Boy's Names - Finnick, Finn, Peter, Xavier?

Hi all!  Would love some help picking a name for our (possibly) second boy!  Our current son's name is Devon and we have a very Irish sounding last name starting with 'M' and ending with 'key'.

My husband loves the name Finn, but I would like to find a name that could have the nn of Finn.  Someone suggested Finnick, but I realize that's not a "real" name and is a character from a novel.  Is that a bad idea?  I don't really like Finley or Finnegan...

Our back-up to Devon was Logan, but I think that sounds too similar to Devon to use now.  Other possibilities are Peter and Xavier, but we honestly are not in love with anything at this point!  Thanks for any suggestions!!

  • What about Fintan? Wouldn't be a fan of Finnick. Peter is ok, I like Xavier, though it's NMS.
  • I like the suggestion of Griffin nn Finn. Peter is a great choice, very strong name!

::starts running away from board:: I actually like Finnick. I know, I know. Total GP "name." I would never use it, but I have always liked how it sounded in my head after reading the books. And I like Primrose...and Rue! ::hides::

I feel the same way.  In addition to being a name from the Hunger Games I don't like how close it is to finicky. I do like how it sounds though.

Not the same spelling, but Phineas might be another option for the nn Finn.

  • Thanks for the insights and appreciate them still coming!

I think I was excited when someone suggested Finnick because of my husband's love of Finn, goes well with our somewhat comical last name, and doesn't clash with Devon like I worry Finnian would.

Maybe I should just look in a totally other direction!  ;)
  • I love Xavier and Peter.

I like Phineas as a way to get the NN Finn.

  • My DS is Finn by itself so that's obviously my favorite.  I sometimes call him Finnegan but I think Finn by itself is lovely.  I also really Peter.  I liked Finnick in Hunger Games but the whole finicky thing is kind of an issue to me.
  • I like Finn! Finnian was on my list if LO was a boy :)
  • I didn't even know what Finnick was from, but I don't like it because it sounds like "finnicky," an unflattering adjective. I like Finn or Peter.

  • What about Peeta instead of Peter?

;-)  Kidding......I've just always hated that name......it sounds like something Katherine Hepburn would say when being dramatic.

  • I don't really like how the Finn names are everywhere, but it doesn't sound bad. Finnick is neat, but it does sound too close to 'finicky'.

I think Finn goes well with Devon, but if you're going to second guess it and you're not 100% about the other options I'd start from scratch. I love Devon, btw. What about some other Irish names? I like Connall/Connell and Ciaran/Kieran

But, really OP, I wouldn't use it. I would go with Finn on it's own, or Finnegan/Finley.
**SHHHHH** me too. Again, I'd never use it, but I thought it was pleasant-sounding when I read the book.

  • I vote for Finn. But, I do know a Flaherty... I think it's an Irish surname if that doesn't bother you. Something different but has Irish ties. I don't know, just grasping at straws!

  • Not a fan of Finnick, but the others are great.
  • I like Finn. Finnick is NMS. Peter and Xavier don't really float my boat either. I like pps suggestions of Phineas and Griffin.

  • Thanks for all the suggestions everyone!  Got a couple of new ones on the list that I'll share with husband!  Still no straight out winner.

Is it sad that I'm kinda hoping we're having a girl just because we have her name picked out already?  lol!  ;)
