Doctor's orders don't lose weight

My doctor recommends that I not lose weight. I'm on hbp meds and it was causing swelling, but losing 6 lbs helped to combat that and has made me feel better. I didn't do any fad diets. I just watched what I ate and started exercising. Well I told my doctor that and they literally chewed my head off. I'm actually overweight and I want to get off of the meds.

  • He just said as a nursing mom, I shouldn't be losing weight. I didn't think it would be an issue since I take my vitamins too.

Did he give you a reason? Did he say never lose weight or just hold off until baby is weened?

  • Wow, as a nursing Mom, all I did was lose weight! (albeit it was a slow and steady loss). Could the concern not be weight loss, but the speed of the weight loss???? Did he seemed worried about you or worried about milk supply?

  • I've lost 20 pounds since Thanksgiving and have had no supply problems.  Everyone is different, but if you monitor your supply, it's definiately feasible to lose weight. Just start slow and see what your body can handle.
  • I had my LO in November 2013, and I've been losing gradually. I'm thinking the concern was that my baby wouldn't get all of her nutrients. However, she's still having a great amount of wet and soiled diapers.

  • I haven't noticed any changes in my milk supply. LO is gaining quite well and has doubled her birthweight plus a few extra pounds.

As long as your supply is fine, I don't see the problem.

  • I should've gone in a little bit more depth about why. As for extra calories, I'm always hungry so I do eat probably a lot more than I should at times, but I've been making sure it's not junk or fast food. My eating habits were horrible after I had my LO making me gain more weight. I changed all of that.

I would ask your doctor for his particular reasons. If his only reason is that you are nursing, then the response is that you are keeping an eye on your supply (baby's output, etc) and are eating at least 600 extra calories/day for nursing.

Congrats on your weight lost. My goal is 20 lbs. As I stated to a pp, I had my LO in November 2013, and I've lost 6 lbs this far. I feel great, and my LO is doing quite well.
