So what's the verdict on bikinis on toddlers?

This is the first year I need to pick a swimsuit for a girl. DD will be 18ish months during the summer.  I am not looking to put her in a bikini for the cuteness aspect, I like one pieces just as much, but I'm thinking the bikinis would be easier to change a diaper, right?  The one I'm looking at, which I can't seem to PIP, has a skirted bottom and the top is a decent size, not those tiny triangles or anything. Cute or inappropriate?

Oh yeah, Happy Easter!! :)

  • We always get one pieces or rash guards for the coverage. But we will spend a lot of time in bathing suits this summer and DD's skin is fair. I don't really notice/care what other kids are wearing unless they're the horribly inappropriate trying-to-be-sexy ones.

  • I always buy the two-piece bathing suites from Land's End ~ they call them tankinis, I think. They give lots of coverage as well as ease for diaper changing. And they have UV protectant.

  • Z has a tankini and a one piece.  A small bit of her belly sticks out. We spend most days at the beach so a 2 piece is easy to change when it comes to her diaper and rinsing off at the end of the day. I lather her in 60 SPF and she takes sun breaks and sits in the sun shack.

I think bikinis are cute on babies with proper sun care.

It's the middle school/high school girls that buy the swim suit that is a size too small and prance around with their butt crack and boobs hanging out that make me go uhhhhhhhhhh- where's your towel?
  • I like tankini's because it gives you the convenience of 2 pieces(especially to change them out of a swim diaper) and it also gives the full coverage on top(no tummy showing).  Lands End is my go to place for swimsuits for the kids.
  • As long as you marinate them in sunscreen, I think toddler bellies in bikinis are adorable.
  • I am pro two piece for anybody who wears a diaper.
  • We always do two piece with rashguard, for the sun protection factor and I think they are way cuter than bikinis

  • I am a fan of two pieces for diaper and bathroom ease. Or a snap me suit. That's my friends company and it's snap crotch bathing suits. If you check her website Emma and Drew are models this year :)

That is brilliant!! One of those "why didn't I think of that?" things! I may very well be ordering one once I get to look through them, and so cool that your kids got to model them!

  • I don't like two pieces on anyone. I bought DD a swim diaper and a rash guard

  • I personally don't like bikinis on young kids. I do like tankinis and also rash guards with bikini bottoms or board shorts. DD is too long in the torso for most one piece swimsuits to fit correctly so two pieces it is for her. DD's swimsuit this year is a tankini and she can still wear her rash guard from last year so she will mix and match tops depending on where she swims.

  • In general I'm not a fan. Personally we do rash guards and bikini bottoms and have a tank style two piece for indoor pools/swim lessons. DH, DD and I all wear swim tops because then we need to worry less about sun screen.

  • While I don't mind them if they are age appropriate, dd will be wearing a rash guard and bottoms.

  • This summer I am looking for the MOST coverage possible. We will probably go with a long sleeved rash guard and regular bottoms for her.

I seriously wish you can buy toddler bathing suits in the 1940s style :)

  • I'm a bigger fan of 2 piece suits than 1.  My oldest and youngest are tall through the torso and could never wear a one piece (just like me).  We have a plethora of swim suits and they wear what they want.
  • By the way, I've realized it's crazy I've never heard the term rash guard until this post! Almost everybody mentioned it so clearly I am behind the times!

  • I don't like them on little girls. At all; regardless of sun exposure. I do put my boys in rash guards though too because we are white, white, white.  They would fry like little eggs. I like to limit the amount of sunblock I have to use to coat them down too.

Really? They are everywhere here. Boys, girls, men, women, babies. Or did you just not know the term?

  • I buy all kinds of suits for the girls, including bikinis.

We get a few bikinis and then a rash guard for occasions where we will be in the sun a long time though I find the rash guard to be a pita to take off a kid. We go to the y with an indoor pool so no worries about sun exposure there. Otherwise we use common sense--we try to avoid peak sun hours and utilize shade. We live less than ten minutes from the beach and go everyday so outings are usually only 60-90 minutes and we avoid peak sun hours most days.

didn't read anything, but I put a rash guard on G to protect him from the sun, so I can't imagine putting N in something that covers so little. Right now she hads a red and white striped "old timey" bathing suit. its a one piece shorts/short sleeve thing. It is adorable, but changing diapers is a bitch. I will be getting a 2 piece and rash guard next.
@NandaB penguingrrl posted about snapmeswimwear.com, they have one piece suits that snap like a onesie, I might be trying those out for DD this summer.

  • Tankini. 2 pieces. Solves the changing/bathroom factor.

  • Tankini or a rash guard. I am a huge fan of rash guards for the sun protection and it's less body I have to battle to sunscreen. Also, my youngest has vitiligo and it becomes much more noticeable with sun exposure.  So I try to keep as much of her covered as possible.    And I'm trying to keep my girls looking a little modest (hoping it carries on into the teenage years  fingers crossed)
