AW- Is this name "asking for it"??

Ok, so yeah, I COULD put this in the name/sex thread.  Or I COULD make one of those nifty polls if I had any idea how to do that, but I'm just going to ask you guys straight out right here in my own SS thread (I don't think I've had one of these yet and I promise I won't ever do it again! 8->)

DH and I are pretty set on the name Rowdy.  We haven't high-fived on it yet (which sets things in stone, of course), but we just can't think of any name we like better.  We are fun-loving weirdos and assume our offspring will be the same.

My question is....are we nuts?  Is this a horrible name that will scar my kid forever?  I mean, it's not like naming him Apple, right?? Or is it?

  • Loading the player...
  • It is odd and definitely nms, but I don't think it's scarring.

    1st pregnancy: m/c began 1/12/09 d&c 1/13/09 8wks. Baby stopped growing at about 6wks.

    Delaney: Born 10/15/09

    Gavin: Born 4/8/11

    Baby #3: due July 10, 2014

  • My husband has a cousin named Rowdy so it's not totally weird to me. And he's awesome. The name suits him well. Do what you like!
  • I don't like it....

And what about when he's an adult looking for a job? No...just no.
Yes, this type of thing is my concern as well.  Hence my hesitance to seal the deal with a high five.

DH says LO could just go by his first and middle name's initials if he wanted something more "serious"...

I still say he could never be president, though!

  • I think of rowdy roddy piper ;) I cut two little kids hair and their names are chaos and mayhem and couldn't be more well behaved boys. Each their own

  • NO.
    Roddy would be close...Roderick.
    imageimage"">

  • It's just a name I went to school with a rowdy and to my knowledge he has had no problems finding a job. Seriously he could go by Rod or his middle name if you and DR like it go for it. I don't think of a name as a death sentence. A name will not make or break your child and his future.

  • I think it would be an adorable nickname or even middle name, but I think it's kind of terrible as a first name. How about another R name with Rowdy as a nn?

  • I am so glad I was not the only one to immediately think of wrestling. NMS personally. But that isn't quite what you asked. Scar your kid forever? Perhaps not. Like Apple? Pretty much yeah.

True Story: the state treasurer of Alabama is a pretty distinguished balding old businessman with glasses, and I kid you not, his name is Youn.g Boozer.

I don't think this guy has any problems getting a job or being taken seriously!

ETA:  edited his name with a period because I don't want people who are legitimately googling him to end up here ;-)

It's so different. I have to admit that at first I was totally against it but I think about how we take everything so seriously, why not have fun with a name? Some will love it, some will hate it. Some will copy it. I think it's totally high-five worthy.
  • ETA:  Are you guys southern?  For some reason I feel like nobody would blink an eye at a yuppie person named Rowdy in/from the South!  ;-)
Yes, we are from the south  ;)

I'm going to have to disagree with the whole nobody would blink an eye at a yuppie person from the South with a name like Rowdy. Sure, it could be a nickname, but not a given name by any means. Now a redneck from the South? Absolutely.

Okay, so maybe the "nobody would blink an eye" was a little much.  Unless you name your kid a boring name like Robert or Michael (no offense to moms who like those names ;-)), somebody is going to side-eye.  I don't think that's a reason to forego a name you like though. It's not like you're naming the kid Rainbow Sparkles.

(FTR OP, Rowdy does not make me think redneck at all... And my husband is from the south which is why I wondered. ;-))

  • I say no. It's not a name. You could always use it as a nickname. But then at least he will have a normal name he could go by if he wants.

well, we actually got the idea from one of those baby naming websites...so it must
sorta be a name, since it was suggested by a baby naming robot    :D

I did like what your labor buddy said though, make sure you love it, if you do then go for it!

Apparently most of the rowdys are from texas. About 30%. :)

That's my brother's name! No lie. So apparently in the 80s there was a swimmer named Rowdy Gains (spelling might be different) so that's how my parents found/heard the name. Honestly he never really got crap for his name. More just people asking, "so is he rowdy" and to which I answer, not even close, he's the most quiet reserved kid.
It's a memorable name I give you that. If you both love it go for it. Also a common concern is resumes and such, he works in a huge city in a big finance company so it clearly hasn't effected him.

Edit: reading above, we're not southern either...from new england.

  • Eh...personally I think it's pretty awful.  Although I never thought of Rowdy Gaines as sounding dumb, but I also didn't think that was actually his first name, but a nickname.  I think in the sports world you can get away with names like that, but...I don't know.  However, if you and DH truly love it and aren't just trying to be different...well, it's your kid. :)

  • I don't like it due to the negative connotation to the word. Similar to mayhem and chaos (also the name of my friends pit bulls which is infuriating considering the breed already has negative connotations)
