Intense anxiety

I have a SEVERE phobia of doctors. Ever since I made my appointment for my first OB visit I’ve been having multiple anxiety attacks a day. I have nightmares all night (it’s currently 2:17 am and I’m too afraid to close my eyes because I don’t want my terrors to come back). I’ve slept maybe 2 hours a day since I made my appointment. I was so excited when I got the positive test I thought I could do it but it’s clear I just can’t.

I’m not looking for advice. Or statements about what to expect about the first appointment (I’m well aware). I’m just curious if anyone has postponed their first ultrasound so it’s done abdominally instead of vaginally? If so around what week did you make your appointment for? I have Kaiser so it’s unfortunately it as easy as calling my dr and asking 😭 the appointment center didn’t know.

Thank you.

I have had 6 pregnancies and only one time did they do a vaginal ultrasound. I was not expecting it, so I was taken aback when the appt began. every practice is different so I've learned. I postponed visits with 2 of my pregnancies. One of the OBs wouldn't even see you until you were 15 weeks which I loved. Your nearly half way there by the time you're seen. Makes it seem like it goes faster.

Always remember you are incharge in many instances when it comes to your OB. Even during birth. So if you want to postpone do it! I have never been seen before 8 weeks and at that point they should be able to do abdominal rather than vaginal.

They really won't do much down there after the 1st appt with the papsmear. I believe nothing unless toward the end you want checked for progress. Which isn't necessary. They'll swab your butt for GBS testing toward the end as well. Otherwise it's wham bam thank you mam you're out of there.

I would also suggest looking into hypnobirthing for throughout your pregnancy and for the birth. It helps with anxiety. I am not an anxious person and it helped me.

I wish you the best. It's a very anxious time in one's life. Hope this helps.

  • Thank you I did push it back. And I declined all internal exams. With my first I also declined the butt swab and they just treated me as if I had whatever they were testing for.
In terms of birth I requested to not be awake during my c section so that was also a life saver.
  • Good on you! You are your own advocate. I don't think you are alone in the fear of c sections. It's a major surgery. Definitely valid concerns.
