At approximately 4:30 in the morning yesterday, which happened to be my 31st birthday, I woke up from the best sleep I've had in weeks to a pretty intense contraction. By 6:00, they were about 7-10 minutes apart and I knew I had to call the midwives. I took a shower and tried to dealt with mostly by being on my hands and knees. By 7:30, they were about 4 minutes apart and I was struggling and yelling through them and kind of beginning to panic. It just felt like it was escalating so quickly and I knew labor could take 24 hours and there was no way I was going to last that long. Plus, my stepson hadn't arrived yet to take care of DS, so DH was having to leave me pretty frequently and I was basically alone in my bathroom through some hard contractions. Luckily, the apprentice midwife (who DH and I just love) arrived shortly after 8 am, and so did my stepson. I felt instantly more at peace and ready to go. She was pretty surprised at how far along I was, 9 cm dilated and baby was way descended. Now the contractions were super intense, but I felt much more capable with Pauline there. I got on the on my knees with my elbows propped up on a bunch of pillows and just breathed through them as best as I could. The urge to push came pretty quickly. It didn't even dawn in me that neither of the two senior midwives had arrived yet until one walked in at 10! She took one look at me and told me to flip around and sit/squat at the end of the bed. Baby girl was born 2 pushes later. And what a little beast! 9lbs, 9oz, 22 inches long! The other senior midwife arrived around 10:30. Yup, my babe was born so quickly, she didn't even make it in time! I needed three stitches and honestly, that was the worst pain of the whole experience. The numbing agents didn't work on me at all and having needles stuck in your already beat up vagina sucks. All in all though, I can't say enough about how much I loved my home birth. I felt capable, strong, supported and safe and I really believe that's why everything progressed so quickly. And I'm so glad I didn't have to spend my birthday in the hospital!
