My parents live about 20 minutes away so we will see them often and DH's mom lives about 45 minutes away so we will see her on a fairly regular basis (not excited about this).
The furthest we have to travel is to see DH's grandfather in Queens - so that's about a 2 hour drive (without traffic). Hopefully by Thanksgiving we will have a good idea of baby's car habits and the trip will be easy.
We will be staying home but we stopped traveling for holidays a few years ago b/c DH was always working right up til the day and I refused to travel 12-15 hours on said holiday.
I am nervous about it being winter with a little baby so even if we usually traveled we'd be staying home. We do normally visit DH's grandmother for her birthday but this year DH and DS will go by themselves since there's no way I'm taking a newborn on a plane during flu season.
I actually think DH's family may be coming for Thanksgiving...not 100% though since that is def not normal!
I live far away, so I won't see anyone or travel for Thanksgiving. And I think by Christmas time our LOs will be out of that super newborn stage. The best piece of advice I've seen around is to baby wear when around lots of people. They have no problem invading baby's space in a stroller or swing or something, but not so much a grown-up's. Plus, since baby is all wrapped up it's not like they can easily ask to hold them. AND DS slept so much while being worn in the beginning, so it was win-win!
Ok, that wasn't at all about traveling. I have no words of wisdom there because DS was a terrible, terrible car traveler and it took us twice as long to reach anywhere!
We're planning to travel for Thanksgiving but I think we're going to host Christmas as I do not want to travel with a 3month old during possibly horrible weather.
We are hosting our parents and SIL for Thanksgiving. My mom is coming a day early to help get the house in order.
We are not traveling for Christmas. There are too many people who want to see us and we would rather establish our own traditions. Plus we are wary of her being around too many people unnecessarily during cold / flu season. We will try to make some weekend trips in early December to introduce her to relatives.
My parents live only 30 minutes away so it's not a big deal going over there for Thanksgiving. And MIL will be moving in a couple weeks from West Coast to just 4hours from us so she should be able to drive here both times. I probably just prefer everyone to come to our place this year for both holidays and have people cook here since my parents' house is cluttered with dust and cat fur everywhere!
I have no idea what we will do this year. The furthest we go is three hours away for Thanksgiving when my husbands family gets together. Last year it was closer to home, about twenty minutes away at his parents.
Our serious traveling will be in February to England to see my family so LO will be about 4/5 months.

As far as advice on travel soon after baby, I went on a 12hr road trip to see family when I was 6wks out from a c/s with DS1. My doc just said to make sure I move a lot due to still being in the risk of blood clots after the surgery. I had no problems. It was actually nice to get out and I was feeling pretty good even though I was nursing and still up at night. We got gas and food when DS was ready to nurse and it only took us I think and extra hour than it should have.
We live near NO family right now and my FIL told us he'd be coming for Thanksgiving to see the baby since that's when he could get his time off from work. He did, however, offer to take us all out to dinner for Thanksgiving dinner (something that never crossed my mind honestly) since I would be a 5wks out from a rcs and he felt bad making me cook a big meal like that I think. There will be 4 adults and 4 kiddos (he's bringing SIL and her 3 kids). I'm not complaining in the least... I'll make pie and call it a night, lol.
Christmas will be quiet. Just the 4 of us since we don't get step-DD this year.
DD's first holidays (also an October baby) we didn't travel. We did a low key Thanksgiving split between my ILs (they normally have a big get together at an aunt's house but they kept it just us at their house since DD was only a month old) and my family (which is always small if it's local, most of our family live in Oklahoma). Christmas my mom flew in to meet DD and we again split it between the ILs (although we did have the big get together at the aunt's house) and my family.
I hated that most of my family didn't get to meet DD until we made a trip to Oklahoma when she was 4mos old but I'm glad we stayed local and kept it pretty low key. It is hard to get the hang of nursing and it was nice to not worry about travel.
This year Thanksgiving we'll definitely stay home. My dad's family is trying to push us to come with him to Oklahoma but DH won't be here and I just know I won't feel up to it. I considered traveling for Christmas but again, DH won't be here and I'm not sure I feel up to traveling with a 2yr old and a roughly 2mos old by myself.
Currently going through our second deployment. Can't wait for Zoe to meet her daddy!
Personally I think traveling with a newborn is easier b/c they sleep a lot.
DD#1 was born 1 week before xmas and we go all over for xmas. Furthest away traveling was 45 min but we are home just to sleep between xmas eve and xmas day.

We rotate holidays every year. This year was supposed to be our turn for thanksgiving and christmas, but graciously my uncle took it off our hands. I figured it'd be easier to travel the hour when she's a newborn and sleepy than travel when she's 1 and fussy. So next year itll be a lot easier to cook and spend all the extra time decorating the house.

We'll be travelling back to NYC and to Canada for Christmas with the baby. We have no family here and that is really the best way for our families and friends to meet the baby. She'll be around 2 months at that point and would have had her first round of shots at least. We've been told by lots of our friends that flying with the baby at that age is probably one of the easiest times because she's likely to sleep so much. FX that is true!
Thanksgiving isn't even a holiday here, so I'll probably just be doing a small turkey for DH and myself. We'll see if we want to invite a few people over or not.
we do thanksgiving with my family and xmas with his. we are only 45 minutes from my parents and will go there for t-giving...not sure about spending the night, we usually do but bro and sil also have a little one and we have a toddler so we will see. we are hosting xmas this year thoguh MIL will do most of hte cooking at our house
We do Thanksgiving with both families, but we only live about 20 minutes from mine and 45 minutes from his, so we will go to my family's house first, then go to his.
For Christmas, we do Christmas Eve with MH family, and Christmas Day with my family. This year, I will be insisting that we have Christmas morning all to ourselves to enjoy with our LO, and we will join my family later in the day.
When LO #1 was born, we did Thanksgiving with our immediate families (parents and siblings) and traveled for that. For Christmas we just did my parents/siblings; DH family ended up sick.
This time around with LO#2 expected to arrive later than LO#1 did, we have talked about not traveling for Thanksgiving. Our family will just have to come to us if they want to see us. I'm not afraid to travel with kids, I just don't want to drive 2hrs one way if I end up with another c-section and recovery doesn't go super smooth. If my plan for a VBAC doesn't happen by 10/17, we'll have a scheduled c-section and I'm not sure how quickly I'll feel up to dealing with travel and spending the night elsewhere (which includes packing) and also the fact that we've had snow storms at Thanksgiving in the past.
We will be going about a six hr drive to my parents for Thanksgiving this year. Mainly because my DH and the rest if our kids deer hunt with my dad for those few days and we can't really do that at our house.
We have been doing Christmas at our house for the last few years. If anyone shows up, great and if not we just hang out and relax in the PJs and let the kids play with their stuff. When we lived closer to family, it was craziness when the kids were really little running from one place to the next and not getting to really enjoy our own family. Since putting a stop to that, its been much better.
LO I flew on a 4 hrs flight when LO was only 2 months old.
We did fine other than LO decided to do business 2 on the plane, other than that LO was asleep throughout the trip.
My parents are here in town so that's easy. We told DH's family that we were playing the newborn card this year and not traveling for either holiday, but that they were welcome to come to us. So they are all coming here for Thanksgiving (MIL/FIL and BIL/SIL/nephew). If I'm not feeling up to hosting the actual meal, my parents will have it at their house.
MIL/FIL will likely come back for Christmas, although that's still a little up in the air at this point.
Our first roadtrip will likely be the first or second weekend in December for nephew's birthday. It's about a 3.5 hour drive- hopefully we're feeling up to it by then and hopefully we've got a good traveler on our hands!
