Burning sensation...

Hi Ladies,
For the last few weeks (I'm almost 28 wks, FTM) I've had a really bad burning sensation on my skin just below my breasts. It's all the way across my stomach on the stomach area about an inch below my breasts. I've done some research and it seems to not be too uncommon. People are saying it's from muscles stretching and nerves being pushed on. I haven't found anything to remedy the issue though. I was just curious if any of you have noticed this symptom and if you found a remedy. It's very painful and I'm finding that lotions/oils aren't helping whatsoever. It feels like a really bad sunburn.

Re: Burning sensation...

  • I would have to agree with some of the people that you have spoken with as well. This happened to me my first pregnancy, not as severe, but I found that wire bras made it worst, so I switched to softer, no wire bras and it helped. As well as no tight fitting clothing around that area like cami tank tips with support (which I love BTW). I carried my daughter high and well as this LO too (I have a short torso), so I am having to deal with it again :-(..... Just remeber, your fundus can reach your rib cage, pushing and tugging on your skin. And your breasts probalby aren't helping either. Becoming larger and heavier, straining that area. I'm sorry you have to go through it, but your not alone here.

  • Thanks! Ya, anything touching that area hurts. The softest touch hurts, so really the only time it doesn't hurt is when I lie in bed and go topless :(. It definitely feels like nerves because it's also a bit numb and tingly besides burning.
  • Could it be shingles??
  • There's no rash or bumps or anything like that. Not even redness. And it's not really itchy either so I do think its just nerves. I cut my finger really bad about 5 years ago and this is what it felt like when the nerves started healing again. I have my OB appt next Tues so I'll see if my Dr has anything to say. Just sucks not having anything I can do to relieve the pain.
  • I have the same problem. I have found that putting on a thick cream all over really helps.

  • I've been having this feeling for a couple of weeks now (started after my last doctors appointment).  The thing that I've found helps the most is to rest an ice pack on the spot for a little while.
  • So I think I can help here. I had this only from my mid abdomen through left side. My doctor explained it as my ribs flaring. I didn't believe her so she sent me for every test on earth including an ultrasound on my upper abdomen. The results..... Rib flaring, the solution.... Birth. I wish I had better news but this pain has woken me up many of nights in tears. To be honest I'm 35 weeks now and it will get worse and then better for you. Once the baby "drops" you'll feel some relief for me it was the 33.5-34 week mark. Tylenol, heating pad on low for 15 minutes and ice packs will help.
  • I had the same, I just kept putting lotion on. It went away eventually but I felt burny for a few weeks :(
  • I have the exact same thing. My doctor said it's your ribs separating and that's tearing the muscles right there. I've had this for like two months. Went away for a week or two, but now it's back. There's nothing really you can do. She said to sit up as straight as possible, and bend at the knees when you're picking things up. Hunching over pushes your belly up into that space and separates the muscles even further. Lotions not going to do anything because it's not your skin that's the problem, it's the muscles underneath.

I found that applying pressure really really helps. Must hold everything together? I wrap the area (like an inch under my boobs) with a stretchy ace bandage. That seems to work the best.

Good luck! It's the most obnoxious pain!

  • I have that too, particularly on the right side where the baby is constantly pushing her little bum out. Feels almost like that area has just been slapped. My OB said that it's the skin stretching faster than the nerves can keep up with. The burning/tingling sensation is the nerves kind of in shock and readjusting.

I've found Palmer's oil helps soothe it but the effect is only temporary. I haven't tried a cold compress yet but am planning to.

  • I've had this really bad for about 3 months now. Unfortunately there is no remedy but having the kid. Like a PP said try not to slouch at all. Not letting skin/innards touch each other helps. Counter pressure is also one of the few things that gives relief. It sucks to even touch the skin when its that tender but pushing on the area a little bit really does help. I've also found that on the days where it burns more than hurts a soft cold cloth wiped across the area gives some numbing relief.

  • I've felt this exact thing since about 18 weeks along. Sometimes it's worse than other times, but for me either it's gotten better recently or I have just gotten used to it. And when it's not burning, it's numb. My doctor said it's normal and nothing serious to worry about. Baby girl is still doing well.

  • I had something like this a couple of weeks ago.  It was on my right side under my breast.  The doctor thought it was gallstones since it's pretty common for the gallbladder to act up during pregnancy, they ran some labs and did an ultrasound and the u/s showed that it was actually DD's head stretching me and causing the pain.  Once she flipped I didn't have the pain any more.  I'd talk to your doc about it and make sure it's not gallstones and see if maybe it's a body part pushing/stretching you causing the pain.  I totally didn't think the pain I was having could be cause by a body part, but sure enough it was.  I was glad because didn't want to have to deal with gallbladder issues the rest of my pregnancy.

  • I seriously thought this was going to be about a burning feeling when you pee. I'm glad to see it's not.

Congrats to my GP Sister from another mister Bruinsbabe!!

  • I've had this since about 20 something weeks when baby started getting bigger. Sitting at my desk job aggravates it the most. Also laying on my left side, so I'm a right side sleeper now. Sorry you're suffering too but definitely not uncommon. For me, heat really seemed to help my ribs. I have a long microwaveable heat roll that I can put right under my boobs where it hurts and it's not all on my belly making baby hot. OB said others may find relieve with ice or Bengay.
