How does this board feel about...

...Kaya?

For a girl, obvsly. In general, do you like it? Also, which spelling do you prefer Kaya or Kaia? From what I've read, both are legit spellings.

  • I'm not a fan.  I've heard worse, though.

  •  It's not remotely my style but it's pretty sounding.

I like the Kaia spelling.  Kaya makes me want to say it Kay-ah instead of Kai- ah (which I believe is the pronunciation you are looking for).

  • I like it ok.  Reminds me of Kiera too.  And isn't there an American Girl doll named this?  I can't decide if that's a good thing or a bad thing.

It's okay.  I certainly don't dislike it, but it wouldn't be in my top name choices, either.

    I prefer Kaia.

    All of this.

    +1

This exactly.  The spelling Kaya makes me want to say Kay-ah when I assume you're going for the long /i/.

  • So consensus is Kaia. Interesting. And yes, it would be pronounced Ky-uh.

Theres also Kaija, which has Eastern European roots, but that's a stretch, I think, even though I do like that spelling as well.

Of the first two options, I'd go with Kaia as well, but I think Kaija is my favorite! Why is it a stretch, because it doesn't match your heritage?

  • We used to have a kitten Kaia (we didn't pick the name). But I'd agree it's more a name for real babies than furbabies.

An alternative would be Gaia, you know, as in mother earth. I always thought the name was derived from that.

  • Like it a lot! I actually considered the Swedish version, Kaja (pronounced the same), but then my mom told me that it's the Swedish word for a big, ugly black bird and that kind of ruined it for me. Of the English spellings, I kind of like Kaia better-- I'm not sure why Kaya makes me think KAY-ah when it looks just like Maya, but it does.

this allows although you would probably have to correct people's pronunciation quite often... I have a friend named Asja (ah sya) but she is used to correcting people... same with her patents Bojana and Jaksa (Boy yawn ah & yahk sha)
