Newborn Hearing Test - Worried New Mom

My daughter was born this past Monday night...vaginal delivery, but came into the world very quickly. The hospital tested her hearing 7 hours after she was born and she didn't pass (referred). They then tested her again 24 hours later and she didn't pass. Then, the hospital sent us home and asked that we come back next Thursday again for the test in case she has fluid in her ears. I've been trying to enjoy the time with our daughter, but it's hard with this test looming.

We were sent home not even 48 hours after her birth and we've noticed that she reacts to sounds...On Thursday morning I was doing dishes and she definitely startled. She startled at cars driving by. I clapped behind her and she startled. She calms to the sound of my voice...

I know there are varying degrees of hearing loss, but I'm just wanting to hear some other people's experiences...I'm driving myself crazy thinking about it.

Re: Newborn Hearing Test - Worried New Mom

  • It's common for them to fail. Sometimes it takes som Lo's time to clear fluid out of ears.
    It will be OK :)

  • Apparently our son failed his hearing test as well ("referred") but nobody bothered to tell us.  The first we found out was when the Audiology clinic called us to schedule an appointment!  Talk about freaking out.

Okay, so after a lot of frustration and tears we found out that "a lot" of newborns fail their hearing tests -- so many that they don't even call it "failing" anymore, it is either "pass" or "refer."  So we'll take him back in a few weeks for a re-test.  From what I gather, the tests are somewhat more reliable when they are a few weeks older just because it's easier to fit the equipment to their ears, etc.

We have also spent the last several days watching him for signs that he's hearing noises and reacting to them.  Honestly, with a newborn it's kind of hard to tell.  Sometimes it looks like he is reacting, and sometimes it looks like he isn't.   It's hard not to worry, but we figure he's healthy is every other way, so we should try really hard not to worry until we know we have something to worry about.

Yes, it would have been AWESOME if someone had told us all of this information about "pass" vs. "refer" before we left the hospital so I didn't have to FREAK OUT when Audiology called.   But they admitted that we fell through the cracks and apologized.

  • As PPs has said, it's really common not to pass. Chances are very high that there is just fluid in the ears. Try your best not to worry!

  • Ditto pp. It's super common. My LO was referred and when we went back later he passed in the first 10 minutes. No need to worry!
I hope to create a real siggy but first I need some sleep!

    Mom to Lily and Colin!
  • Thanks everyone. I just wish they would give a bit more info. before sending mom and baby home. Hopefully there's nothing to worry about!
  • Agree with everyone above - my son failed the first 2 tests and I started to panic.  They took him overnight for a third and when they came back with him, I was so out of it and exhausted, I swore they said he had failed again.  The next morning, when the nurses were giving report to the next shift, they said he had passed and I started sobbing out of relief.  Stupid hearing tests can really give a FTM a scare!
  • Same happened to me, until one day when he was about 2 months a piece of wax came out.

  • ***UPDATE

Molly passed her hearing test this morning. :) She passed with 100% in both ears. The screener was surprised because she was 0% in both ears when we left the hospital last week. She must've had quite a bit of build up in her ears. They were prepared to give us a name of an audiologist, but thankfully all is well.

Thanks again for your responses. My first experience as a worried mom...  (I'm sure there will be plenty to follow).
