Silly FTM Question

So I have left the house with LO before with no problem. He is about 5 weeks and we go for 1 hours walks in the stroller. However I need to get some things at Target and if I don't take him it will never happen. And what I need to get requires a cart.

My silly question is, how do I make this happen? I have a baby bjorn. Do I wear him and push the cart? I have a Graco snap carrier- does it fit in the front of the cart? That last one I am guessing is a terrible idea. I don't think they have carts with baby holders- but it is not something I've paid much attention to before.

Re: Silly FTM Question

  • Why not take him in the car seat then put the car seat on the shopping cart? This is what I do. I don't like the carriers b/c I bend over to get stuff off the shelves and he might fall out.  *-:)

  • When I have to go grocery shopping, I put my baby in a wrap and I push the cart. My hands are both free this way and this way I'm not worried to walk a few feet away from my cart to get something.

It depends on the baby I guess but mine loves our wrap so it's easy to use when I go shopping.
  • My carrier is my car seat- it detaches. So does that actually work? I was afraid it wouldn't fit or it would fall. I can just see myself coming in to try and it not working so I have to walk back out like an idiot.

ETA: Sorry guys...did not realize that this was as unsafe as it is. :( I'm still learning too, so I appreciate the replies to my comment!

  • I put her seat in the large basket of the cart. It kind of puts a limit on how many groceries I can pick up, which comes in handy later when I'm too exhausted to carry the groceries into the house! ;)

no no no! I hope you do NOT mean on the basket part! (There is even a picture on the cart saying to not do this!) https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=zmkbcfBDbpE

  • We just take her car seat into the store and put it in the cart. They don't have carts specially designed for car seats, but our seat fits snugly in the child seat...and it's not like we are going over any rough terrain in the store, so I'm not concerned with her seat falling out. :)

fine if you want to do this and risk your own child's life, but don't go around suggesting it to other people! (Like I said above, there is even a warning on the shopping cart saying to not do this!) https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=zmkbcfBDbpE

Please do NOT do this. Car seats are not meant to clip on to shopping carts--it even says so in the manual. There have been instances where infants have died from a car seat falling off of a shopping cart.

ETA: OP, I would wear him and push the cart.

Yeah, all it would take is someone bumping into your cart.

  • Sorry all--I didn't realize it was that unsafe :( Sorry for the bad advice

  • I usually wear him, but have also taken the bucket seat inside and put him in the large part of the cart.

  • I would either wear or use two carts if needed. But definitely not on top of the cart.

I put the baby in the cart (not in top, but in the big part) and just put my stuff around her car seat. Or I go with someone who can push either the cart or stroller.

ETA to clarify I don't put just the baby in the cart, she stays in her infant carrier and I put that in the cart (big part, not on top)

  • If I just need one or two little things I just take the stroller and put whatever I get in the little storage bin underneath. Still trying to get proficient enough at baby wearing to just wear her!

  • I use the stroller and push one ( cart or stroller) and pull the other. Yes it's a pain BUT it's safe and I can get all I need.

    This.

  • I've always just used my wrap and pushed the cart.  I feel safest with baby wearing. Another perk is  that way people don't think they can come up and touch her.

Yes. I do. I have done this with all 4 of my boys, and nothing has ever gone wrong. I have also seen this done by many other moms who are at the store, so I'm not the only mom who has or who will have ever done this. I also plan on doing this later. Gotta get groceries.
  • I just put her carseat in the front part where the older kids sit, but I turn it sideways and put it IN the cart, not balanced on top of it. Perfectly safe and leaves the big part open to put stuff in.

  • I unfortunately see moms at the grocery story with their car seats up front all the time and it takes everything I have not to tell them how unsafe they're being. All it takes is one nudge or hit the wrong way and that car seat will flip.

  • I truly didn't realize this was a thing. I've honestly always taken the stroller or wrapped her, but I've seen so many people do it that I didn't know it was a no-no.

My H didnt either until i told him!
But we normally so the same, stroller or wrap

  • I did it before I knew better. My twin sister ripped my ass in target and then I saw a thread on here as well about it.
Now I wear her or I put her car seat carrier in the large part of the cart. If DH is with sometimes they just drive around the parking lot.. or I take the stroller in too
  • It seriously makes me cringe when I see people put the baby on top of the carriage. When I worked at a grocery store I saw a cart flip with a carseat on top a couple of times. It was terrifying for everyone, thankfully the babies were okay.

It makes the cart incredibly top heavy and unstable- like PPs have said, all it takes is a little kid running by to tap it the wrong way. Even if you're the most careful parent on earth, you never know what could happen. Why risk it just for your convenience?

  • @CHalePhoto‌ I always put my Moby on at home! So much easier and then I'm ready to go when we get to the store.

  • I just got back from the store and put $90 worth of groceries and the diaper bag in the small part of the cart, surrounding the car seat (the remainder of the big part,) and underneath the cart. It's really not that hard, so...why not?

Has this always been a no-no cause I've done it always. My kids are 18, 15 and 7 and are still alive. Everyone else does it too.

this is the same logic people used to say about not using seat belts in cars. Hmm....yeah...

  • I used my wrap today at the store and loved it. So much easier to deal with baby when he starts fussing.
When I bring the car seat in, I put it in the big part of the cart. Then I grab 2 hand baskets and put them under the cart. Groceries go in there and around baby but it still limits how much I can get (a problem when I have 7 people to feed at home).

    Well. Lmao. All I was trying to say was if you're gonna be dumb, you gotta be tough. I hate this tablet. 8-}

I get that putting the car seat on top of the cart could potentially be dangerous, but even when you're carrying your baby you could trip or some little kid could bump into you. But, the media would never blow something like that up, because accidents happen.

I am unsure what we will do when we grocery shop. Right now we haven't taken the baby and when we took her to a retail store we put the car seat on top, because I didn't know then that it was deemed unsafe. But, someone was with her the whole time.

People gotta do what works best for them and I don't feel guilty for the decisions I'm making. I'm doing my best to care for baby and keep my sanity.

But now that the reasons for not doing it have been discussed, wouldn't the "best way to care for baby" be to put them in the big part of the cart?

Or wear LO or use a stroller....these are not impossible choices.
