baby carriers

Re: baby carriers

  • I got the Moby and Bjorn.  I like the Moby and once you figure out how to put the thing on and get used to it, it's really easy.  I got the Bjorn because I thought it was more comfy and didn't like the Ergo because it seemed bulky to me.  I think this is one of those things where one isn't better than the other, but all about preferences!  If you like one over the other, then get it regardless of whatever everyone else is doing!

  • I really love my tula, woven wraps, and my ring sling. The wraps have a definite learning curve but I like the feel of them once you get it down. I can still wear my 25lb 20 month old in a wrap. The tula is like an ergo, but I find the shoulder straps to be so much more comfortable.

H will wear this baby just like he did DD. He uses the tula mostly, but he's wrapped her before. It makes her so happy when her dad carries her!

    Super cute family!!

  • I used a ring sling and Beco butterfly 2 the first time, and plan to use them again this go around in addition to a woven wrap. I liked thatt he Beco came with the infant insert and that it wasnt bulk like the ergos. I hear that the infant insert for the ergo gets pretty warm. Also, I liked that it had another panel, allowing me to put my daughter in the carrier while still on my front, and then i could move her to my back without the fear of dropping her or her falling out. I just recently bought a toddler size Tula and was rather disappointed that it didnt have this feature. I like the wrap and ring sling for their discreet nursing capabilities. My husband liked wearing her in the Beco. Sometimes, you just dont want to bring a stroller somewhere. Wearing them is pretty much the only way to go grocery shopping!!!

If you and hubby are different sizes you won't be able to safely use the same k'tan - it's especially important for newborns that the carrier fit snuggly and hold baby high and tight on the wearer's chest.  Wraps fit any size wearer as do ring slings and mei tais (for the most part).  Buckle carriers are a bit more "picky" - what one person finds a comfortable fit may not work for another.  If your DH is tall/broad chested he would likely be most comfortable in a buckle carrier with plus size shoulder straps.

, I am switching to a K'tan Breeze just because they are quicker to take off and on.
For those of you choosing the k'tan breeze, would you mind sharing why you chose the breeze over the regular K'tan? I'm having a hard time figuring out what the difference is. Thanks!

I believe the main difference is material - the breeze looks to be made of a mesh material (or at least partly made of it), so as to make it cooler in the warmer months - but if I'm wrong, someone who knows should definitely pipe in :)

@ncbelle Question for you, since I know you know a lot about this - woven wraps.  I never tried one with M, but I've always been intrigued and a little interested in diving in.  Do you have any good resources on woven wraps - how to choose one, good wraps to start, etc.

A WAHM who used to make some of my favorite CDs has started to make her own wraps, and they are gorgeous, but super expensive.  Some of my favorite CD stores seem to carry girasols that are gorgeous, but it's all just a little overwhelming :)

ETA: I did read through your blog post on babywearing and wraps, so I know that my questions are mostly repetitive.  I think it's like with CDs... until you do it, it seems scary and foreign.

  • @joules235 so you think the Lillebaby airflow complete is a comparable SSC? With DS I had a Bjorn since I didn't do any research. I loved wearing him but after a couple months it killed my back and was a total waste of money. I spent months agonizing over a new carrier and finally ordered a Beco Gemini since I was mainly focused on something that worked well for the first year, wouldn't kill my back and be good for someone petite like me. Then a week ago I won a Lillebaby airflow carrier. Which is awesome but that leaves me wondering if I should return the Beco Gemini to amazon and use my refund on something else or keep them both? I really knew nothing about the Lillebaby, is it going to be similar to the gemini? I read a review or two of back issues but it is hard to tell with reviews. Still waiting for it to come to try it out but wanted your thoughts.

  • @joules235‌ not made out of mesh but ergo just came out with their 360 design which also allows for a forward facing position! Just incase you wanted another option to look at
  • WIth DS I had a sling (he hated it) and a Bjorn (he loved it, once he was a little older and could face out).

With DD I borrowed a Moby wrap from a friend and she loved it as a newborn.  It was a hot summer when she was born so I didn't really use it outside much except for early in the day. for walks and errands and such- mostly used around the house (in the a/c) or places like stores, the mall, etc.

This time around I am likely going to buy a Boba- it is lighter weight than the Moby and stretchier.  I'm also looking at the Happy Wrap, it's made of bamboo (so super lightweight- nice for summer) with stretch.  I like a wrap because it's so adjustable and really, it's quite easy once you have the hang of it.  The sizing of the K'tan is a negative for me because DH will wear the baby as well- I'm 5'10 and slim, DH is 6'4 and slim  but obviously broader than me.

FTM here, so I haven't put any of these into use yet.

I have a K'Tan Breeze from the registry because it's good for newborns and warmer months. Got it in neutral black so DH and I can both use it - we're comparable in size.

A friend gave us their Moby because DS hated it, so we'll give it a try but it looks awful complicated/warm for summer.

Older sister gave us their Ergo and I think that will be great for DH and me once LO graduates from the K'Tan. I was surprised that there's no "pocket" for the baby to go into, so I'm going to have to YouTube some instructions for it.

I'd personally also like to try a ring sling but DH would never wear it and I'm having a hard time convincing him that we need 4 different carriers.

And thanks to all the PP - especially the STMs! Your comments have been very helpful :)

ETA: Do any of the STMs have a preferred ring sling that they like? I registered for a Sakura Bloom, but it's pretty pricey.

  • I think I am going to get a Tula. I have heard nothing but good things about them, and the moms I do know that have them adore them.
  • For DD I had an Infantino that DH used, a Moby that I used in the first few months, and an Ergo that I loved when she got a little bigger.  I am adding a K'Tan Breeze this time to replace the Moby.  It was SO HOT and I had DD in March.  So I can't imagine being comfortable in it in the Summer.

    ____________quote fail_______________
@ElTrain5 (or others with a partner who wears) -- Did the same size k'tan fit you both?

I am 5' 0" and DH is 6' 1" so I feel like with the slings and wraps we'll have to get separate ones. Can anyone speak to this?

@rastrau‌ I have a zanytoes linen sling that I like. They also have cotton ones that are a little cheaper. Or you can try sleeping baby productions. A decent sling will probably still cost about $50. Totally worth it in my opinion. It was the easiest for me to use and learn to use.

  • @jclester614‌ - I was wondering this too. I just don't think DH and I could share a K'tan. I'm 5'1" and need a small. He's 5'11" and a broad shouldered guy. I see myself in the K'tan more the first months around the house and us sharing the ergo beyond that.

  • FTM mom here... I have received a moby wrap already, and have the Ergo on our registry.  I would like to baby wear as much as possible, particularly when walking with our dog.  She's decent on a leash, but I just think it would be too much to try to push a stroller and walk her at the same time.  I also am concerned about the possible hip issues with the Bjorn, which is why we went with Ergo.

I was also thinking I could baby wear and walk the dog more easily! Same here, he's fine on the leash but not perfect, and it would be nice to not have to deal with him and the stroller when I want/need to take both baby and pup out.

  • Thanks @joules235 and @lest12. I had heard I wouldn't want a lot of extra fabric for the wraps, but that seems easier than bringing multiple carriers around for me and DH, and not being able to switch off and on.

Sounds like we should just try things on. Hopefully I can find somewhere to do that!
  • I'm not too experienced but the K'tan doesn't have the extra material that the moby seems too. The K'tan is more like a few "Loops" that you can tighten as opposed to one piece of material that you 'wrap'. But again, someone correct me if I'm wrong. I've played with the K'tan a bunch but not the moby and never actually used either :)

  • We have the baby bjorn active which I think is good for little babies right away until they are about 15 pounds.

After that the ERGO is amazing. Wouldnt trade it for anything. I can still put my two year old in it no problem.

  • I have the original K'tan that I used with all 3 of my girls and LOVED it. Never needed another carrier. DH did order a K'tan in his size but never ended up baby wearing.

I just received the K'tan Breeze in the mail today as a gift since south TX heat is killer. I'm debating the size though. It's the same size as my other K'tan but I lost about 30lbs btwn my girls and this pregnancy. I've read that the mesh doesn't have as much stretch so I was hoping that would be enough difference to seem smaller. But I'm not sure. I've tried several size baby dolls in it with different positions. It's seems to fit fine for the 3mo+ baby but may be big for the newborn hold. I'm going to keep playing with it. Not sure how much this mesh shrinks once washed.
  • I'm really scared of carriers, particularly the k'tan I got. How do I know if it's too loose, or too tight?

I looked up baby wearing groups in Boston but could only find one and they meet during the day... I wish I thought any retail store salesperson would have a clue..

  • I finally got the Lillebaby I won in the mail today. It is interesting with the mesh but I am not sure if it is going to be terribly lighter since there still it a ton of material. I like how much softer the Beco feels. I learned you can back cross strap either so I am going to try that out tonight. I am so petite I was having trouble reaching the back buckle and felt the straps were bunching up under my arms, so maybe that tweak will change my opinion. I really want to try out DS in it but I am afraid then he'll be jealous when it is used on the baby all the time not him so for now I've only tried it with a 5lb bag of sugar. I need to borrow a baby, lol.

Also the Beco is way cuter with a fun print and the Lillebaby is just black. Is it silly/vain to keep a $130 carrier when I have a free one just for the fashion.

I really wanted to buy a gauze carrier. I found one in a local shop, but it is twice the price of those sold on Etsy. In general, they look to be comparable, with the local shop carrier being 36 inches wide while the Etsy wrap is 25 inches wide. Do you think the extra foot of width is necessary?

Also, I know I want a gauze carrier for this summer, but I am thinking about also purchasing a woven wrap - does this seem redundant? The only other baby wearer I know said gauze is harder to master, but if I do, woven will be easy to pick up - does that seem right? Finally, I won't be able to get to the local baby wearer international group until after little one is here, and the turn around time for the wraps is a few weeks, so I wanted to order first and take with me and baby. Does that seem like a sound plan?

If it helps, here is a link to the Etsy site:
  • I got an Ergo from someone who was finished with theirs. Got another at my shower, someone just gave me a moby wrap ( I hope I can figure our how to use) someone gave me another carrier not sure the name and also I got a hiking carrier.

I think I have enough carriers. Lol

  • I ordered a beco Gemini and have a ring sling from dd. I didn't love the ring sling, but it was one of the few available 10 years ago. I'm hoping the beco is more user friendly and comfortable

  • I'm going to use a ring sling and a Tula. I may look into a woven wrap but some are pretty spendy. My sister is a huge baby wearer advocate and loves the ring slings and Tulas which is why I am going with them as well.
  • Nuroo Pocket. I bought this thing last week. It's like a shirt that has a pocket for baby's feet inside. Great for skin to skin. Supposedly you don't even have to take baby out to get vaccination shots--there is a hole to pull his foot out. Seemed to get good reviews on amazon and BRU. Has anyone actually used it? Sorry it looks like it will be sideways, but I am mobile and can't figure out how to spin it.
