I don't see how it's reckless. Especially if you've done countless hours of research and have multiple doctors on board with your plan and all come to the conclusion that it's what's best for the mother and baby. Medically needed or not. I'd imagine you strongly disagree with people saying that giving birth at home is reckless because women and their babies have died because they were unable to get medical attention quick enough. All forms of delivery have their risks but you (generally speaking) do your research and choose to deliver in a way that you think is the best way for you and your child. I don't know any mother that would willingly put her child in danger. She's just doing what she feels is right.
I agree with this and I stated before how terribly incensed I am at the implication. I have done TONS and TONS and TONS of research on birth. It was the birth of my freaking child, not some casual event that I figured would just happen one way or another.

    My UO:

Barring cultural reasons or very complicated medical/emotional issues, I do not like patients that refuse students in the room for procedures. I get that it can be uncomfortable to have several people in the room (not just applicable to birth) but students need to learn too. I agree there are some times where it is definately not appropriate, but a routine procedure where complications are not likely provides valuable experience. And even if complications occur, it's another teachable moment.
I never mind being part of a teachable moment or having people in the room. I DO have a problem with people other than someone I personally chose or consented to performing tasks on me. This happened to me during my epidural. I had a nurse anesthetist forced upon me against my wishes, despite the actual anesthesiologist being in the same room. I had to advocate for myself but it took several failed attempts on her part and since it was my first baby I was scared to speak up till I finally couldn't take it any more. Naturally they BOTH billed me. I laid into her office something fierce. I love and respect nurses but they're not doctors. I spent a long time researching my physician and who would fill in for her should she be unavailable so I expect to be respected in that decision.

We all have very different opinions and experiences and that's a big part about why I really like this board.

All that being said, I think people are way to quick to extrapolate things to the n-th degree.  Example:

Saying "Chocolate milk shakes are high in fat and calories and contribute to the obesity epidemic"

Is not also saying "Any mother that's every given their child a chocolate milk shake or drank a chocolate milkshake in front of their child is obviously oblivious to the obesity epidemic and is a terrible parent and is doing everything wrong wrong wrong! and I am judging each and every one of you that drink them."

    Not even close.

And now I am going to go get a chocolate milkshake and go home because 1) They are delicious, and 2) today has been a crappy day.

This analogy is really missing a few pieces of the conversation though.

Try "Chocolate shakes are high in fat and calories and contribute the the obesity epidemic... but vanilla shakes are great and 100% the way to go if you want to avoid any of the downfalls of the chocolate shakes!"

  • I'm late to the party, but my UO is that I'm not really a big fan of music.  I mean, I like it and all, but I'm not going to go buy an album or anything.  I generally don't know who sings what songs and I do not own any device to play music on.  The only time I listen to music is on the radio in the car.  My husband is a musician and is very, very passionate about music.  We make it work somehow :)

On the subject of elective c-sections:  I think there are legitimate, non-medical reasons for them.  For example, anxiety and/or previous sexual trauma.  Even barring those reasons, it really shouldn't matter what another woman chooses to do as long as her doctor is also on board and as long as she is presented with as much information as possible to make an informed decision.

  • Here is an UO:

I do not trust people who drive a Prius. I am only half-joking.

Don't tell me in one breath you respect and care for the environment and then in the next breath told me you willingly purchased  car with a battery that is supremely toxic to the environment. So much so that you need special training to even be able to deal with repairs near it, change it, etc. The place where those batteries are mined are so toxic that $#!t doesn't even grow near it for a huge radius. And when the thing goes bad, it needs VERY SPECIAL disposal. Obviously all car batteries are bad but a Prius battery is like the worst of the worst for the Earth.

I drive a Prius - but not because I want to save the earth. I like saving money on gas.
@KrystaJ this is a much more acceptable answer to me!!!! I am all for hybrids because I am a cheapskate. I guess I should clarify I don't trust when people tell me it's "for the environment."

Finding a way to efficiently store energy is hard!
The mining industry is fraught with all kinds of environmental issues and most mines have this toxic radius problem. This generally doesn't have anything to do with the compound being mined but rather the method of extraction.
Interesting side note I have a friend who just started a mycoremediation business that has some promising applications in the mining industry. There are many types of mushrooms that will remove heavy metals, oil, and other toxic chemicals from the ground.

At least the Prius batteries are recycled unlike most other batteries that are just thrown a land fill....but I guess since its out of sight means it doesn't matter anymore.
@joules235 My husband says that every place he has ever worked has a recycling requirement so everything they change out gets the red carpet treatment. There is no accounting for people who change their batteries at home and then pull a turd move and dump it in the trash but if they're cheap like me they might want the trade-in credit, lol. My dad was just saying the other day how he saves all his regular batteries rather than put them in the trash and yet he can't find any place to take recycle them for him. Side note: if you tried to change a Prius battery yourself you could very well kill yourself because the battery is so spechul.

That mushroom business you were describing is literally fascinating to me. I could read about that kind of stuff for hours.

SS on recycling: my small town has a recycling bin along with the trash bin and they literally forbid pretty much everything. The list of what you can't recycle is literally pages long whereas the list of approved items is maybe ten deep. Ridiculous. I guess it is better than nothing.

  • @MrsCase1‌ that's not as upsetting to me as when I lived in my old apartment and diligently recycled until I found out the city was just taking the recycling and putting it in the garbage. Wtf? So we just "pretend" we recycle so it looks good that we have all these recycling bins around? Fortunately they have since stopped. Our condo board is now doing a huge campaign to get people to break down boxes in the recycling bin so we actually have space for everyone. Such a simple thing but it seems a lot of people are too lazy to do it.

  • Speaking of recycling (better than birth choices, yes?):

Can someone explain to me why they rinse their glass before recycling? My mom insists on washing prior to putting it in the bin but can't give me a good reason. Nowhere I have ever lived has requested this. Seems like an epic waste of water but a lot of people seem to do it.

  • I've just decided I'm throwing this baby up. I'll start a new way to give birth

When I was little, this was the only logical hole for a baby to come out of, lol!

I come from a family of rednecks and white trash who constantly make fun of me for being "a tree-hugging hippy" because I drive a Prius - but I spend $50 a month on gas and commute 2 hours each day. My motives are strictly economic.

I considered a Prius back in the day because they were given 'alternative fuel' plates, which allows you to drive in the HOV lane as a single driver.  So not only do you save on gas, but you save a ton of time in traffic.  The plate requirements changed though, so I went with a different car (still get like 30 mpg city though), but I would've loved to be able to use the HOV lane.
  • @LoHerrim no AC or what? I already forewarned DH that we will be paying an extra mortgage payment to the utility company after I birth a second Summer baby. Sure miss living my parents now; when I had Lincoln they kept it at 68 for me. :/

OKAY I HAVE ANOTHER UO! :D I hope this is not too late.

I hate how concerned and judgey our country is about fat. I think fat bodies are totally cool and are just a part of normal human variety, and science shows that calories in/calories out is bunk, and also EVEN IF someone wants to get fat by eating entire sticks of butter and living on their couch it's still cool because it's their body. I can take my body out and binge drink and get liver cancer, or buy a motorcycle and ride it up a curvy road in the rain, or eat tons of butter and not exercise because I'm naturally thin, and NO ONE is shaming me for purported 'health concerns;' people shame fat people out of hatred, not health.

    YEAH.
My UO: I hate when people say binge drinking = liver cancer. There are many ways to get it. It feeds the idea that Hep C and liver cancer are only by-products of reckless behavior.

I rinse all the recycling because we keep it outside and will attract bugs and animals if I don't.
