Treating thrush with Nystatin

Anyone else have any success with using Nystatin for thrush? I don't know if it's just a thing my baby is going through but i started using Nystatin yesterday and my son has been really fussy and crying more. He's a very good baby and hardly cries, it's not like him to be this fussy. Also he went a whole day without having a bowl movement. He usually has one really good poop a day. Today he did poop but I had to help him along by rubbing his belly and also doing the "stick the end of a thermometer in the bum" trick. Which worked but I didn't like doing it. I'm not sure if it's the medicine making him not poop or if it's a totally different issue. It just happened to be the same time I started him on the Nystatin when these problems occurred. Just looking for others advice or experiences. I'll be talking to the pharmistist or calling the hospital tomorrow if I don't see an improvement. Oh my son is almost 6 weeks old, and he's formula fed. I also been watering down his formula a bit too to see if this will help with the pooping problem

    My daughter who is 8 weeks is using nystatin also. She tends to spit it up and I don't blame her... I've used it before and it doesn't taste good. She had a couple loose BM's but that seems to have resolved itself. Other than that she seems to tolerate it well. Could it be just a coincidence that the constipation started at the same time as the meds? They told me to do 1 ml in each cheek 4 times a day after feedings and not before so it doesn't wash it out. I'm lucky if she gets it 2 times a day.. but hey its working. Maybe you can give it to your LO in smaller doses? I was going to suggest the same with watering down the formula... are you able to give breast milk at all? That should help loosen things up too... another thing that might help with the pain of constipation is to rub some "lube" on the tush... I use aquaphor baby... looks like vaseline. That might help ease things out easier... Oh and I woukd boil all bottles , nipples and pacifiers as much as possible to kill the thrush bacteria that way LO doesn't keep gettibg it. Good luck!

    I just posted about the same thing before I saw this. My 2 week old has thrush and seems like her tummy hurts and can't poop. Also the thrush dosnt seem to be getting better :( I'm calling the Dr again tomorrow. I'm wondering if the nystatin is the problem too.

    Could be; his thrush isn't that bad so I stoped using the nystastin for a whole day to see if my son will have a poo. So far no poo for today. I've also been giving him some diluted prune juice throughout the day to help him have a bm. I'll probably do the same and call my doctor or the pharmacy tomorrow to see if this may be causing the constipation. Good luck !

    They told us to continue with the Nystatin but to also give her mylanta for her tummy but when my husband went to get it the pharmacist said that was pretty harsh for a 2 week old and gave us Infant Gas Relief Drops by Comforts for Baby. He said it had the same active ingredients as mylanta but would be better for her. We have only had one dose so far so I can't say if it has helped yet or not.

    Try prune baby food. Put two baby spoonfuls in the bottle. My daughter had the same problem. I started that and it worked.
