Toddlers: 24 Months+

Wetting during naps=UTI?

My 2 year old daughter has been potty trained since she was 20 months old, including at nap and bed time. She RARELY has accidents but has had upwards of probably 6 or 7 in the past 2 weeks during nap time at school. Her teacher mentioned a UTI being a possible culprit. Anyone else have any insight? Our Dr.'s office has a free nurse helpline I plan on calling if it continues much more. Thanks!

Re: Wetting during naps=UTI?

  • I forgot to mention that! She is almost 2 1/2 now. She did have an accident last night as well. They regularly make her potty around 1230 and they go down for nap at 1. Today they asked her to go one extra time at 1 after everyone else was down and I guess she refused to go, and then had an accident. It's just frustrating because she's been dry for SO long and now all of a sudden it feels like she's regressing. And her teachers are frustrated because they're having to change her cot sheet and blankets every day, which I understand as a preschool teacher myself. But there is no way in hell we're going back to pull-ups.

  • I think if it was a UTI there would be other symptoms. My guess is that she's going through a growth spurt/milestone and is sleeping harder/heavier than in the past. It's also possible that she started drinking more at lunch/before nap. At my girls school they play outside before lunch/nap now, and I think they drink more water when they play outside.

Anyway, I don't consider any bedwetting that happens to be the same as an "accident" because for the most part it's out of their control. Sometimes they just sleep so deeply that it happens. The other day my 4 year old (who has been PTd since she was 22 months) had an accident during nap. She was really tired and dead asleep. Personally, I wouldn't worry about it and I wouldn't make a big deal out of it at all. I'd just make sure she had enough extra clean clothes at school.

  • Ditto PPs.  My DD has been potty trained about a year and she has had phases where she was wetting her bed at nap or bedtime.  For her it would be a phase that would last a week or so and then it would get better.  If she doesn't seem uncomfortable then it's not likely a UTI.  I had loads when I was a kid and my mom said you could usually tell from the smell of the pee.
  • My kid also goes in phases with this and she PTd quite easily.

I asked the pedi and he told me not to even worry about it as it's common to struggle with this until 5ish.

  • I agree with PPs as well regarding the absence of other symptoms.  My daughter can UTI from birth until almost 2 (born with a problem in bladder that was corrected with surgery) and she was inconsolable most of the time and usually ran a very high fever.  It may be that she is sleeping deeper or more soundly due to being comfortable with her surroundings or some growing she is doing.  Maybe just go back to making a really big deal about being dry for a while to remind her how important it is.

I know how you feel about not wanting to go back to pull ups.  Ha ha.  We just ditched them finally because they are practically diapers and didn't do much to deter her from peeing in them rather than the toilet.
