Mastitis with weird symptoms? (XP from J14)

edited April 2014 in Breastfeeding
OK so I am almost certain I had mastitis a couple of weeks ago- pump wasn't working well, got painful lumps, then chills, flu-like body ache, and sore throat but no other symptoms. Since I caught it early I treated it at home with suggestions from kellymom (pumping, massaging, heat, etc.) and a few other places plus natural antibiotic food/drinks and it went away. I never called my midwife since this happened Fri after the office was closed and I felt OK on Monday.

I feel exactly like I did then but with no real pain in the breasts. I am still weaning so I get engorged sometimes, but I have no lumps in my breasts. I do have a painful lump in my right armpit that I discounted as an ingrown hair. Upon further inspection, there is nothing visible at the surface and isn't even red.

My body never runs a fever so that's no help to me. I would think it could be a cold or allergies, but I have no symptoms other than extreme throat swelling and ache, body ache, fatigue, and chill. It's painful to turn my head between my throat and aches and I feel kind of fuzzy headed. I've had no new food or drink I could be reacting to. Sleep is about the same/better than it has been the past few weeks.

I fully intend to call my midwife's office in the morning but wanted to get some perspective in the meantime. Anyone felt any of this? It all came on so suddenly and intensely like last time.

I plan to get a long, hot shower just in case there is something clogged in my breasts or armpits. Suggestions are welcome!

  • yes, it could be mastitis again-- the one time i had it, i thought i had fought it off-- i successfully got rid of the clog on one side of my breast, and the redness and fever/chills went away. but a couple of days later it came back in the other side of the same breast, and that's when i went to the doctor and got on antibiotics.

you probably shouldn't be trying to wean/cut back on nursing sessions if you are fighting off blocked ducts/mastitis.

did you talk to your midwife?

  • I ended up going to urgent care because it was closer/faster. He said it could be mastitis still or some other sort of bacteria in my throat I've been carrying, but either way the treatment is a high and long dose of antibiotics. Being very careful about the weaning until I know I've beat this thing.
