Stay at Home Moms

What would you have done?

So I took L to a storytime/craft time at the library. This was our first time. After the activities were over, all the kids were running around, looking at books, playing with stuffed animals, etc. L, his friend and another little boy were chasing each other. There was a big glass display case that was empty and sitting in an alcove of the kids area. At some point, almost all of the kids had gone over to it and started banging on the glass. Every time the parents would redirect them and try to keep them away. Eventually L and another little boy went over and stood behind it and started banging on it. Both me and the other boys Mom immediately started getting them out and redirecting them. As we were both in the middle of correcting their behavior one of the librarians came over and said, "it might be time for them to have outside time. It's getting kind of loud." We both just said ok and continued redirecting our kids. I took L and kept looking for books to check out and then we left. Would you have complained to the library staff? I just feel like that display case should not be in the kids department in the first place, and it was obvious we were dealing with their behaviors, was it really necessary to tell us to leave?

  • I think the librarian had every right to say that it was time to leave.  Storytime was over and it sounds like the kids were being a bit too rambunctious in that area.  They may be using that display case for something special and small children should not be left to run around and bang on glass displays.  After you redirected him the first time you should have realized that it was just too tempting of an item and should of either gone to another part of the library or left.

  • I would have taken them outside and called it a day.
  • They may have been waiting to fill the display case.  I wouldn't take it personally.  You just happened to be the person who was "caught"

He wasn't left to run around it. He darted over to it again after he saw another little kid back there. And I was right behind him. He literally was back there for like 30 seconds. My biggest issue was that I was in the middle of handling his behavior and the librarian jumped in the middle of that. And, just because storytime was over doesn't mean we had to leave, IMO. DH is a librarian and even he thought it was handled poorly.

  • Also to be clear, I'm not saying it was fine for him to be touching glass or shouting. That being said, after story time was over, all the kids were running around in the kids area, some would stop and look at books, or play with some of the stuffed toys, but all the kids were being noisier than your typical library. Also this was for kids ages 0-5. I don't think they should expect a bunch of kids in that age group to be silent in the library. We will keep going and keep working on appropriate behavior in the library. He's 2.5, he's still learning.

Your child got blamed for all the other kids before him. It's not the end of the world.
You're right, it's not! Letting it go!

  • I think when running in circles and chasing starts happening, it's time to leave the library.  But I also don't think the librarian meant to single you out, maybe she was getting complaints from people in other sections.  Don't take it personally.

If it makes you feel any better, I was yelled at by a security guard at the Honey Baked Ham Store a couple years ago. He thought I was one of the people that came in through the exit.

"Now you have to go to the end of the line and wait!"
Old lady in front of me that did go through the exit kept quiet.
    Like wtf?!
"I came in through the entrance! I am not moving!"
"Oh, you are getting snippy with me now?!"

Haha. That was an interesting experience *shakes head*

Why was there even a security guard at the Honey Baked Ham? Was it like Black Friday for meat? Black Forest ham Friday?
I can not remember if it was for Easter or Christmas dinner, but my mom had me go pick it up. There was a huge line and they had some sort of system going on. It was crazy.

  • I would be annoyed, mostly because I was embarrassed for being singled out for my kid's behavior, but I definitely wouldn't complain. It's tough to keep them in line in the rest of the library after story time at that age. I stopped taking him for about six months when I was pregnant and too slow and exhausted to keep him from yanking all the books off the shelves and running around.
