In terms of nutrition? Yes they are different. In terms of weight loss, no.
Wow.
Well then I'm not sure you know as much about nutrition and health as you think you do.
Right back 'atcha. Like I said-different schools of thought. I'm confident with my take on it, and it sounds like you're confident with yours. So clearly we aren't going to change the others opinion. That being said, exiting the thread so it can get back on track
There aren't two different schools of thought. This isn't religion. This is about science, studies, and research. A calorie ISN'T a calorie ISN'T a calorie.
Nursing mothers need nutrition and calories and don't need to "eat less." Some women burn calories like mad while nursing, others hold onto the weight. It isn't about calories in vs. calories out. Sure, we could drastically cut calorie input and burn hundreds of calories a day working out, and lose weight, but what would that do to your milk supply?
It is pretty rude to tell someone just to "eat less," especially when you don't know their situation, lifestyle, and eating habits. Eating less isn't the end-all-be-all solution.
Wow, I just came back to find that this thread really derailed. Anyone who thinks 500 calories of cake = 500 calories of chicken and salad needs to go back to highschool health class. Or read the South Beach diet book. It explains it soooo much better than I could but it's definitely more than just "math."
But GUYZ I was hoping I could stop with the real food and just eat cake around the clock. Because calories are calories. And CAKE!!!!!!
OP, I am sorry you're dealing with assholes who think it's okay to make those kinds of comments.
True story... When I was growing up, I was tiny. The doctors told my mom to let me eat whatever I wanted because I was so picky and needed extra weight b/c I was sick all the time. My mother actually let me eat chocolate cake for breakfast! Like a lot. I still didn't gain weight. Turns out I was severely hyperthyroid and my metabolism was insanely fast. Once they fixed that I slowly started gaining weight and quit getting sick. But damn, I wish I could still get away with that!
Chocolate for breakfast is all I read.... Mmmmmmmmmm the kind from Magginos- thanks for the craving, all I have is oatmeal cookies!
The idea that I would lose weight easily with breast feeding (EPing for me) was packaged in with the rest of the fantasy world I was living in prior to giving birth, along with the idea of hanging out at the mall and breast feeding in the Nordstrom lounge, lunching with the LO, being able to breastfeed without a problem, etc.
Basically..the isodynamic law. As it says in Wikipedia, and as we are currently seeing in the thread, around for a long time and often debated. In my experience, its 100% accurate.
@slwprincessregarding South Beach-I would hardly consider a fad diet a reliable source. They come and go.

I'm gonna call it, wikipedia doesn't count as a source especially since wikipedia is saying the neutrality of the article is in question

I've already listed a Harvard Health article link on here for a reliable source. Jillian Michaels has a ton of info backing this as well. The Wikipedia link was more for the isodynamic law reference.

I just read the Wikipedia article and it looks like it's debunking the "Calorie is a Calorie" a lot more than it is supporting it.
" they fed two groups of monkeys the same number of calories and dietary
levels of fat, with the only difference being that one group was fed
foods higher in trans fat. The high trans fat group gained 30% more belly fat compared to their lower trans fat counterparts.[11] The researchers concluded that the type of calories consumed do have an impact on body weight.[5]"
"The researchers concluded that the type of calories consumed does affect
the number of calories burned by an individual. This conclusion is in
direct contrast to what the commonly held belief implies."
So.... you just linked us to a bunch of resources that say you're wrong...
Ummm south beach is hardly a fad diet. It's actually just about eating healthy carbs and more protein which we should all do anyway. Hell, I only read it b/c my OB suggested it as an easy way to manage GD. And she was right... It became much clearer which choices to make after reading that book. And overall, once you get passed the strict phase (which I never did anyway but DH has) it's really just a balanced healthy diet. Eating good carbs instead of bad carbs. But again, read the book- you'll learn a lot about general health and how/why we gain weight.

@greenbunny79 if you google BMR calculations it will explain more. BMR is basal metabolic rate which is how many calories you burn just day to day living. You than take into account activity level and calories burned from that, etc. and you get an idea of how many calories you can consume to lose, gain or maintain weight. A few will take BFing into the equation as well.
Letting this thread die on my end. Hope everyone is having a good Wednesday
This thread was not about seeking advice on how to lose weight or your opinion. . It is about how people say you will lose so much weight breastfeeding and its not true for everyone.
@MissusPearson... we DONT want any of your views on weight loss. Your not a dr and you're wrong... bow out now, you said you would, quit talking.. like a PP stated it isn't just calorie in, calorie out.. many other factors come in to play including the type of food you eat
I stopped pumping (because of my meds),and I've gained 8 pounds in 3 weeks, and my doc said this was nomal! I think everyone's body is different, and it is beyond frustrating that doctors and the general public like to lump everyone together.
OP I feel ya. But I understand what pp is saying but it just isn't true. If I follow WW(low fat high carb) I gain. I have high blood sugar. If I low carb(Atkins paleo etc) I lose rapidly. Same calorie intake. Too bad BF makes me want ALL THE CAKE
@MissusPearson A lot of people, including OP, expended time and energy supporting you when you were concerned the other day about going dairy-free. It would've been nice to see you extend the same courtesy here. Someone having a shitty day doesn't need pseudoscience or a "devil's advocate"; "Sorry you're struggling" would suffice.
OP I do feel bad you're struggling and I understand how frustrating it is-like I stated I'm not claiming to be perfect or to have it all figured out. I appreciated OPs and everyone else's response on my dairy free post and all others. I don't need to be told what will suffice though, and don't appreciate feeling censored.
I'm sorry to those who are struggling to lose weight.
If you DO want to discuss what works for some and what doesn't, we can do a thread like that. But you're all right--BFing doesn't guarantee weight loss and for some women it can make you hold onto some weight, only to dramatically drop it when you wean.
Wow @MissusPearson you took a thread that never had any intention of asking for any weight loss advice and hijacked the darn thing. OP needed some support and to come in here and insult everyone's intelligence with your Wikipedia article (I mean what the actual fuck? anyone who has done any amount of research knows Wikipedia doesn't ever count as a source.) and talk about how easy it is to lose weight is just pompous asshattery.
The thread was quiet last night. I only came back in because I was tagged. I'm fine with letting it die-not the one that reopened it. It reminds me of the ceiling fan post...and around and around and around. So can't we just all agree to quit referencing the same argument?
Basically..the isodynamic law. As it says in Wikipedia, and as we are currently seeing in the thread, around for a long time and often debated. In my experience, its 100% accurate.
@slwprincessregarding South Beach-I would hardly consider a fad diet a reliable source. They come and go.
I have a bunch of comments to catch up on, but FFS, are you SERIOUSLY QUOTING WIKIPEDIA???? FAIL. FAIL. FAIL.
It's hilarious to me--hilarious!!--that in the next paragraph, you talk about reliable resources.
1) Did you READ the Wikipedia article? As I mentioned previously, it cites three studies that negate what you're saying.
2) The quickie Harvard Health calculator that is intended to help you lose weight does not equal a scientific study that breaks down the complexities of how different calories work in different ways.
3) You yourself mentioned BMR. That changes based on factors beyond your age, sex, and weight. It changes when you consume different types of calories over long periods of time. An online BMR calculator is not a "source" to support your notion that all calories are the same, because different kinds of calories (refined sugars vs. whole grains) can actually change your BMR over time.
So, until you can provide us with an actual scientific study that IS NOT from 1878 (like your "isodynamic law"), you are wrong.
Let it be known that it is not only me that keeps this thread off track. I'm not talking to myself here-still getting plenty of responses
People are telling you that you were hurtful and wrong and unkind to jump in with your "eat less" bullshit in this thread. You don't seem to get how wrong and hurtful that was. People keep responding because you don't grasp how bitchy it is to keep saying " just eat less" to someone who has expressed dismay at weight struggles without asking for help.
And people are also responding to your argument itself, which is flawed and incorrect. There are two different arguments here, do you grasp that? The first is that it was a shitty thing to say. The second that it was a completely incorrect thing to say.
People are going to keep expressing how shitty it was of you to jump in here and say that.
Cheese and rice!!!! No one wants to let the thread itself die, most of us were offering commiseration and sympathy. We would like the unsolicited advice to die. Thanks.

Well great, now I'm craving Uncle Ben's. Who knows what that will do to the circumference of my ass. :x :x :x
Stuck in the quote box, but nom! I want broccoli, cheese, and rice right now at 9:59 in the morning. But BFing makes me eat like a beast!!

tangent
studies have shown that wikipedia often has more up to date info than medical textbooks because its always being updates whereas textbooks are quickly outdated
end tangent
The sources Wikipedia cites have some validity; however, Wikipedia can be edited by all sorts of people. My student worker's dad is a teacher and purposely edits a page with false information he knows his students would come across to see if they use it as a source. That's the flaw in Wikipedia. It isn't to say that there isn't credible information there, it's that it is unreliable in how much and what information IS correct.
When the new pope was elected, I was looking at Wikipedia to find out more about him; the information/"facts" on that page changed multiple times throughout the day.
Working in a library, I tell students with reference questions that Wikipedia itself is NOT a good source for papers; however, if they look at the information cited at the bottom of pages, they could be led to information they can use. It's not a bad place to start, but should not be used as a sole source of information or quoted.

It is seriously ridiculous to argue with a mass opinion on this thread. I'm cool with rocking the boat though
