Pregnancy Symptoms and Negative Test??

This may be a long post, but I wanted some other opinions and experiences.  And I'm sure there are a million "Could I be pregnant?!" posts, but I haven't been able to find anyone with a situation similar to mine.

In January I had my Paragard IUD removed due to a possible metal allergy and was put on Viorelle/Kariva Oral Contraceptive. For the first two and a half months I had zero side effects from the Pill. March 3-7 I had my "period" or withdraw bleed, whichever you'd prefer. On March 20thish I had a few days of dark-colored light spotting. I figured I was breakthrough bleeding, but had no period/withdraw bleed the next week (March 30-April 1st) when I took my in active pills. I take my pills religiously, every day, same time.

So for the past 3 weeks I have been experiencing some pregnancy symptoms. It started with tender breasts, in the past few days I've noticed more prominent Montgomery glands and some tingling in my nipples; I have to wear a sports bra at night because it is too uncomfortable to sleep any other way. Tiredness. Cramping. A few headaches. Urinating a little more often. Some nausea with burping. I have been pregnant once before, but unfortunately did not carry past 7 weeks (would be about 6/7 weeks now). Some of these symptoms are different than before. Previously, my nipples were much more prominent, dark and sensitive, I had even more urinary frequency and I had no nausea. I have taken HPTs on April 1st, April 14th and today (April 16th) and they have all been negative.

I know the best thing I can do is wait and either test again, see if I get my period and/or talk to my doctor. But I'd like to hear if anyone else has had a similar experience and what happened?

Re: Pregnancy Symptoms and Negative Test??

  • There is no real way to know without testing again but a general rule is that if you have enough hormones to have symptoms you would also have enough hormones to get a positive pregnancy test. Especially at 6-7 weeks pregnant.

Also when I got on the pill my breasts hurt horribly and I was very moody (both pregnancy symptoms). I also had cramping which turned out to be a cyst caused by the pill so I got off it. Birth control pills mess with your hormones which can make all sorts of things happen.

This.  Your body is probably adjusting to the different hormonal effects of BCP vs an IUD.  You are almost definitely not pregnant.  Test again in a week or two if you're curious.

  • Negative test = not pregnant at this time.

  • If you have a negative test that means you are not pregnant at this time.

  • I had a similar experience, where I thought I might be pregnant but got a negative test.

    I wasn't pregnant.

  • BC pills mess with me a lot too. I would always get sore/swollen breasts, nausea, and other symptoms. The only way to know is to test, which you have, and the tests were negative. Negative tests mean not pregnant at thjs time. If you do not get withdraw bleeding after your active pills, then test again.

I'm not sure if/when you should call a doctor if your period doesn't come. I know it's usually 60 days with no period or positive HPT, but it may be different when you're on the pill. It's possible that this type of BC isn't the best for you, I know I tried several different ones before finding one I like.

  • Negative test means not pregnant

    It's a BOY

  • Going on/off the pill will give you pregnancy-like symptoms because its messing with your hormones, which is what pregnancy does.

If your test is negative then you're not pregnant. You're not a special snowflake who has fooled the manufacturer.

Enjoy your BC - happy fucking! :)
