Opinions?

We are supposed to travel 1.5 hours tomorrow to my in-laws for Easter. I'm lucky that I have great in-laws, and I was looking forward to it. MIL used to watch DD the first year I worked until we moved around Thanksgiving. With the horrible winter weather, illnesses, and her surgery, we have barely been able to see them and I know they are really missing DD. I also want to see my nephew who is the same age as DD.

I am 37w1d. At my appointment Thursday I was 3 cm dilated and 70% effaced. The past 2 evenings I have had painful contractions that feel like early labor, but they slow down overnight. I lost my mucus plug yesterday/today. Would you drive 1.5 hours away? I had the first half on my prenatal care down there, so worst case if I go into labor I am already established with a group that delivered DD. I'm worried about going into labor and trying to drive home and having things get intense halfway home.

I just don't want to stay home and then not have the baby for 2 more weeks and have missed out, but I also don't want to take chances. Would you go or stay home?

Re: Opinions?

  • I would absolutely go if you don't have super fast labors.

Personally i would rather have arranged for the ILs to come to me at that point, but I imagine it's too late for you to change plans. I've been having stabby vajay and have started losing my mucus plug and i know i wouldn't want to drive that far at this point. It's your decision though. If you do decide to go - definitely take your hospital bag with you just incase.

  • If you really want to see them, I'd go. It sounds like you have a just in case plan set up. I don't envy you having to sit in a car for 1.5 hours each way though! I'd be so uncomfortable!

  • I would have had the IL's up to our house, but we were planning on going to our old church (everyone misses DD and they are dying to see her) and my IL's have an Easter egg hunt and other things planned.

I think I will just see how things go today/tonight, and bring my hospital bag just in case. Thanks, ladies. I know my mom thinks I shouldn't go, so I didn't want to be irresponsible. I wasn't expecting all these potential early labor signs so early!

  • I would go, honestly. You sound like you have a decent scenario even if you were to go into labor while there.

  • With a decent backup plan, I think you're okay to go. I purposely planned for my parents to come to us tomorrow but I don't have much of an alternative plan for where they live (2 hours away).

  • My doctor said to me yesterday not to drive more than 90 minutes away...I think you'll be fine, you'll know when to leave if you have a problem. That's about how long you'd wait to go into the hospital anyways if you started laboring at home.

  • If your not feeling up to it then stay home ... but if you do, 90 minutes shouldn't be a huge deal. Lots of people live far from hospitals and birthing centres, and I'm sure you would make it in time. Wouldn't be the most comfortable 90 minutes, but ....
  • My personal experience... I'm also 3cm dilated and 70% effaced, I asked my dr if I could drive an hour away and he suggested that I don't unless it's absolutely necessary.
But that's just me. I think you can use your discretion and go if you feel up to it.

  • I live about an hour and half away from my doctor, and am planning on staying home up until I know that I am in labor. If my labor comes on very quickly and we just can't wait an hour and half to get to my doc we will be calling an ambulance. Weirdly, the EMT who would be assisting is also my husbands coworker and friend - idk how I would feel after exposing my crotch to him ;))

Do whatever feels right for you, personally I live that far away from my doc and don't see the big deal.

  • Let your IL's know what's going on today--- see how today and tonight goes and decide in the morning.
  • Like PP's said, if you feel up to it go. If you're established with a doctor there, you have an awesome back up plan should anything happen. If you don't feel up to going, let your IL's know what's been going on- I'm sure they'd understand why you can't make it.
  • Thanks! Right now we are planning on going unless something changes tonight or in the morning. Hopefully baby girl stays put for a little longer!
