Leg cramps????????

For the past few days I have been having really bad lower leg cramps during the day and so bad at night they wake me up from my sleep. Just wondering if there is anything I can do to help with them? I go to the doctors later in the week but really need some help to see if there is something I can do. I do plan on asking my doctors just was not sure if u lady's where having any problems. Sorry if this is a repeat post I did not see anything when I looked back.

  • I think hydrating and stretching are the best bets. Elevating can't hurt, either, and neither can asking DH for a little massage ;)

  • Agree with everyone else. I do a lot of what @katekat8721‌ and @lest12‌ said to try to prevent them but I still get them a lot. (This pregnancy and my first too.) Like @CDK211‌ said if they wake me up I immediately stretch my toes to my knees as far as I can and that usually fixes it.

They definitely suck, I'm right there with you.

  • I found upping my water really helped.

  • Agree with pp. Up your water intake and eat bananas! It helps mine!
    Pregnancy Ticker
  • I had them really badly with my first pregnancy. I'd jump out of bed in pain and freak DH out. Then once I realized that they usually happened if I was pointing my foot too far, and that flexing it/stretching my toes toward my knees (like PPs have mentioned) immediately stopped it, I haven't experienced them that badly in my two most recent pregnancies. I can usually tell when one is coming on now and stretch it out.

I got a bad charlie horse in my right leg Monday morning after exhausting myself on Easter..it is still so sore to the point I can barely walk on it and gimp around all day.
I am totally okay with cutting it off and selling it at this point.. It is useless to me other than causing me a lot of pain.
  • Thanks for the help,I drink about 72 ounces of water a day but I can try to drink more. I will also try to doing some leg stretches.
  • Also watch your salt intake. On days I eat really well the cramps aren't usually a problem. However, after eating fried chicken or ramen or something super salty I can guarantee cramps later in the night. Also, try to keep your feet flexed (sticking your heel out) when you're sitting and right before you go to sleep.

You have gotten some good advice so I am just going to add: one question mark is plenty to let someone know that the sentence is meant as a question. That is all.
@flerlgirl - what are you talking about!?!!?!?!?!? Have you never heard of emphasizing an emotion, you brute! Clearly these leg cramps are extremely questionable.

     Gotta tease OP, sorry :).

@hlp2709 - I have been struggling with preterm labor so maybe I'm supposed to drink more, but my dr told me 100 oz! It seems like an insane amount, but help helps with contractions...maybe it'll help with leg cramps, too?

I am going to try and drink more but I feel how can we drink that much water in a day.
  • Increased fluids and a cup of Gatorade at bedtime. Works like a charm for me. I can't stand pickles or bananas but I have been told they help.
  • Take this with a grain of salt because it's not pregnancy related, but my H sleeps in compression socks after his bike rides and he says it helps with cramping and he generally sleeps better all around.  I just bought some because my feet are starting to swell a little when I've been on them for a while, but they aren't here yet, so I can't say from experience yet if they help.

Um... that link was awesome! I thought you just typed that to be funny, but my curiosity got the best of me.  I'm glad it did.
Lol I thought and did the same thing. I need to bookmark the page ;)

  • Oranges, orange juice, leafy greens, and potatoes are also great sources of potassium.
I find that as long as I drink one glass of OJ and eat one banana per day, I'm usually pretty good.
a friend of mine recommended stretching every night before bed (hamstring leg extensions), and I think the combo of upped potassium and loosening the muscles has helped prevent them more than anything. people have also suggested upping magnesium as well, though I haven't focused on that.

oh, and I've never found stretching it when it happens to help whatsoever - last time I did that with a calf charlie horse, I also got a charlie horse in my thigh (yes, AT THE SAME TIME DANGIT). so you'll just have to find what works for you ;)

  • This has been happening to me at night recently.  Unfortunately, I don't think there's too much you can do other than drink lots of water and maybe eat a banana or two.

  • @hlp2709‌ after weeks of the same thing yesterday I finally asked my doctor if she knew of anything that might help. She told me to get hylands leg cramp ointment, she said it's totally safe for pregnant women. Last night was the first night I used it and I didn't have one cramp all night!

  • Magnesium helps! It's a natural muscle relaxer - I take a cal/mag supplement . Also yoga - keeps the blood flowing
