Bottle before bed

So with Lo turning 1 next week. EEK!  I have been reading how its important to get them from not taking a bottle before bed... Right now its part of our bedtime routine.. We usually do bath, jammies, book, 8 oz bottle and then lay down for bed.  Am I the only one?  I know I should be brushing his teeth after the bottle but I havent he only has 2.

I cant imagine just taking his bottle away next week already and he always drinks the full 8 oz.

Im wondering if  I should try doing the bottle before the bath so he gets used to not going to sleep with it?  He never falls asleep drinking it but I think it just make him a little sleepy.

I know ive heard the sooner you get rid of it the better.

  • Why is it so important?

  • Thats my question too just wondering if I was crazy because I havent started to think about it..I guess it does make sense though the older they get the harder it will be to get rid of it.
  • We've recently shifted it a bit earlier (LO will also be one next week. So crazy!) and it seems to be okay. (Fingers crossed.)

  • I would try decreasing the amount.

The main reason I have heard is tooth decay and possible tooth misalignment.   I am personally thinking that I am going to have to continue with the bottle past a year though.  I have been googling this quite a bit and it seems a lot of mothers go with the bottle past a year and their LO's have done fine.  Naps, bedtime are such an issue for me as it is I just can't see forcing this issue.

  • For what its worth I talked to a friend at lunch and she said she just stopped giving her little over 2 year old a bottle before bed and she had no problems giving it up so that made me feel better tee hee:)  I wont rush it then. Ill worry about the switch to WCM first!
  • If he takes 8 oz before bed I would keep giving the bottle for now.  I'm certainly no expert but I don't really see why he has to drop it just because he's turning 1.  It seems like he still needs it.  My LO BF after dinner, then we do bath and bedtime routine which ends with a bottle to "top her off".  Sometimes she takes 2 oz, sometimes up to 4.  After the bottle she is usually nice and relaxed and falls asleep easily.  My LO is younger than yours (she will only be 11 months in a few days) but I doubt we will be dropping that bottle by 1.
  • I've looked other places and can't figure this out-sorry! WCM... Whole cows milk? Or something else? Thanks!

  • My LO gets an 8 oz bottle before bed time too. I feed it to him (he won't hold his own bottle - the prince!) and then he goes to bed. I can't see dropping this anytime soon... And I feel like this will be the last one to be dropped.

I have bigger fish to fry - he won't even drink from a sippy or eat table food. I definitely have my work cut out for me!

I plan on discussing the bottle situation with the pedi in a few weeks at his 1 year appt. I know plenty of kids older than 1 still drinking from a bottle, and at night.
  • SDD still had a bottle before bed until she was 2ish and DS did as well. We did switch it over to milk at some point around 1 ish but they definitely still needed it. I will continue this with DD as well.

  • My LO still takes 8oz before bed too. I thought the only problem is not letting them sleep with a bottle, and that is what damages the teeth. We don't do that. I feed him , take the bottle out and put him to bed. What do I know?? Guess I will be asking the pediatrician this too.
