@Ashtog

I hope you see this and it doesnt get lost.

If I recall correctly, you live in Edmonton (as do I) or nearby. Who are you getting to check your car seat installation? By this point, you are probably a seasoned pro after having more than one child. I am at a loss as I cannot find any car seat clinics and seem to think they no longer do them. I want to trust DH has installed correctly, but I cant risk it.

I would love to know what you did in the past.

  • I checked online and although the fire department used to, they dont anymore. I know they will check at the hospital before we take LO home, but I kinda want it checked before then. I had high hopes that public health would offer clinics, but no such luck.

  • Next time you go to the doctor, ask them if they can check out the car seat.
  • Do you have an infant seat with a base to install and then the seat detaches? That's what we have and I was planning on getting our car seat inspected once we installed it. But my husband and I just installed the base yesterday, it was super easy to install (following the instructions) and once we were done we tested it to make sure it doesn't move 1" in either direction (as per the instructions) and I don't think we need to get it checked now.

Installing is pretty straight-forward and you'll know when it's right because the base won't move. I would suggest 2 people do it though, so that one of you can put your weight on the base to push it down while the other person tightens the straps on the anchor clips. That way it's in there SNUG.

At the hospital we're delivering at someone comes out with you when you leave to double-check the car seat is properly installed, I think that is standard at most hospitals. But after installing it yesterday, I feel very confident that it's in correctly and safe, so I don't feel the need to go to get it inspected before the baby comes. If we had it installed and I wasn't as sure, I would have. Our public health unit has car seat check clinics once a month.

  • In my corner of Ontario, the local health unit's website has information about car seat clinics. They partner with another organization to run them. Maybe check your health unit?

  • @RachelCA29 - We do have a Click Connect system. While the back portion of the base (where the UAS/LATCH strap is fed through) does not move more than an inch in any direction, the front portion closest to the back of the front seats moves easily. Youtube videos say this is normal? I just cant see that kind of movement being normal - I mean if we were involved in a side impact accident, I can absolutely see the seat moving/pivoting around the UAS/LATCH attachment points.

@Ashtog and @Spacepotatoes - I checked with public health. I do have a friend who did the tech certification course years ago, but she lives hours away. I am just going to keep calling health offices to see if they have someone there by chance.

  • @Soupy84‌ Sorry I was being nosy and read this. ;) If you join the Facebook group Car Seats For The Littles, you can post pics/video of your installation and they can check it for you, or answer your questions about how much movement is allowed. They also have a list of car seat techs or might be able to help you find one in your area. :)

  • @Chillypenguin - I have never heard of this group, but that sounds awesome! Thanks for the suggestion!

  • Try calling the maternity floor at the hospital where you are delivering. They gave us a packet while we were on our hospital tour that had a list if all the places that check car seats.
  • @Soupy84 If it moves that much I would get it checked. We were planning to, because my fear was that we wouldn't do it right, but ours is definitely within the "shifts less than 1 inch rule". And that's with my husband yanking and shaking it, so I feel confident about it. But yeah, if it's moving that much you should have it looked at to see if something isn't adjusted correctly or clicked into place enough.

    Good Luck!

  • You could also try calling some of the car dealerships. Here in Fredericton the ford dealership does inspections at the end of each month. They don't advertise it but the hospital told us they do. Could be worth trying some of the bigger ones in Edmonton.

I'm sorry but waiting until you are leaving the hospital is absolutely terrible advice.
The person at the hospital comes out with you to make sure you have a seat not to make sure it's installed properly. And that person is likely the nurse who discharges you. It is doubtful that person is a tech.

  • The base moving more towards the front sounds normal. Since we don't tether infant seat bases it will happen. Also where do you have it installed in your car? In the middle? That may not be the best place for it especially if it does not lay flush with the rest of the backseat. Try it in one of the outbound positions and see if it feels more secure.
