  I read this last week, I'm on the fence.  On the one hand what she did was completely crazy, but on the other, she was trying to find work to support herself and her kids. 

  
  

  Canceling an interview because you're sick is one thing, but to cancel because you can't find child care sends a signal that you might be an employee that has issues with attendance; and companies are getting so many resume's in what do they care if can't make an interview, they have a drawer full of others.  I wish she could have figured something else out.

  I agree w/this completely. I am glad those kids are ok, though.

  This woman was in a damned if you do, damned if you don't situation, and I feel like she was trying to do what was best for her family's future.  If she hadn't gone to the interview because she couldn't find someone to care for her kids, it wouldn't have made the news, but she'd be considered a leech on the welfare system. Someone would be on the news saying about people "like her" that they needed to get out and get jobs.

  
  

  Poor parents in this country have to make this kind of decision every day, despite how some use politics to try to paint them as lazy and no good. When they do get jobs, they still have to make these incredibly tough decisions. Many parts of this country do not have safe and secure childcare options for parents who make minimum wage or who work odd hours. And you can't buy diapers with food stamps. And so on and so on.
  

  
  

  Those of us who can find care fairly easily, even last minute, who have stable jobs (or don't because we choose not to work), etc.,  and have never been in this situation should count our lucky stars.

  I agree. This is a tough one. I wish the family would have been there to watch the kids for the interview.

  On my FB this turned into a race debate, it makes me mad that people turned this into "well she's being punished because she's black" and "she's getting off because she's white" talking about the mom who had the 3 year old boy crawl into the machine.

  I'm on the fence wrt how the legal system should handle a case like this. A mother with the best of intensions forced into a corner and virtually forced to do something reckless for the ultimate good of her family. It's a tough situation. I feel for the mother and I wouldn't want to see her in jail for 8 years, but at the same time, what she did was wrong. Understandable, but wrong. Thank god the kids were okay, but they easily could have been harmed.

  I agree with seeing both sides and being on the fence. However, I think many people would feel differently had something bad happened to one of the kids.
