed to what they've been inhaling and exposed to. (For example, if they're burning an old car, you should probably steer clear.) Good luck!
Looking forward to meeting our first child in January 2015!

  • Hey ladies, thank you for being honest. I am not sure, but I think the pregnancy just has me over thinking everything. It is funny, normally I am the wife of the group encouraging other wives & girlfriends to not stress, that this job is something in their blood not just a job for them. I know at least if my husband was not working as a FF or EMT, he would be loss and they are all well trained. Departments have two coming up, Burn Building & an Old House.

When I mentioned it to a few other FF wives they all hit their normal "oh so dangerous", "how could you watch"...but they are also the ones who think I am crazy to let my DH on motorcycle. So I will be going..at a distance of course.
And you are right about cancer rates...we always keep uniforms/gear at a distance from kids & I, unfortunately it is his daily reality to be in his carcinogen covered gear.

  • DH is an officer... I'm a dispatcher for the same department, and my dad is a retired Sgt for a nearby dept. I feel your pain.

The thing with public safety is that we are family. Holidays, parties, breakfasts, etc....we do it together and we tend to feel alienated by society because Joe Schmoes do not understand our humor, our lifestyle, our schedules, etc. You need to go, even if for a little while. Get to know his brothers and sisters. If he needs anything, you will be glad to know who has his back.
  • It is true, when my husband and I first met, it was amazing to me that they all were there for each other for anything, just like that...And it is true humor is something you have to understand, I honestly forget until we around non-service that life is any different. I am hoping to get to know them more, outside of just stories. I will go and thanks for the push!

  • My husband is a career firefighter and I am a police officer. When we first met, though, we were volunteer firefighters together. When he leaves for work it helps me that I know what it's like in a fire and I feel confident in my hubby and his skills and training. I think watching a burn might help you feel the same way. Its also important to get to know the people he's working with, you have to trust them as much as your hubby. I know hubby tells me that he likes knowing the guys i work with. We're single unit cards so when shit goes down I have to trust that my backup is coming quick.

  • I'm actually the firefighter in the family! I work 48 hours on and 72 off- DH gets to have all the fun while I'm at work. This is our first so we have no clue! I'm also the only female at work and the first pregnant one. I know my guys have my back and hubby wouldn't expect any less.
  • Wife of a firefighter! I totally understand being more anxious while pregnant, especially about watching him work. We live outside Boston and my hubby was at two firefighter funerals this spring. One of the guys had 3 kids under 10. That really made everything super real for both of us. We made a will, picked a guardian for our daughter (& eventually #2) and got everything in order. I don't think I could watch DH work right now. It would make me think about too many "what if" scenarios when he is at work. Good luck on whatever you choose!!

I have two other kiddos, but this one has me more nervous than the others. And we are blessed that he always works with a great group.
