Short version: Aiden John was born at 7:18pm on Thursday, April 10 via C-section after 13 hours of labor - 5 lb 10 oz and 18.5 in long.
Long version: I woke up Thursday morning to my 5:15 alarm clock, and started getting ready for work. I woke up feeling like my pelvis, hips and lower back had been hit by a mack truck, but otherwise I felt the same as every other day recently. At around 6am I felt a crampy pain that I first thought was gas pain, but realied was a contraction when I couldn't just fart the pain away... I told my DH that I thought I was potentially having contractions, and that he should keep his phone handy while he was at work. Since I wasn't really bothered by the one or two contractions I'd had while getting ready for work, I decided to go in to the office and work until I couldn't any more, or until the contractions stopped (I was still in denial at this point).
By a little before 10 am I realized that my contractions weren't going away and getting any less strong, so I figured I should probably start timing them to see where things were going. At this point they were already about five to six minutes apart, and I was timing them on my phone through my weekly staff meeting, where I was referred to as a ticking time bomb since I was due the next day (oh, if they only knew!). Things continued to progress through lunch, and I ended up having to bump a few late afternoon meetings to earlier in the day, since I was having trouble just sitting through the contractions at this point, and I knew that I really needed to wrap things up and go home. I finally left my office at 3:30 with contractions about three to four minutes apart and very strong.
DH and I met up at our house at 4:00, and drove to the hospital, arriving at around 5:00. I was checked in to L&D, and that's when things got interesting! One of the nurses checked me, and said I was at a 6, but asked if Peanut was head down. I told her as far as I knew he was, and that I had been told he was head down at 36w (based on a cervical check/exam). The nurse indicated Peanut might be head down, but with his elbow by his head, or he was breech, and we'd need a scan to confirm. A few minutes later, the same nurse came back in and asked if another nurse could do a check since she'd never felt a good questionable presentation. I figured why not, so we did another check. At that point, the ultrasound tech came in, barely got the gel and wand on my belly and said "You were planning a on a C-section right?" And with that, all my plans went out the window! Shift change was at 6:00, so I had to wait for the on call OB to arrive (thankfully it was my favorite Dr. from the practice). I was back in the OR by 6:45 pm, and at this point had progressed completely to a 10, so i was ready to go and really just wanted this baby out! Got set up, got the spinal (weirdest feeling ever), DH came in and things got started, and Peanut came out at 7:18pm!
I bawled like a baby when I saw him, and made DH go watch like a hawk since I wasn't able to. I didn't get a chance to really hold him until I got back to recovery, but it was totally worth the wait. A C-section wasn't even on my mind going in, but it really wasn't that bad, and I'd do it again in a heartbeat, especially when the prize is my little Peanut happy and healthy!
And now, pics for those of you who read this ridiculous novel...
