Re: Newbie Play Date (Post your dumb questions here)

  • I have one...
I apparently have an u/s scheduled for Thursday as part of my initial consult with my MFM. I'll be about 11.5wks. Will this be the NT scan or will they have me schedule an additional u/s for the next week? I could just wait & ask my OB Tues (or, you know, find out at the appointment), but that makes too much sense!

Probably separate since they wait for you to tell them which genetic tests you do/do not want before ordering those

  • Are you getting blood taken before the u/s? I know I had to do that last week and my NT isn't for a week and a half. I don't know if it is the same for everyone but I thought that an NT has to have blood taken before it occurs. It sounds like a regular u/s otherwise.

I'm having blood drawn at my OB Tues, but I have no idea about the peri. Blargh, I figured it would be separate since it didn't specifically state otherwise, but c'mon. I mean, while you're all up in there... ya know? Poor planning to have two u/s within a week I think. I won't complain about the extra opportunity though. Who needs a home doppler when doctors don't communicate? :P
  • I guess that is a plus:) @NunyaBennis‌

I was hoping my doctor was on the ball. I have been seeing my family dr since week 5 (now week 11) because here I am suppose to wait for a referral from her to see an ob/gyn. She said at week 5 she was putting in a referral I confirmed she was also doing this at week seven when I went to see her...I called over the past couple days because I was getting worried. 2 days later I have an answer... The answer being she forgot to put in a referral. Yes this pregnant lady yelled at her on the phone. WTF people. It's not like my "condition" can just wait! Did I overreact or is this a normal thing not to see a specialist yet.

We don't get referrals here until 20 weeks. I won't get one until 32 weeks as my family doctor delivers babies but I need a csection so he will refer me. You over reacted a little bit but I completely understand the frustration. Doctors are people too :) I say this not knowing if you are high risk or not. If you are, that changes my answer.

I have my first high risk appointment with MFM on 4/30 at 13 weeks. I was undecided if I wanted the NT scan before, but decided the other day to get it. I called MFM and they were just able to tack it on to my existing appointment on 4/30, so it'll just be the longest appointment ever.

My doctor does not deliver and she said that she refers at 8 weeks if it is high risk and 12 weeks if not because she straight up told me that she doesn't know much more than confirming a pregnancy and prescribing meds. (This scared me) I have yet to be told what a can and cannot eat, she did send me for one u/s but I was measuring a week and a half behind (hoping I just ovulated late) but seriously going crazy here, if it weren't for you ladies I don't know what I would do. Thanks for keeping me sane and answering my dumb questions

  • I have a dumb question!  When does the placenta start developing? And can you see it on the ultrasound?  From other posts I have read (regarding using a home doppler, etc) it seems that the placenta would already be on it's way to being almost fully developed.  I am just wondering because I still saw the yolk sac on my ultrasound at 9.5 weeks and I thought that the placenta "took over the yolk sac".  Maybe I am just confused but I am worried because I haven't seen a placenta on any of my ultrasounds..

An u/s tech told us that some time around 12wks the placenta will be formed and the yolk gobbled up.

    @flutterbuggie

The placenta actually starts to form within a week or two of conception, around week 3. Early on, though, the yolk sac "feeds" the baby. The placenta takes over around week 10, and fully attaches around week 12.

The placenta and umbilical cord can be seen on my 10 week ultrasound.

Here's some good info about it: https://pregnancy.familyeducation.com/first-trimester/9-weeks-7-days.html

I have what I consider to be an amazing doctor and with both my pregnancies they have never once told me what I can't eat. Obviously they always say don't drink, smoke or do drugs. I think in our day and age doctors expect you to be more informed or to ask directly. It is scary, however, that your doctor does so little :/ I'd think about switching when you can. I wouldn't like that attitude either. That was kind of how my last doctor was. He completely missed my elevated liver counts on my blood work he did last time and I ended up needing emergency surgery because he was such a freaking idiot.
  • So, I'm 8.5 weeks and my pants don't fit because of the bloating I guess. Will my stomach get smaller before I start actually showing? Or should I suck it up (cos I can't suck it in) and by a belly band or maternity pants? Also, I'm small (size 0) and heard belly bands don't work well on small people this early. Any one have experience with this?
  • @Mazere‌ this might work better or you. It comes in small and actually buttons to your pants buttons. https://www.bellybuttonband.com

I'm a size 2 & said that I would wear my skinny jeans that I had on when I POAS every-single-day until there was absolutely no more squeezing into them... which lasted another 2wks at best. Sooooo much bloat! I have a couple of pairs of low-rise that still mostly fit and my "fat pants" that were previously worn just for yard work and period weekends, but even those are getting uncomfortable now (11wks) and are begging for the rubber band. Honestly, though, I'm not a fan of the rubber band trick (I feel exposed & get frustrated in the bathroom... and don't get me started on button fly!) so I tried a belly band. Not a fan of that either, apparently- it kept rolling out of place, snagging my shirt, and made me sweat even worse than I already do. I finally said fuck it, be comfy, and bought some full panel jeans (the under-belly are still a bit loose) and a couple flowy shirts. Whether or not they last another 6-7 months I don't really care. I'm comfy now and the jeans will stretch/constrict as needed at least for awhile! Yay stretchy no buttons!

When you orgasm, your body releases oxytocin, which causes your uterus to contract (and later - letdown of your milk). Fun stuff.

Ah yes. Leaking/squirting boobs during sex. I forgot about that... My DH basically didn't get to see my boobs at all while I was breastfeeding unless they were in DDs mouth.

  • I have a dumb question!!! I'm 10 weeks and am really feeling the bloat right now- not many pants are still fitting. While I figure NOW is not the time, when is the time to start slapping and smearing lotion all over your stomach to help with the stretch marks? You STM, when did you start? Also, what brand of lotion did you buy??? Do you think it helped?

Logically, I know stretch mark creams/oils don't do much. But I still use them because I feel better doing *something* rather than nothing. I didn't get stretch marks last time (knock on wood), hoping for the same this time.

I use "Mother's Special Blend" oil after showers. I also have some "Mama Bee Belly Butter" I use sometimes. I've already started slathering myself.

Unfortunately, stretch marks are 100% genetic. Last time I didn't get them on my tummy, but I got them on my vag!

  • I'm going to put this here first of all cuz it's probably a dumb question, I'm a newbie, and I'm hoping for better luck it getting an answer I want as opposed to creating a whole new post.  Conversation never seems to go the way I want on boards I create (not just here, I've always gotten lost in the mix of conversation on board - guess I'm more of a face to face person) and in my current state I'm highly sensitive to actual and/or perceived snark.  Is paranoia a symptom of pregnancy? :)

One of the things I do with my dad, just me and him, is to go fossil hunting.  Quarries will open up parts of the land they aren't working on and let you look to your hearts content.  And you can find some really cool stuff (sharks teeth, other fossils).  You have to wear hard hats and steel toe boots but that is pretty much more for their peace of mind and legality then actual danger.  Though the boots do a good job protecting your feet on the terrain.  There have been kids who do these things who look as young as 7 or 8.  Overall probably the most dangerous thing is the climbing the hills of soil if you are so inclined.

So here is the dumb question: I'm assuming this is fine to do.  Honestly running is more strenuous than walking around looking for fossils on the ground.  I mean I ran a half marathon 4 weeks ago.  I never scale the hills anyway because I'm the kid who can get up the monkey bars just fine and then gets to the top and screams for my mom because I can't get back down.  I haven't told my parents yet because I'm just not ready (I'm not married and they ain't gonna be to thrilled about it).  I go next week to fossil hunt (I'll be 12 weeks).  Just need reassurance that I'm being a worrywart.  That is all from this newbie :).

I've never done anything like that so I can't really speak to the safety aspect. It sounds like you can physically handle it. I would just make sure you bring a lot of water and something to eat.

The Internet is difficult because you can't read tone. People overreact to things that didnt need to be overreacted to all the time. If your worried, maybe ask the poster you are getting a vibe from if they meant to be snarky or not. Lots of the time people just read too much into things.

I think that as long as you keep yourself hydrated and sun safe, you will be just fine to go :)

BAHAHAHA! I love that! You are pushing a baby through your vag so it makes sense that it would change. My feet never did though.
