Breastfeeding does not always = weight loss!

  • FWIW, I hadn't lost any weight since two weeks postpartum until I cut my calories down a little around two months. Yes, I have lost a few more pounds, but my supply suffered and I am currently trying to get it back- which is hard as a working mom. For some people I think the issue of cutting calories while breast feeding is that sometimes supply drops off before the extra weight. My midwives said I should hang on to at least ten pounds while breast feeding anyways.

Basically..the isodynamic law. As it says in Wikipedia, and as we are currently seeing in the thread, around for a long time and often debated. In my experience, its 100% accurate.

I'm gonna call it, wikipedia doesn't count as a source especially since wikipedia is saying the neutrality of the article is in question
I've already listed a Harvard Health article link on here for a reliable source. Jillian Michaels has a ton of info backing this as well. The Wikipedia link was more for the isodynamic law reference.

I agree with MissPearson. It is science in the sense that a kcal is a measure of a unit of energy and thermodynamics provides that when you use more kcal than you take in, mass will decrease. The incredible variable variable is the burn part. Bodies are very different and matabolic rates are very different. So, while yes, a calorie is a calorie (cake vs quinoa) and calories in < calories out = weight loss, you have to know your calories out number. And that number can change based on things like hormones, activity level, thyroid function, maybe even blood sugars. Plus, the cake could make you hungrier, etc. But, I think this is why breastfeeding doesn't always result in weight loss. It may make some women's metabolic rate slow down (in an attempt to store calories for baby feeding) or it may make a person hungrier than usual or it may not burn as many calories for one person as it does for another. At the end of the day, weight loss can be very frustrating. Sometimes what works for weight loss is too strict to follow in real life. I recommend buying some transitional clothing that you feel good in. Even if it's just one pair of jeans or pants and then wearing nice, fun things that aren't size dependant (scarves, shoes, jewelry). Feeling good is half the battle!
  • It's not that calories don't matter, but the quality of the calories going in can affect the number of calories going out," said study author Dr. David Ludwig, at Boston Children's Hospital." https://abcnews.go.com/Health/calorie-calorie-harvard-study-compares-popular-weight-loss/story?id=16654506#.UXmdHTfNl8F This supports calorie in < calorie out = weight loss. It just says that the quality of the calorie in can affect the calorie out number. So, ideally you want your calorie out number to be as high as possible. So eating better foods may make that number higher, allowing you to eat more.
  • I didn't miss the point. Yes, it's frustrating when people say "Breastfeeding makes you skinny" because it's was more complicated than that. And it makes people feel like crap. BUT, I also wanted to show some support for science. (Yay! Science). It doesn't make it less frustrating and I'm sorry for those who are frustrated.

    Yeah, you did.

A basic calorie is a basic calorie (in a different sense than "a calorie is a calorie is a calorie"), but how the calorie is metabolized/how the energy is utilized from that calorie is different, carbs vs. fats vs. proteins.  It also depends on the person, their life style, body composition, metabolism, etc.  "Eating less" isn't the answer.
Basically what our new friend did is summarize everything that we've been saying to explain that the simplistic "Calories In Calories Out" model is wrong (aka, all calories are different, cake is not the same as chicken, the type of calories you eat affects your metabolism, it's not just "eat less") but say that it all means MissusPearse (sp?) is right.

  • I'm sorry I know it's annoying when people comment without reading every comment but it would take me years. I just wanted to say I feel your pain sister. I can only fit into sweats and its depressing. What they also don't tell you is if you cut your calories too much your supply tanks. The bf mindf-ck gets me every time.
