1st Birthday

My mom called today and told me that we need to start planning LO's 1st birthday party next weekend after she is done with my little brother's party. My mom loves to party plan and is good at it, but she likes to have a lot of time. So it got me to thinking...who has/is planning for that 1st Birthday already?

  • Nothing big here either. We'll do smash cake pictures for sure. Family and a few friends only, probably grill out or something.

I am still debating on themes. I have looked at golf and superheroes so far!

  • I have a theme picked out and made a private event on FB (but I haven't invited anyone yet).
  • I have some ideas, but it looks like I will be planning with my mom soon.  The party will be 3 hours away where all my family is so I'm going to need her to assist with plans.   We go semi elaborate for parties but not expensive.

DS1 and LO have birthdays 4 days apart so I have to plan ahead so that I can have both parties ready in time without being stressed.  Of course DS1 has is party where we live because he has friends from school that will come.

I know the place for LO's (library meeting room because it is nice, clean, has a kitchen and is free for 2 hours) and the weekend (because of DH"s work schedule)/

Honestly, for DS's first birthday, we probably will just grill out and have family over to visit, cake, etc. I'll get pictures taken, but I'm not thinking a big birthday party is really necessary at this point.
This is kind of what I am thinking as well. I don't personally like having an enormous party for the 1st birthday where you invite everyone you know. I think we're just going to do something small with immediate family only.
Our family is huge (both parents divorce and remarried and there are lots of babies) so by the time grandparents, aunts/uncles, and cousins are invited it is huge. Ours is close family and a few close friends.

DS1's birthday parties are always large as well, but he is happy with a party in the local park so they can run around.  I'm hoping since he will be 12 this year he will choose a smaller party with a few friends doing something simple like Laser Tag, etc.

Well, in the beginning I was thinking we'd do something small, but I'm going to have a theme, and decorations, good food and a cake (at our house). However big it turns out is fine with me.

eta: for the in laws, we'll probably just have a cake at the pumpkin farm.

  • Monster theme for us! I'm doing a mashed potato bar (Monster Mash) and some stuff on the grill. My mom and I are making little stuffed monsters as favors. (All different and about the size of your hand) Haven't decided if I'm going to make both cakes or order one. (Smash cake and adult cake) I don't want LO to have much,if any, food coloring on his cake or crazy amounts of sugar so I'm deft making that one. It won't be huge seeing as our family lives across the country but I'm guessing about 20 people. Mom friends with their babies and husbands etc.

  • DS will be 7 months old next week! Also May is a super crazy busy month for us and we have every weekend booked. Also June and July get busy for us so I don't want to wait until a month before the party to plan. I have already been pinning things and am starting to work on actual plans now. I also want to spread out expenses and buy things on sale if I can.

  • We call LO The Tilly Monster so we are going to do something monster themed. The bakery in our town makes a tiny smash cake that looks like a monster... We saw it in the display case when we ordered her baptism cake. We know we are getting that. And that is as far as I got!

  • I voted SS.
With my first I had it all planned out by the time he was 6 months old. This time around I haven't even had the time to think about it yet.

  • @ellaf We are doing a Monster theme as well! It is so adorable, and it is different from what everyone I know always does (Sesame Street, Mickey Mouse, etc).

@mancila60 I like to shop ahead to save money as well.  I'm the person who hits up the day after Christmas sales so that I can stock up on birthday gifts for the year.  I buy things for DS1 and now LO all throughout the year on sale for their birthday and Christmas.

  • We are starting to plan (my sister and I) and have a theme. A pinterest board has been started.

My nephewd birthday is the day before so some early planning has to happen. Plus I want to diy as much as possible.

  • I've started to pin some themes & get some ideas in my head. Friends of ours have a son who is 5 mos older than Joey, and his 1st bday party is the first wkend in May, and honestly I'm going to see what they do and then go from there. I do know that I want it to be pretty big, but seeing as how we live in MI & October can either be 80 or 20, it's hard to really plan for it to be outside, so we are going to have rent a hall or something. I'm super excited for it though!

  • i have a theme already, but only because I wanted to do Mickey Mouse clubhouse for DD1 at some point but now she's too old for that and we never did it. (we've done Sesame, Dora and Fresh Beat Band for DD1). So, DD2 will have MMCH, but I won't actually plan it until the summer. This is way to early to start!!

  • I haven't even thought of planning yet but we go semi big so I will start in August. I have a whole bunch of mommy friends that I met when I had DS and they all have number 2's a little older then DD(and they all had boys the first and girls second, so Tessa has a bunch of little friends!). It's been crazy at all the other 2.0's parties and hers won't be any different! If anyone is looking for a theme, I did Uno for DS's first and it was really cute.

I am going to save my birthday party planning energy/ideas for when LO will actually care/remember it.

They may not remember it but they will have lots of pictures to look at. Plus I've heard that the first birthday is for the parents and surviving the first year. The rest of the birthdays are for them! ;)

  • All our parties are pretty much the same.
Cookout (burgers, hot dogs, salads), cake and ice cream, and open presents.

We invite our family and closest friends.  Real easy and not much planning.

  • We are doing a big, huge party. We're having the party at my parents house because they have a big separate garage with a full bathroom and kitchen. At this point, the theme is dinosaurs (also the theme in DS's nursery) but we'll see if that changes or not. We're doing a big party for his first because it's the only one that we'll do in our hometown and invite the whole family plus our friends back home. I'm hoping for a gorgeous fall day!

  • I've pinned a few things, and decided on the theme (as long as I don't change my mind). We are trying to decide whether we will be in Calgary, or California for her first birthday so most of the planning wont happen until that is decided.

  • I think dd's theme is going to be Olivia's Onederland with Olivia the pig red, black and white decorations.

  • all I know is it will be a costume party.  I still need to get through dd1's 3rd bday before i worry about dd2's. lol
  • @tashad18‌ we have already been buying stuff for DS's birthday. Just a small present and a birthday book. But they were on sale!
  • I've pinned some things (secretly, of course), and made sure my mom was okay with us using their house. That's as far as I've gotten though.

  • First birthdays are a huge thing here is Hawaii. We have the date picked, we need to start looking at venues.
  • I have no clue what we're going to do! Its just us here so we may go visit family or just have us and the cake at home.
  • So DD1 and 2 had big 1st parties we will continue the tradition. However parties after that get super small and are just small get togethers with dinner, cupcakes and the family. No theme yet.

  • I have also started secretly pinning but don't have anything set in stone for theme yet. It will be at our house, family, friends, too much food, the usual.
