Spelling Vivienne

I guess I always assumed it was spelled Vivienne, but SS site says Vivian is the popular spelling. BTN seems to indicate that Vivian is the original spelling and it's unisex.

To me, Vivienne is pronounced differently than Vivian. Vivie-EN vs VIVie-Ahn.

  • Yes originally Vivian was male but that is like roman times. It has been a female name (via unisex) for a long time now. One of those names that has been around for so long you will find it is both

    I also like Vivien.
I think I prefer the way Vivian is said

  • I know they are pronounced differently, but for the life of me I can't get them to sound different (when I say them out loud).

This. Completely. Like I get how they should be pronounced differently, but it takes a lot of effort for me to do it/hear it. I'm currently sitting here saying both over and over trying to pronounce each correctly.

  • Hmm.  I guess this is where living in the boonies is getting me in trouble.  I've never heard this name pronounced in a way other than VIVI-ehn.  Similarly with LILI-ehn...regardless of the spelling.
  • I agree it depends on how you want to pronounce it.
I knew one male Vivian once. He was from South Africa; he's around 50 now. So it's not completely dead yet as a unisex name.
I like the look of Vivienne better but prefer the sound of Vivian. If it were me, I'd probably go with Vivian but they're both lovely.

  • I prefer Vivian as a first name and Vivienne as a middle name because of the emphasis on different syllables.

For example, I would use Vivian if I wanted to name my daughter Vivian Margaret, due the emphasis on Viv-, but I would use Margaret Vivienne because of the emphasis on -enne.

I'm only bringing this up because it's something to consider when decided which name (spelling/pronunication) to use.  You have to think about how you plan on saying it and how you want it to sound to others.
