Re: Who composts?

  • We actually bought a compost bin at home depot, its nice and small.

My parents do it on a larger scale at their home. They made a box from wooden pallets with an open top. So they throw all that crap in there and turn it every so often. My moms gardens are gorgeous because of this stuff!

  • We have the exact same thing @DC2London has and DH made it.  Here is how we did it - https://intendedtemple.blogspot.com/2010/03/how-to-make-your-own-compost-bin.html

I made the mistake of sticking the bun under my kitchen window one year and ended up with gnats all over in the house.  My advice is to put the bin away from your house somewhere!!!

  • We throw all of our scraps into a metal bucket and once or twice a week I'll bring it down to our compost pile. Ours is just a pile of dirt that we throw everything into. The chickens have access too it, so they dig through it and eat what they want and then I'll mix it up every once in a while.
We don't compost any meat products because we don't want too lure in any animals, don't want the chickens to get too it and using rotten meat in our garden is kind of gross too me.
We don't do any paper products either only because without being contained they dry out and blow away.
My mom has always warned me not to put hot peppers in the compost because the spiciness will get into your plants. I don't know how true that is because this will be our first year with a garden, but I've been throwing them in over the last couple of years anyways so hopefully she's wrong about that.

  • I was just talking to my neighbor about this no less than 15 minutes ago. We have a compost pile in our yard in the back corner, but I'm kind of afraid to use it for compost because of all the bugs - especially the flies and gnats. The kids' swingset is only about 3 yards away from it. Would you anticipate that being a problem?

Right now we're just putting in grass clippings, fireplace ashes, etc - things that won't stink or draw bugs. But obviously that's not the point of a compost pile. Help me overcome my fear of the stink and bugs :(

  • You have to maintain your C:N ratio, so you have to put high nutrient kitchen wastes in if you want to break down grass and leaves.  Can't do too many leaves b/c they are slow to go.
