Sorry this is late but it's a whirlwind after giving birth...
Sophia Juliet was born Tuesday, April 15 at 10:13 am after a quick and successful induction. We went in at 8 pm Monday and I took a low dose of cytotec around 10:30. Two hours later the contractions were super strong and coming on top of each other, and I was dilated to 3 cm. They offered the epidural and I gladly took it. Putting the epi in was a bit painful and scary, but soon after I got some relief and was able to sleep an hour or two. They kept flipping me from side to side and giving me oxygen because my BP was fluctuating and the baby was becoming stressed. After some rest I started feeling contractions on my right side down in my groin. Self-dosing didn't help, so the anesthesiologist was called back in and gave me another dose. I dilated to about 6 cm, and the OB broke my water, which I felt a warm gushing down my leg. They detected some meconium in the fluid, so they alerted the NICU team to be present at delivery. Then around 8 am contractions got stronger and no matter what I did I couldn't stay on top of the pain. I could feel the intense pressure building but they wanted the baby to labor down to -1 or -2 station. So I endured it about an hour, until I couldn't stop the pushing and yelled for the OB. They came in and put me in position to push, and then talked me through. It was the hardest thing I've ever done, and that was still with the epi. It was only about 40 minutes of pushing and she came out. They whisked her to the warmer and cleared the meconium from her airway and checked her out. She was fine. 6lb 11.2 oz, 21.5 in long. Alert and rosy. OB stitched me up (2nd degree tear, ouch) and delivered the placenta while they laid her on me. I bawled my eyes out when we met.
The whole process lasted about 12 hours and I never needed the pitocin. The OB said I was very lucky how smooth and quickly it went. Unfortunately it hasn't been that smooth since we came home. My anxiety disorder has been through the roof thanks to the postpartum hormones and adjusting to bringing baby home. It has definitely hit me hard. I knew the first few nights would be hard, but I really had no idea. I am not bonding with her as much as I had hoped. Luckily, I have DH, my mom, and my sister taking care of me and Sophia. DH has been so spectacular; I could not survive this without him. He is being strong for both of us. I will see my OB next week about the anxiety and depression and just take it day by day.
Thank you everyone for your support and love these 9 months. Here is Sophia coming home from the hospital. :-)
